Course Description
Visual anthropology is premised on the belief that other cultures can be understood through the visual symbols that they use, based on an analysis derived from long term participant/observation of that culture. Photographs and films of other cultures have a seemingly objective explanatory power that masks the subjectivity implicit in their making. We will analyze the history, philosophy, ethics, production and consumption of ethnographic film and ethnophotography within both the academic field of anthropology as well as broader popular culture. For the final project in this class, students will produce their own 5-10 minute ethnographic short film using digital video (DV) cameras and Apple's iMovie or FinalCut system, using the principles of visual anthropology. This course is offered as a First Year Course with the residential option. New this year, we will be working with St. Paul Public Housing Agency to produce 4 ethnographic films about diversity and multiculturalism in their public housing units. The units are:

Introduction to Visual Anthropology Anthropology 195/295 Instructor: R. Bruce Broce bbroce@nimbus.ocis.temple.edu Summer 1999, Summer 2000 Bruce motivates his students! Course Description This course provides an introduction to current anthropological theories of visual communication and to contemporary methods of critiquing, producing, and displaying visual representations of cultural phenomena. Seminar style discussions in the morning will critically explore a wide range of concepts and issues salient to the field of visual anthropology. As such, each morning seminar will analyze both the written texts and the films/videos currently centered in the discourse of visual anthropology. Hands-on practicums in the afternoon will involve applying these critical perspectives to the production and editing of our own video footage of cultural activities in the Burlington area. There will be on average two articles/chapters per class of required reading. Students are expected to come to the seminars having done the reading in order to facilitate an arena of critical discussion. There will be at least one film/video screened per class. Students will be required to keep a log on each of these films/videos. Each log entry should detail the film's style, content, and intent. This will be done in order to hone a critical perspective towards the viewing of visual texts. In addition to submitting their logs at the end of the course, students will write a four page essay which addresses a contemporary issue in visual anthropology.

It explores how different cultures are depicted in a range of media, in particular ethnographic film and photography, and deals with the analytical and ethical issues raised by these representations. It considers how the analysis of art and material culture can be used by the anthropologist to gain insight into cultural forms and values. It also examines how different cultural groups represent themselves, to each other and to outsiders through art, material culture and performance. Introductory reading Appadurai, A. 1986.

This course in visual anthropology explores several related topics surrounding the use of still photography: what photographs show (and do not show), how our culture uses photographic images of non-Western peoples, and how photography can be used appropriately in anthropological research. During the term we also will be developing critical toolsquestions, concepts, techniquesfor describing, interpreting, and analyzing images. Some of the specific questions we will explore include:
  • How have photographs of non-Western peoples been used in our culture?
  • What kinds of bias and stereotypes, stylistic conventions, commercial and political agendas shape what the camera records?
  • Who controlled and created the historical images of people in other cultures that we see today? What are some of the problems involved in using old photographs to reconstruct the histories of other peoples?
  • To what degree do images taken by indigenous or "native" photographers differ from those taken by outsiders?

Visual Anthropology: Photography As a Research Method > Customer Review #1: A great resource

I was required to buy Visual Anthropology for my Visual Sociology class my sophomore year of college. This is one i didnt sell back to the bookstore after the class was over because it is so useful. It is a great book to help a person learn how to use a camera as a research tool and get the most out of it.

A Testement and Epitaph to Human Cultural Diversity Awesome book. It is made up entirely of captioned photos taken in the, apparently, the 1920's. It subject is indigineous cultures around the world. It's an amazing testement to the diversity of human cultures while also being an epitaph for many of these cultures no longer exist or have been absorbed into Westernized one we live in today. The captions are enthnocentric but the photos boggle the mind. Ethnography as an Unknown I doubt that you, the reader, will often encounter a review of a book that the reviewer hasn't read (or maybe that's more common than we know). I will eventually buy and read this particular book, if only to see if it's as enthralling as is the original edition from decades ago. I may or may not have the original edition, nobody really knows. The origins of the book seem to be shrouded in mystery. Hopefully, Mr. Stiffler provides some expository information in his introduction. My copy lists no author, date of publication or other information; only the cryptic "New York, Manhattan House." Other than the preceeding words, I'll write no more other than to say, "You must have this book for your personal library," and "I'll soon add this particular edition to mine."
