Research ecologists at NWRC study causes and loss of threatened coastal ecosystems, and investigate how to stabilize, restore, and manage the coastal landscape. Inland grass beds and seagrass beds (some of the most valuable of fish nursery grounds, waterfowl foods, and beach stabilizers) are being diminished worldwide; barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico will suffer if their seagrasses are lost. Coastal saltwater and freshwater marshes are particularly endangered in Louisiana with losses of 90-130 square kilometers (35-50 square miles) a year. Coastal prairies in Texas and Louisiana have had dramatic losses with only about 1% of the original vast acreage remaining. Ecology Division
Western Environment's Ecology Division is dedicated to finding realistic, practical solutions to complicated ecological problems such as endangered species and wetlands. The key to working successfully with regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Army Corps of Engineers, is to identify and address natural resource regulatory issues early on in any project design. Western Environment and Ecology can assist with this process by inspecting and identifying probable environmental conflicts and helping you resolve them. Money spent early in the planning process will usually save you money in the long run.

Other organizations who are committed to stopping the Playa Vista Development. Southern California Gas Company stores 7 billion cubic feet of natural gas under / adjacent to Playa Vista. That is the equivalent of 250 Dodger Stadiums 100 feet high. Deadly underground gases at Playa Vista pose a serious threat to public health and safety. SoCalGas has used the ground under Playa Vista as a storage field for methane gas since the 1950's. Methane gas acts as a carrier, absorbing deadly hydrogen sulfide, benzene, and toluene, carrying them to the surface through fractures in the earth and hundreds of old leaking, abandoned gas/oil well bores.

WHAT'S NEW? The Wetlands committee just hosted a successful session at the annual conference. Bethany Card moderated a session featuring presentations by Betsy Shreve-Gibb, Michael Turgeon, Stephen Fogg, Helen Priola, and Chad Sumner. The presentations included such topics as permit compliance for a design/build project, wetland protection, development of a stormwater management plan, and salt marsh replication. Currently a wetland construction specialty seminar is being considered for the summer of 2001. For more information regarding upcoming wetland events please see the NEWEA quarterly newsletter and check this page for updates.
WHAT IS THE WETLANDS COMMITTEE? The NEWEA Wetlands Committee is a group of 7 to 20 persons from regulatory agencies, consulting firms, public authorities, and universities who are interested or involved in wetland issues. The committee meets every few months to discuss changes in federal and state wetland policies and regulations and to plan various activities including wetland technical sessions and conferences, wetland-related publications, and wetland-related outreach to NEWEA members, students, or the general public. The only requirements for joining the wetlands committee are: 1) all committee members must be members of NEWEA/WEF; and 2) all members must commit to actively participate in committee meetings and responsibilities. For more information, or to get added to the Wetlands Committee mailing list, please contact
