Vaccination Guidelines for Dogs and Cats
Recently there has been much discussion about vaccination schedules for cats and dogs. Vaccinations are important as they protect the animals from infectious diseases. Owners and breeders should discuss vaccination strategies for their animals with their veterinarians, they can recommend the most effective regimen for their animal patients. The purpose of vaccinations is to stimulate humoral and/or cellular immune responses and to generate an appropriate immune memory so that subsequent exposure of the animal to the infectious agent will not result in a disease state. In young animals, the presence of maternally derived, passive immunity may interfere with this process, as may other factors such as poor nutritional status, concurrent disease, and anesthesia. Because maternally derived antibodies may block an immune response to vaccines in very young puppies and kittens, a series of vaccines are given at appropriate intervals which should then result in active immunity against the vaccine antigens and the corresponding naturally found antigens.

Clinical Services
Oncology Service The Oncology Service is involved in all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. We are also dedicated to the teaching of veterinary students and the advancement of cancer therapy through basic science research and clinical trials of new cancer therapies.
The Oncology Service includes the medical oncology unit and the radiation oncology unit. Being part of a teaching hospital means that we have access to many specialists in other disciplines and advanced technologies such as computerized treatment planning and state of art imaging. This allows us to provide optimal care for our patients. Some of the services at the VMTH that we work closely with include: clinical pathology, dentistry, dermatology, emergency/critical care, histopathology, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, radiology and surgery.

    Welcome to Purdue's Oncology HomePage
Purdue Comparative Oncology Program (PCOP) HERBICIDE EXPOSURE AND URINARY BLADDER CANCER Investigators at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine have recently conducted a case control study in Scottish Terriers to determine risk factors for the development of urinary bladder cancer (transitional cell carcinoma, TCC). Results of this case control study were recently published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (April 15, 2004; volume 224; pages1290-1297). Scottish Terriers have previously been found to be at higher risk of TCC than other breeds of dogs. The study was performed to determine if exposure to lawn chemicals further increases the risk of TCC in this breed of dogs. Environmental exposure histories were compared between 83 Scottish Terrier dogs with TCC (cases) and 83 Scottish Terrier dogs of approximately the same age with other health-related conditions (controls). A significantly increased risk of TCC was found for dogs exposed to lawns or gardens treated with herbicides and insecticides or herbicides alone, but not with insecticides alone, compared with dogs exposed to untreated lawns or gardens. These findings suggest that Scottish Terrier dogs, as well as other dogs of high-risk breeds for TCC, be restricted from lawns treated with herbicides until additional risk studies are conducted. With the publication of our findings, the large number of requests for information related to this study has exceeded our capacity to respond on an individual basis. Further information can be obtained from:

Toxoplasmosis in Cats T oxoplasmosis, a disease of cats and other mammalian species, is caused by a parasitic protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii The Life Cycle of Toxoplasma
During the intraintestinal infection cycle in the cat, some Toxoplasma organisms released from the ingested cysts penetrate more deeply into the wall of the intestine and multiply as tachyzoite forms. Very soon these forms spread out from the intestine to other body sites, starting the extraintestinal infection cycle. Eventually the cat's immune system restrains this stage of the organism, which then enters a dormant or "resting" stage by forming cysts in muscles and brain. Most cysts probably remain dormant for the life of the host. The extraintestinal infection cycle occurs not only in cats but also in the intermediate hosts (including humans). Top of Page Signs
    toxoplasmosis Diagnosis

The presence of significant antibody levels in a healthy cat suggests that the cat has been previously infected and now is most likely immune and not excreting oocysts. The absence of antibody in a healthy cat suggests that the cat is susceptible to infection and thus would shed oocysts for one to two weeks following exposure. Treatment and Prevention
No vaccine is as yet available to prevent either Toxoplasma infection or toxoplasmosis in cats, humans, or other species. Research in this area is in progress.
