the world, including our tap water. The Environmental Protection Agency has found more than 700 pollutants in US drinking water.

water wa ter pollution
Three quarters of the world's surface is water, but 99% of that is unusable to us because it is found in oceans and glaciers. Only 1% of the Earth's water is usable. A small portion of the water we use comes from rivers, streams and lakes. Most of it is ground water from cracks and crevices beneath the Earth's surface. Around the world, drinking water is being contaminated by agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, animal waste, mining, leaking garbage dumps, industrial and household chemicals, acid rain, sewage and oil or chemical spills from factories. If we do not learn to care for the small percentage of the Earth's water that is usable, we may come to appreciate this natural treasure the hard way. "In Oklahoma, oil has leaked to a nearby creek, where it forms a sticky layer on the water's surface and coats the banks. The oil's toxicity has rendered the water uninhabitable to most forms of life, and it is no longer fit for animals to drink." (J.W. Maurits la Riviere
