    is a scholarly quarterly journal presenting original articles, commentary, discussions, film reviews, and book reviews on anthropological and ethnographic topics. The journal focuses on the study of human behavior through visual means. Experts in the field also examine visual symbolic forms from a cultural-historical framework and provide a cross-cultural study of art and artifacts.     The Society for Visual Anthropology is a section of the American Anthropological Association. The Society for visual Anthropology promotes a broad range of theoretical approaches to visual representation and media. Both research methods and teaching strategies fall within the scope of the society. SVA members are involved in all aspects of production, dissemination, and analysis of visual forms. Works in film, video, photography, and computer-based multimedia explore signification, perception, and communication-in-context, as well as a multitude of other anthropological and ethnographic themes.
    How to become a member of the Society For Visual Anthropology (SVA).
    New members may enroll in both the AAA and the SVA at the same time. Membership is for one year and includes subscriptions to the Anthropology Newsletter, American Anthropologist and the Visual Anthropology Review. Dues are $155 (professional) $75 (student). Members receive a subscription to the biannual SVA journal, the Visual Anthropology Review, which publishes articles on the cutting edge of visual research theory and practice.
    Current AAA members may enroll in the SVA for yearly dues of $25 (professional) and $15 (student). This includes a subscription to Visual Anthropology Review.

    II. Still Photography "A photograph is at once a direct representation of reality and the result of an utterly subjective choice." David Sapir On Fixing Ethnographic Shadows Still photography was used in ethnology for various purposes before ethnography was a standard practice in anthropology. Early pioneers in photography included Maxime Du Camp, who, working under commission from the French Government in 1852 published Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie , a series of calotypes of the Middle East dubbed "the first photographically illustrated travel book" ( Banta 1986: 39). In America, John K. Hillers photographed the southwest for the Bureau of American Ethnology in the 1870s ( Banta Banta Although considered one of the pioneers in ethnographic photography, Franz Boas participated in a new kind of modification in his representations of indigenous cultures - retouching - in an effort to transcend what he considered a major weakness of visual ethnographic representation. This weakness was the representation of the frozen moment at the expense of depth in historical understanding ( Banta 1986: 106). The concentration on, or preference for, formally ritualized aspects of culture reflected the assumption of Boas's generation that ritual contained distilled history and cultural wisdom, and that as such it was the most meaningful remnant of culture (
