Pulp and paper mills pollute our water, air, and soil. The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest and most polluting industries in the world; it is the third most polluting industry in North America. There are about 500 kraft mills, and many thousands of other types of pulp and paper mills, in the world. Primary concerns include the use of chlorine-based bleaches and resultant toxic emissions to air, water, and soil. With global annual growth forecast at 2.5%, the industry and its negative impacts could double by 2025. People need paper products, but we also need sustainable, environmentally safe production Why Does Pulp Pollution Matter? Pulp and paper is the third largest industrial polluter to air, water, and land in both Canada and the United States, and releases well over a hundred million kg of toxic pollution each year (National Pollutant Release Inventory, 1996). Making paper also consumes vast quantities of trees Water Pollution
Pulp mills are voracious water users. Their consumption of fresh water can seriously harm habitat near mills, reduce water levels necessary for fish, and alter water temperature, a critical environmental factor for fish. Mill owners say they are unable to institute water conservation and recycling because the concentrated effluent would kill fish (British Columbia COFI Pollution Prevention Workshop, June 1997, Environment Canada PPER Consultations, June 2000).

Providing Innovative Solutions In
Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems
Progressive Environmental offers a wide variety of equipment and process solutions to the water and wastewater issues faced by industrial, commercial, municipal and agricultural operators. With over thirty years experience, we can assist you in planning for current upgrades and future expansions.
Ionizer / Descaler Systems
Untreated process water leaves mineral deposits on the internal surfaces of pipes and heating units. When mineral build-up occurs, it restricts water flow and can cause costly down-time, maintenance, and innefficiency. Adding chemicals to water will treat the build-up, but chemicals are expensive and hazardous to the environment. The safest and most effective way to treat water is through a natural process that prevents minerals from crystalizing and building up on the pipe surfaces.
Filtration Systems
Progressive has an extensive line of water filtration systems. Individual units from 3/4" to 24" provide filtration from 3600 microns to 1 micron. In flow rates up to 12,000 GPM, these filters offer full flow filtration at a reasonable cost, low pressure drop, and easy manual or automatic self-cleaning. Filters are available in carbon or stainless steel with Progressive's options pressure drop Sentinel Alarm System.
Solids Removal Systems
Progressive can provide you with several options for the removal of solids from your water or wastewater. Our line of centrifugal solids separators can remove 98% of 200 mesh or larger sand, grit, and other solids from 10 to 6000 gpm. Our vacuum filter is a self-contained, dewatering system that filters sludges down to a half micron with filtering areas from 3 to 500 square feet. An economical solution for de-watering wastewaters is our filter press system which produces up to a 55% dry solid cake in sizes from 4 to 20 cubic feet. The Gravity Clarification Filter reduces wastewater volumes by 90%, producing a clean effluent and a dry encapsulated solid ready for landfill disposal. Finally, our Rotary Auger Strainer allows you to remove materials larger than 3/8" from your waste sludge.
