Course Information Index Offshore Awards ... Young Planners Welcome to the Department of Urban and Regional Planning
This course provides the background for those entering the urban and regional planning profession. It is the only course in Western Australia accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia. The distinguishing characteristic of this course is the use of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques in addressing environmental, social and design issues concerning the community. It is now widely accepted that successful human settlements must be properly planned and a range of statutory and non-statutory controls exist at all levels of government to protect the public interest in the development process. The involvement of individuals and community groups in the preparation and implementation of plans is now considered vital to successful development outcomes.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning forms part of the Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design at Curtin University of Technology.
The Faculty is progressive and exciting with 25 full time academic staff, some of whom teach on an interdisciplinary basis in two or more of the Faculty's Departments. Numerous industry based practitioners and guest lecturers also teach in the programme.

G eographers often work as planners to ensure that communities develop in an orderly way, along with the services necessary to support them. Planners must be able to develop building plans for subdivisions and housing projects. They need to understand all factors that affect the value of land and realestate. Planning is a rapidly expanding field, and geographers are filling a great many jobs.
Planning courses teach students how to prepare master plans that will benefit neighborhoods, communities, cities, and regions. Support courses include material on the geography of population, transportation, social services, utilities, and solid-waste disposal systems. Other topics include resource planning, land-use planning, and the delivery of municipal services (which involves the planning of police patrol routes, the location of firehouses and emergency medical services, and ways of making school bus routes shorter and more efficient).
Urban and Community Planner
Transportation Planner Transportation has become a major problem in ever large urban area in the world. Typically, commuters head into the middle of the city in the morning and back to the outskirts at the end of the day. This puts an enormous strain on transportation systems and creates the need for careful planning. Transportation planners try to balance the use of private vehicles with the use of public transportation by developing multimodal systems that utilize cars, buses, commuter trains, subways, and even streetcars and helicopters.

Research at the level of urban and regional planning is aimed at determining strategies which can facilitate sustainable urban development in peripheral desert areas. Since agriculture and rural settlement are limited by the constraints of the arid environment, understanding the specifics of desert urbanization (migration patterns, investment attractiveness, criteria for sustainable growth, etc.) is considered an essential requirement for sustaining future human settlement in peripheral desert regions. Recent investigations into urban and regional planning issues include: Development Peculiarities of Peripheral Desert Settlements For more details see: Portnov B., Erell E. These are reinforced through practical exercises which enable the student to gain direct experience of planning tasks and to understand more fully how planning operates in contemporary society. The course diagram illustrates this process and outlines the key areas of knowledge and the skills which are developed. The range of specialist subjects allows students to develop their interests in specific aspects of planning in greater depth.
