... home LOAN POLICIES OF THE WESTERN FOUNDATION OF VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY... The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (WFVZ) loans skin specimens from its research collections for scientific and educational purposes that follow the goals and objectives of this institution. Initial inquiries can be made via e-mail or telephone. Formal loan requests must be submitted on institution letterhead. Bird specimens may be loaned to any qualified institution in the name of a professional ornithologist. With proper justification, investigators who are not located at or affiliated with an accredited institution can make arrangements to have specimens sent to a nearby facility, as long as a professional ornithologist at the institution is willing to accept responsibility for the specimens. The "Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology" should be acknowledged in any resulting publication that is at least partially based on information obtained from examination of the material, and we request a reprint of any such publication. Specimens from our main collection are to be borrowed for research purposes only; they are not to be used for teaching purposes, placed on display, or handled by nonprofessionals. Graduate student requests for loans of WFVZ material must be authorized and counter-signed by the student's major professor. The borrower may not transfer loans to any other institution without written permission from the WFVZ.

Vertebrate Zoology is the science of animals with backbones, that is, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fishes. At the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, we investigate the systematics, phylogenetic history and geographical distribution of those animals. Focal research points include the phylogeny of birds, and the distribution and phylogeny of tropical freshwater fishes. We also maintain a long-term interest in threatened freshwater fishes of Sweden. The department also provides repository for the national wildlife , which are specimens of threatened animals found dead in nature. The Bird-Ringing Centre administrates the bird ringing and recapture reports of ringed birds, and performs research on bird migratory behaviour. FishBase is global information system for fishes, with a secretariat within the department maintaining and developing the database in collaboration within a global consortium. Mammals

Lizard External Morphology External Morphology Image Regenerating Tail Many lizards can regenerate a lost tail. The new tail is never as long as the original, and the vertebrate do not regeneration. Instead, a rod of cartilage develops for support. Lizard Skull Note the reduction in the size of bones. This makes the skull lighter. Note the movable quadrate is missing on the left side of this specimen. Lizard Skull Image Hemipenes Male squamate reptiles have paired copulatory organs called hemipenes that lie at the base of their tails just behind the cloaca. When copulating, the male everts one hemipenis (turns it inside out and extends it from the cloaca). Sperm travels through a groove in the hemipenis to the opening of the oviduct in the female’s cloaca. Lizard Skeleton Compare this with the alligator and snake skeletons. Alligator Skull Alligator Skull Image Development of a Secondary Palate The fossil record of crocodilians shows an important development of a bony separation between the nasal passages and the mouth; a secondary palate. In early forms, as in amphibians, the internal nares opened to the mouth in an anterior location.

Related Category: Vertebrate Zoology sloth [sl O th, slOth] Pronunciation Key , arboreal mammal found in Central and South America distantly related to armadillos and anteaters. Sloths live in tropical forests, where they sleep, eat, and travel through the trees suspended upside down, clinging to branches with the powerful curved claws of their forelimbs and hindlimbs. Algae that grow on the hair impart a greenish color to the coat so that it blends with the foliage. There is no tail. The three-toed sloth ( Bradypus ) is about the size of a house cat, with a dense, furry coat and yellowish face. It has three toes on the front feet and five on the hind feet. It feeds almost exclusively on the leaves, buds, and stems of Cecropia, a tropical relative of the mulberry. The somewhat larger two-toed sloth ( Choloepus ) has very long hair. It eats a less restricted vegetarian diet. Sloths move sluggishly but can strike swiftly and powerfully if attacked. Huge ground sloths (see

hedgehog, Vertebrate Zoology
Related Category: Vertebrate Zoology hedgehog, Old World insectivorous mammal of the family Erinaceidae, related to moles and shrews. The spiny hedgehogs are found in Africa and Eurasia, except SE Asia. They have rounded bodies up to 13 in. (33 cm) long, very short tails, and pointed snouts; their backs and sides are covered with stiff spines and their undersides with coarse hair. They are usually brown and yellow in color. When frightened, a hedgehog rolls itself into a tight ball with its spines pointing outward; when rolled up it is invulnerable to almost any predator. The European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, is about 9 in. (23 cm) long, with small ears. It is strictly nocturnal, spending the day in a burrow in the undergrowth; it hibernates in midwinter. The name hedgehog describes the tendency of these animals to make their burrows in the hedgerows that surround English fields. Hedgehogs are not related to hogs, but they root in the ground for food in the manner of hogs. Their diet consists of small animals, including worms, insects, frogs, mice, and even poisonous snakes; they have a high level of immunity to viper venom. A hedgehog will bite a snake and then roll itself up as the snake strikes, repeating this procedure until the snake is dead. E. europaeus

What was that bird I saw during my morning beach walk?
What is the best way to avoid being bitten by a snake?
Which local animals are endangered?

The Department of Vertebrate Zoology is your local resource for helping you learn about and enjoy the environment around us.
The Museum originally was founded as The Museum of Comparative Oology in 1916 and these same collections are housed within the Vertebrate Zoology Department. Historic collections contain specimens from as early as 1849 and have grown to a regional collection of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and eggs, and mammals containing over 40,000 specimens!
The Department is always active preparing, cataloging and archiving specimens within our collections, while overseeing the animals in the exhibits. As a public resource, we value our role in answering public queries and helping scientists, students, and the private sector utilize our collections for research. The staff scientists conduct both contracted and personal research. For collection queries or further information regarding the Vertebrate Zoology Department, click on an email address below or phone us at (805) 682-4711.

- A university course should be a joyful, fruitful and challenging exchange of ideas. I will do everything I can to make it so, and I hope you will do likewise. It will require a high level of work, competence and achievement, so please do not assume it is a walk in the park. In this course the ability to memorize vast quantities of information will only get you half way there. Whenever possible I will emphasize comprehending concepts, not memorizing facts. You must understand these concepts such that you are able to recognize them in different situations, and apply them in new and unexpected ways. The lectures will cover the evolutionary history of the major vertebrate groups and the general patterns that occurred in the main organ systems. The laboratories are designed to provide you with a comparative perspective of vertebrate anatomy and morphology, and will be integrated with the lectures as much as possible. This course represents a unique chance for you to examine the results and intricacies of millions of years of evolution of a group of animals. It should lead you to view

Organized in a taxonomic hierarchy, mammals are categorized according to: Order, Family, Subfamily, and Genus. The list shows nearly all current mammals (ie. those that are not extinct), and can either be browsed or used as a reference file. Mammal species can be searched by typing the appropriate search term to get a breakdown of the order in a hierarchical form. The reference guide consists of a few hundred pages of mammal classifications in no particular order or organizational structure.
