Water pollution in the Great Lakes
The pollution of our waterways became a national issue in June of 1969, the day that the Cuyahoga River, flowing through Cleveland, Ohio, on its way to Lake Erie, caught on fire because it was so polluted. Although this was not the first time that the Cuyahoga River had been in flames, the 1969 fire caught the attention of the nation and the fight began for increased water pollution controls, which eventually led to the Great Lakes Water Quality Act and Clean Water Act in the 1970s. Water pollution is defined as a change in the chemical, physical and biological health of a waterway due to human activity. Ways that humans have affected the quality of the Great Lakes water over the centuries include sewage disposal, toxic contamination through heavy metals and pesticides, overdevelopment of the water's edge, runoff from agriculture and urbanization, and air pollution.

Effects of water pollution Water pollution affects the health of the waterway, the health of the organisms living in and around the waterway, and, eventually, the health of humans. The effects of water pollution can range from aquatic deformities to contaminated fish to "dead" lakes. Aquatic diseases and deformities
As virtual "canaries in a gold mine," the deteriorating health of fish and wildlife speaks volumes about the need to clean up the Great Lakes. Heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and human-made organic chemicals such as pesticides, biomagnify as they move up the food chain, resulting in tumors and death for predatory animals, such as lake trout, herring gulls, and even humans. Toxic pollutants can also alter the genetic makeup of an organism, resulting in either death or extreme deformities. Studies have found cormorants suffering from cross-billed syndrome at rates 42 percent times the natural occurence, while terns exhibit birth defects from dioxin, PCBs and furan exposure at 31 times the normal levels. Other examples of deformities include large fish tumors and three-legged frogs. Human health issues
Persistant Organic Pollutants
, or POPs, such as dioxin, PCBs and DDT, are chemical substances that persist in the environment and bioaccumulate through the food web; therefore, POPs can also cause sickness and disease in humans, who are at the end of the food chain. People who regularly consume a lot of fish will have larger levels of toxic chemicals in their bodies than those who only eat fish occasionally. While scientists are still studying the effects of high chemical levels in humans, studies have suggested that toxic chemicals can lead to reproductive problems, cancer and neurological disorders.

Everyone is against water pollution... but how does it happen, and how can it be prevented?
Water is Essential for Life
It covers 71% of the earth's surface and makes up 65 % of our bodies. Everyone wants clean water to drink, for recreation, and just to enjoy looking at. If water becomes polluted, its loses its value to us economically and aesthetically, and can become a threat to our health and to the survival of the fish living in it and the wildlife that depends on it.
How does water pollution occur?
Although some kinds of water pollution can occur through natural processes, it is mostly a result of human activities. We use water daily in our homes and industries, about 150 gallons per day per person in the United States. The water we use is taken from lakes and rivers, and from underground (groundwater); and after we have used it and contaminated it most of it returns to these locations. The used water of a community is called wastewater, or sewage. If it is not treated before being discharged into waterways, serious pollution is the result. Historically, it has taken humanity quite a bit of time to come to grips with this problem. Water pollution also occurs when rain water runoff from urban and industrial areas and from agricultural land and mining operations makes its way back to receiving waters (river, lake or ocean) and into the ground.
What are some different types of water pollution?

Water Pollution: Overview
A water pollutant is any substance that decreases the quality of water. Water pollution is a serious problem. As mentioned in the Hydrosphere puzzle piece, only a small portion of Earth's water is freshwater. This is the type of water we need for survival. As pollution of freshwater increases, the amount of useable freshwater decreases. Photo: Raw sewage being piped directly into a Wheeling Creek tributary. Photo courtesy of Dr. Ben Stout. There are many types of pollutants. Common water pollutants include acid mine drainage agricultural runoff sewage , and dredging . Sources of pollution are classified according to the way they enter the environment. There are two major classes of pollutants: point-source and non-point-source. Point-source pollutants can be traced to their original source. Point-source pollutants are discharged directly from pipes or spills. Raw sewage draining from a pipe directly into a stream is an example of a point-source water pollutant. Non-point-source pollutants cannot be traced to a specific original source. These pollutants can only be traced to a general area. Non-point sources of pollution include

News Flash: (April 20th, 2002) Hello everyone! I'm back to reconstruct the web page! Yeah! This site has been up for 2 years! And it's so popular! Please come here frequently around June, where my summer holiday starts. I'm going to put a flash intro very soon!
I'm already a High School student! It's hard to have time to fix my site. Yes! It's almost done! Oh yeah. By the way. I don't know why the site loads so slow... dunno why. This is a project done by some 7th graders in Hong Kong, attending Hong Kong International School. This is a project we are giving to the world, because it is a subject that concerns all of us around the world. This is not only for our water pollution project, but for the world to know about. We have put this project together, to help animals, and the next generation, to have a better world. It is up to us students of this generation to look toward. This is a matter that has been going on for years. Why do people say, "A better environment starts at home, but no one is cooperating to help this matter." So as you go through our project we hope you will reflect and do things to help this world, to become a better environment.

Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Clean Water Act) (33 U.S.C. 1251 - 1376; Chapter 758; P.L. 845, June 30, 1948; 62 Stat. 1155). As amended by: The original 1948 statute (Ch. 758; P.L. 845), the Water Pollution Control Act, authorized the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service, in cooperation with other Federal, state and local entities, to prepare comprehensive programs for eliminating or reducing the pollution of interstate waters and tributaries and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. During the development of such plans, due regard was to be given to improvements necessary to conserve waters for public water supplies, propagation of fish and aquatic life, recreational purposes, and agricultural and industrial uses. The original statute also authorized the Federal Works Administrator to assist states, municipalities, and interstate agencies in constructing treatment plants to prevent discharges of inadequately treated sewage and other wastes into interstate waters or tributaries. Since 1948, the original statute has been amended extensively either to authorize additional water quality programs, standards and procedures to govern allowable discharges, funding for construction grants or general program funding. Amendments in other years provided for continued authority to conduct program activities or administrative changes to related activities.

Swarms Of Tiny Robots To Monitor Water Pollution The University of Southern California School of Engineering has received a $1.5 million research grant from the National Science Foundation to create swarms of microscopic robots to monitor potentially dangerous microorganisms in the ocean. "With increasing urban runoff, sewage spills and blooms of harmful algae off heavily populated coastal areas, it is very important to be able to sense, and then identify, particular ocean microorganisms quickly," said Ari Requicha, a USC professor of computer science and the project's principal investigator. "The quicker we learn that a pathogen is present in the water, the sooner we can warn people and begin action to correct the situation." The project spans the fields of nanotechnology, robotics, computer science and marine biology, but is centered on the development of the ultra-small robotic sensors and software systems to control them. Requicha directs the USC School of Engineering's Laboratory for Molecular Robotics where his team has been experimenting with nanometer-scale structures for nearly seven years. (One nanometer is one/one-billionth of a meter. A nanometer is to a meter what a small grape is to the entire Earth.)

What is water pollution?
Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives (in) it. When humans drink polluted water it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuited for the desired use.
What are the major water pollutants?
There are several classes of water pollutants. The first are disease-causing agents. These are bacteria, viruses, protozoa and parasitic worms that enter sewage systems and untreated waste. More information on health effects of microrganisms A second category of water pollutants is oxygen -demanding wastes; wastes that can be decomposed by oxygen-requiring bacteria. When large populations of decomposing bacteria are converting these wastes it can deplete oxygen levels in the water. This causes other organisms in the water, such as fish, to die.
A third class of water pollutants is water-soluble inorganic pollutants, such as acids, salts and toxic metals. Large quantities of these compounds will make water unfit to drink and will cause the death of aquatic life.
