Ultrasound scanning
Ultrasound scanning (ultrasonography) is a quick, easy, and relatively safe investigation which helps us in many areas of medicine.
Details
Ultrasound scanning (ultrasonography) is usually performed in the hospital, by a doctor or a radiographer. The scan works rather like sonar does in detecting submarines under the water. A device rather like a microphone is pressed against the area being scanned, often using some jelly to improve the contact. This device sends out very high frequency sound waves which go into area being examined, and bounce back when they hit an organ (like an echo bounces back when you shout across a valley). This is all processed by a computer, which produces a map of the area being scanned, like on a radar screen. The technique allows us to see static structures, but also to observe moving parts, eg the heart of a baby in the womb, or the valves inside an adult heart. Most scans are done from outside the body, through the skin, but some are done internally, using special probes eg in the vagina to better show up the womb, pelvic organs and pelvic floor. Ultrasound scanning (ultrasonography) is used to examine many parts of the body, and can give us great detail, but there are conditions and organs to which it is well suited, and others which need different techniques in order to investigate them.

    http://www.csse.uwa.edu.au/~bernard/us3d.html
Ultrasound - we cannot hear it, but we can use it to image objects concealed from the eye. It has been used since early this century in medical, geological and oceanographical applications. Three-dimensional ultrasound as a concept has existed since the 50s, better known as ultrasound holography. Ultrasound has been used in medicine since the Second World War and is recognised as a non-invasive, non-radiative, real-time and inexpensive imaging modality. For these reasons, and with the advent of three-dimensional medical imaging, there has been a renewed interest in ultrasound and three-dimensional ultrasound in particular. This resource aims to collect all publicly available information on three-dimensional ultrasound and make it available to everybody. Although the majority of research has been into medical uses of three-dimensional ultrasound (such is my own interest as well), I would like these pages to contain information from all disciplines since the very nature of this area is multidisciplinary. Please email to me anything that you find missing from these pages.
Due to the growing size of available information I've divided this resource into the following areas:
    • Research institutions involved in 3D ultrasound
    • Medical professionals using 3D ultrasound technology
    • Publications on 3D ultrasound
    • Commercial institutions offering 3D ultrasound technology

    Abstract
This paper describes the design of an ultrasound camera which has the resolution of 0.1mm. The camera allows the observation of the near surface structures of solid objects and is suitable for the finger ridge pattern imaging (i.e. pattern which is reflected in a fingerprint). The device can be used for a biometric identification of individuals (for access verification). It can also be employed for all other sorts of structures which have ultrasound detectable changes in the near surface structure, both natural and artificial (e.g. created for information recording). The paper describes the current version of the camera and the physical phenomena behind its operation. Presented are also perspectives of further development of the device.

    http://www.bmtp.akh-wien.ac.at/people/kollch1/artefakt.html
    Ultrasound Artefacts
In diagnostic ultrasound "artefact" is used for image phenomenons, that represent the real anatomical structure not correctly. An artefact can be defined as false, multiple or misleading information introduced by the imaging system or by interaction of ultrasound with the adjacent tissue. But in the case of medical diagnosis its appearance can be of diagnostic advantage also !
In general image artefacts can occur in each medical ultrasound. Then an interpretation of the image is complicated and can eliminate the structural information of objects looking for. Artefacts do occur due to some simple assumptions of the ultrasound propagation after generating in an imaging system. Without these assumptions developing of ultrasound imaging systems could not have been done. These assumptions are :
    • Propagation of ultrasound is straight ahead.
The ultrasound beam is infinite thin in its lateral and thickness direction.
In tissue the sound velocity is homogeneous and constant (around 1540 m/s).
The detected echo is originated by the last generated sound pulse.

    Overview
Our research group is working to develop and operate a system that allows a physician to see directly inside a patient, using augmented reality (AR). AR combines computer graphics with images of the real world. This project uses ultrasound echography imaging, laparoscopic range imaging, a video see-through head-mounted display (HMD), and a high-performance graphics computer to create live images that combine computer-generated imagery with the live video image of a patient. An AR system displaying live ultrasound data or laparoscopic range data in real time and properly registered to the part of the patient that is being scanned could be a powerful and intuitive tool that could be used to assist and to guide the physician during various types of ultrasound-guided and laparoscopic procedures.
    Head Mounted Display Research
Head mounted displays (HMDs) with appropriate characteristics for augmented reality are not commercially available. We have put a significant effort into modifying existing HMDs and building our own HMDs for use in our augmented reality projects.
