Welcome to the Wetlands and Migratory Waterbirds web site
The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage promotes the conservation, repair and wise use of wetlands across Australia. It does this in collaboration with all levels of government, industry and community members. It is also responsible for implementing international conventions and agreements on wetlands and migratory waterbirds. The wetlands and migratory waterbirds web site provides information about Australia's obligations under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971), the Convention on Migratory Species (Bonn Convention) and international treaties such as the Japan-Australia and China-Australia Migratory Bird Agreements (JAMBA and CAMBA). This web site also provides information and guidance about the importance of the Commonwealth's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to the protection of wetlands and migratory waterbirds.

Main Clean Water Main ... News America's wetlands provide something for everyone. Wetlands protect us all in many ways they filter pollutants from our drinking water, protect our homes by storing floodwater, and provide homes for fish, shellfish, and wildlife. Wetlands are crucial for clean water, serving as a natural filter absorbing water-borne pollutants and damaging contaminants before the water enters our rivers, lakes, and streams. Despite the fact that wetlands are of unique value to our society, a 1997 survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that roughly 58,500 acres of wetlands are being destroyed annually. Sierra Club is fighting for the restoration and protection of wetlands all across America, for our families and for our future.

    Wetlands are transitional lands between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is often covered by shallow water during some parts of the year. Wetlands can be categorized according to specific habitat and type of vegetation. In general, wetlands are divided into:
      Saltwater and brackish water marshes, which are usually located in coastal areas;
      Freshwater wetlands, which are primarily in the inland areas of California; and
      Freshwater forested and scrub wetlands, which are commonly referred to as riparian habitat.

    Proceedings

    The Center for Wetlands at the University of Florida, the first of its kind in the world, was founded in 1973 by H.T. Odum. His goal was to use the Center as a focal point for both basic ecological research on wetlands as well as their sustainable use in meeting environmental management needs of the society. The Center quickly became the forum for interfacing traditional engineers with ecologists especially regarding the use of natural and constructed wetlands for waste water treatment. Not only was the Center the first academic group to propose and implement the use of natural systems for waste treatment, but this effort was largely responsible for the development of the entire field of ecological engineering. Currently, such "green" engineering has become the focus of major engineering schools throughout northern and central Europe.

    Wetlands Reserve Program
    The Wetlands Reserve Program is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance wetlands on their property. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides technical and financial support to help landowners with their wetland restoration efforts. The NRCS goal is to achieve the greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program. This program offers landowners an opportunity to establish long-term conservation and wildlife practices and protection.
