In recent years the number of ultrasonic breast examinations
has increased significantly due to the greater concern for breast disease detection and diagnosis,
the realization that X-ray mammography is not sufficiently sensitive or specific as a stand-alone imaging technique,
the desire to avoid unnecessary open biopsies, and the recent availability of high-quality scanning equipment
suitable for displaying breast anatomy and pathology.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks to everyone who's visited this site. We started out with just some monthly pregnancy pictures , a couple ultrasound photos , and the excitement of a new baby in our future.
Somehow Google , and other search engines, picked up our site, and we started getting lots of visitors and tons of emails from all over the world. Thanks to everyone who contacted us with their own pregnancy and baby stories, or to just say, "Hi".
Obviously, that 'new baby in our future' turned out to be Chloe, and we love her so much. Time flies, and now she's almost 2 years old... We've probably updated the site for the last time, but we'll keep the site up, and we'd still love to hear from you ! Thanks!

Using a conventional diagnostic ultrasound device and a position sensing device the possibility of creating threedimensional ultrasound images has been established. The 2-D ultrasound images of a Simens Sonoline SI400 are fit together with a Silicon Graphics Graphik Workstation to build a 3-D volume dataset. The position, where the grayscale data are inserted in the virtual volume is dependent on the location of the ultrasound head at the moment of ultrasound recording. Top
Arrangement
An ultrasound head of a medical imaging ultrasound device is connected to a sensor of the position sensing system Optotrak from Northern Digital. The location and orientation of the sound head can then be measured by the Optotrak. The image data of the Ultrasound device are digitalized by a video card of a computer and are provided to the software together with the position information of the ultrasound sensor. In the following figure the arrangement is shown.
Top
Performance
The ultrasound head is moved slowly across the body. The location and the ultrasound image are recorded continuously. Afterwards, the volume data set, resulted from the compound of ultrasound images, can be looked at by volume visualization techniques.

page. Another test which is routinely performed is the ultrasound. indicated.ultrasound Characteristics Which Suggest a Benign Nodule.
http://www.endocrineweb.com/noduleus.html
Once a thyroid nodule has been detected (or suspected), there are a few things that the physician wants to know before any recommendations can be made regarding what actions to take. Remember, the vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign and nothing to worry about, so the focus is on determining which ones have any reasonable chance of being cancerous. It is those few worrisome nodules which will need to be operated upon with that portion of the thyroid removed.
One of the first tests which is routinely performed is the Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy . The FNA will usually (but not always) tell if a nodule is benign or malignant. Often this is the only test which is needed The use of FNA and a lot more information about the potential for a thyroid nodule to be malignant is on another page.
Another test which is routinely performed is the ultrasound. This simple test uses sound waves to image the thyroid. The sound waves are emitted from a small hand-held transducer which is passed over the thyroid. A lubricant jelly is placed on the skin so that the sound waves transmit easier through the skin and into the thyroid and surrounding structures. This test is quick, accurate, cheap, painless, and completely safe. It usually takes only about 10 minutes and the results can be known almost immediately. Not all nodules need this test, but it is almost routine.
This is an ultrasound of a typical thyroid nodule...

To Guide Entry
Ultrasound imaging has become part of our lives in the last decade. We are now all familiar with the blurry black and white sonograms (ultrasound pictures) that show the unborn baby inside the mother’s uterus. Although it may take a little imagination on our part to understand that a round circle is the baby’s head, that does not prevent a proud mother-to-be from showing off her first baby picture. See sonogram below. Thirty four week fetus (figure available in print form) Reprinted by permission of Dr. K.J.W. Taylor, from “ Atlas of Gray Scale Ultrasonography ”, (c) 1978 by Churchill Livingstone. This unit emphasizes the medical applications of ultrasound. An important part of the unit is a collection of slides depicting ultrasound scans of various organs, showing both the normal condition as well as various pathological states. There are drawings that accompany and clarify many of these sonograms, because ultrasound pictures can be very difficult to understand without explanations. These slides are available by calling me at Polly T. McCabe Center (787-8758). This unit is designed primarily for biology, ninth-grade physical science, health and human physiology classes in high school, but could be easily adapted as well for the middle school level.

search tips
Ultrasound Imaging (US) Format for Printing Why is Ultrasound Done? Ultrasound imaging (also called ultrasound scanning or sonography) is a relatively inexpensive, fast and radiation-free imaging modality. Ultrasound is excellent for non-invasively imaging and diagnosing a number of organs and conditions, without x-ray radiation. Modern obstetric medicine (for guiding pregnancy and child birth) relies heavily on ultrasound to provide detailed images of the fetus and uterus. Ultrasound can show fetal development, and bodily function like breathing, urination, and movement. Ultrasound is also extensively used for evaluating the kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart, and blood vessels of the neck and abdomen. Ultrasound can also be used to guide fine needle, tissue biopsy to facilitate sampling cells from an organ for lab testing (for example, to test for cancerous tissue). Ultrasound imaging and ultrasound angiography are finding a greater role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of

Presentation A 40-year-old woman, 29 weeks pregnant, presented to the emergency room with painless vaginal bleeding. This is the patient's fourth pregnancy (G4 P3), and three prior births were by cesarean section.
Imaging Findings
Sagittal midline ultrasonography
Translabial ultrasonography
Transverse ultrasonography
Sagittal ultrasonography

Emergency obstetric ultrasound demonstrated a single live intrauterine gestation in breech presentation with unremarkable fetal survey. Sagittal midline image (Figure 1) shows placental tissue extending down to the region of the cervix. Translabial scan (Figure 2) demonstrates placental tissue partially covering the cervix. Transverse (Figure 3) and sagittal (Figure 4) transabdominal images demonstrate interruption of the normal hypoechoic rim of myometrial tissue beneath the placenta, suggesting abnormal placental attachment, placenta accreta, increta, or percreta.
Differential Diagnosis
The differential includes:
  • Placenta previa with normal placental attachment
  • Placenta previa with placenta accreta
  • Placenta previa with placenta increta
  • Placenta previa with placenta percreta
Diagnosis
Placenta previa and Placenta accreta
Discussion
Placenta previa is a condition in which placental tissue covers the cervix. Types include:
