Like Water for Chocolate
Alfonso Arau, Mexico, 1993, 114 minutes The most successful foreign language film in the US in 1993, and a surprisingly lucid adaptation of the magical realism literary genre into conventional filmic grammar; Like Water For Chocolate is a consummate piece of cinema. Blending food, sex, mysticism and history into a compelling yarn, it cruises along nicely and doesn't disappoint. Tita is the youngest of three daughters in a Mexican family at the turn of the century. Being the youngest she is forbidden to marry and must instead look after her mother. She falls in love with Pedro, though, who asks for her hand. Tita's mother refuses and offers him Rosaura, Tita's elder sister, and Pedro accepts to be close to Tita. Tita reacts by pouring all her emotions into her cooking, with dramatic results: her sister's wedding cake makes all the guests sick; a year later she imbues a quails dish with her latent sexual desires, and her other sister Gertrudis is carried off naked by a soldier of the Revolution. Pedro and his family move away and Tita gets married, but their love remains etemal through many other upsets, culminating in a memorable climax. Arau's adaptation of the hugely successful novel by Laura Esquivel retains many of the magical realist elements, such as the flood of tears at the beginning, the ridiculously long piece of knitting, and the fiery ending. It also keeps the food motif central with many truly mouth-watering dishes. However it's the deft characterisation and evocative cinematography that really render this a cinematic work unhampered by its literary roots. The performances are sympathetic and credible, the stand-outs being Lumi Cavazos as Tita and Claudette Maille, who is superb as the errant Gertrudis.

104. The Weight Of Water
Mongoose reviews the film.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/weight_of_water.html
The Weight of Water The Weight of Water and the recent film Possession have some things in common. Both are based on novels (this one based on the one by Anita Shreve). Both have dual stories, one in the past and one in the present, with the latter investigating the former. And both use similar themes in the past and present to connect the threads. The difference is that there was a lot more substance to Possession than The Weight of Water . It is an overly ambitious work that nearly crumbles under its own weight. In the present, photographer Jean Janes (Catherine McCormack, Spy Game The Tailor of Panama ) is heading off on a mini vacation to a remote island to investigate the murder of two women in the early 1870s. She is bringing her husband, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Thomas (Sean Penn, I Am Sam Dogtown and Z-Boys ), brother-in-law Rich (Josh Lucas, Sweet Home Alabama A Beautiful Mind ), and Rich's girlfriend Adaline (Elizabeth Hurley, Serving Sara Bedazzled Problems emerge immediately. Jean and Thomas are having marital issues, and having a beautiful woman like Adaline prancing around in next to nothing is not helping. Worse, Adaline and Thomas already know each other and she is a big fan of his work. Thomas is distant, and doesn't seem to care about what Jean is doing. Director Kathryn Bigelow (

water in The City. If the supply is severely interrupted, the city will surely die. water Basics What is water? Why do we need it?
http://www.fi.edu/city/water/
Water in The City In one kitchen, in one apartment, in one building, on one block, in one neighborhood, of one city, a young man goes to the faucet and fills a kettle with water. At the very same instant, thousands of other people in that same city may also be tapping into the water supply. How is it possible? Start brainstorming. Where can you find water in the city? Fountains? Rivers? Kitchen sinks? Puddles? Lakes? Swimming pools? Reservoirs? Sewers? Creeks? Rain? Now, think about this: how are all of the sources of water related? Throughout history, cities have survived or failed because of water. The water supply in a city is the vital lifeblood that keeps a city going. While the water supply is healthy, citizens take it for granted. If the supply is severely interrupted, the city will surely die.
Water Basics
What is water? Why do we need it? Most citizens learn at a very early age the importance of water. Basic water information offers a foundation for learning to respect and conserve this precious natural resource.
Water Science
Where is water produced? How pure is water? Anyone who has ever taken a drink of tap water needs to understand the science of water. Consider the chemistry of water before you pour your next glass.

gets caught in the cultural crossfire
BY JASMINE YUEN-CARRUCAN
In February this year I traveled to India to work as a camera assistant on the film Water , which was to be directed by Deepa Mehta (the third film of the trilogy after Fire and Earth ). It was to be a period piece about the plight of widows in India to be made in the city of Varanasi. After many protests and threats of violence from various political/religious parties, the filming was stopped before it ever really had a chance to begin. Enclosed is an article I have written on the events and reasons as to why filming was halted. I have worked as a camera assistant in the Australian film industry for five years. During this time, I have been involved with a number of good and bad Australian and American films. ( Shine , Babe 2, Holy Smoke, Mission Impossible 2 Water would make people ponder this for a moment. That is why I wrote it.
In February of this year (2000), Deepa Mehta was to direct the film Water in India. It was the third of a trilogy of films for this Indian-born woman who now resides in Canada. The first was

out of 4 Starring: Mark Harmon , Harley Jane Kozak Director: Rick Stevenson Rated: PG RunTime: 98 Minutes Release Date: August Genres: Comedy Kids Sci-Fi/Fantasy Buy this DVD ... Half.com *Also starring: Joshua Jackson , Sara Wayne, Willie Nark-Orn, Frank Sotonoma Salsedo, Morris Panych, Tamsin Kelsey Review by Steve Rhodes 0 stars out of 4 MAGIC IN THE WATER is a boring Oreo cookie commercial billed as a feature-length movie for kids. We have the dad, Jack Black (Mark Harmon), forcing himself against his will to spent four weeks in the wilderness with his children, fourteen-year-old Joshua (Joshua Jackson) and 10 year old Ashley (Sarah Liscette Wayne). To make up for lost time at work he carries four cellular phones. At least two of them ring in all the early scenes and the running joke is where is his lost cellular phone. Nearly split my side I was laughing so hard at that long series of jokes. The whole script by Icel Massey and Rick Stevenson is firmly based in boredom with a little stupidity and cliches thrown in every now and then for variety. Among one of the many typical lines is Joshua's who describes his camping goals as "I'm doing the man thing here. Study death in the face. Stuff like that." Don't you wish you had children so eloquent?
