What are Obstetric Ultrasound Scans?
Obstetric Ultrasound is the use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy. Since its introduction in the late 1950’s ultrasonography has become a very useful diagnostic tool in Obstetrics. Currently used equipments are known as real-time scanners , with which a continous picture of the moving fetus can be depicted on a monitor screen. Very high frequency sound waves of between 3.5 to 7.0 megahertz (i.e. 3.5 to 7 million cycles per second) are generally used for this purpose. They are emitted from a transducer which is placed in contact with the maternal abdomen, and is moved to "look at" (likened to a light shined from a torch) any particular content of the uterus. Repetitive arrays of ultrasound beams scan the fetus in thin slices and are reflected back onto the same transducer. The information obtained from different reflections are recomposed back into a picture on the monitor screen (a sonogram, or ultrasonogram). Movements such as fetal heart beat and malformations in the feus can be assessed and measurements can be made accurately on the images displayed on the screen. Such measurements form the cornerstone in the assessment of gestational age, size and growth in the fetus.

ultrasound Exams. This page is for you if you are curious about whatan ultrasound procedure is like. Types of ultrasound Examinations.
http://www.sru.org/exams/
Ultrasound Exams This page is for you if you are curious about what an ultrasound procedure is like. You or a loved one may have had an ultrasound procedure prescribed by your physician. When you call to schedule your procedure, the radiologist, an M.D. specializing in diagnosis or one of his co-workers may talk to you on the telephone to answer any questions. Because there are many different types of ultrasound tests, there are different ways to prepare. The radiologist probably has your previous x-ray and imaging studies to review with your ultrasound examination, but sometimes the radiologist will call your doctor to find out more clinical information about you. The examination itself may be performed by a trained ultrasound technologist, by the radiologist or both. Because interpreting images is their medical specialty, unlike most other specialists, radiologists have special training in the technology and techniques of ultrasound to get the best examinations. They also can bring together all the available clinical and radiological information to come to a quick and correct diagnosis. We have separated ultrasound procedures into the most commonly prescibed categories and have given each of these their own page. To assist you in deciding where to look, the different types of ultrasound and the kinds of things they are used for are described below. A more complete description and pictures are included on the linked pages on this website.

Dr. Joseph Woo
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Site Index
he story of the development of ultrasound applications in medicine should probably start with the history of measuring distance under water using sound waves. The term SONAR refers to Sound Navigation and Ranging . Ultrasound scanners can be regarded as a form of 'medical' Sonar. As early as Jean-Daniel Colladon , a Swiss physicist, had successfully used an underwater bell to determine the speed of sound in the waters of Lake Geneva. In the later part of the 1800s, physicists were working towards defining the fundamental physics of sound vibrations (waves), transmission, propagation and refraction. One of them was Lord Rayleigh in England whose famous treatise " the Theory of Sound " published in first described sound wave as a mathematical equation, forming the basis of further theoretical work in acoustics. As for high frequency 'ultrasound', Lazzaro Spallanzani , an Italian biologist, could be credited for it's discovery when he demonstrated in the ability of bats navigating accurately in the dark was through echo reflection from high frequency inaudible sound. Very high frequency sound waves above the limit of human hearing were generated by English scientist

Real time three dimensional imaging (Real Time 3D Imaging is 4D Imaging) via Ellipsoidal Backprojection Allows true 4D Ultrasound, 4D Radar, and 4D Sonar (ie. 30 frame per second volumetric imaging of millions of voxels providing real time 3D ultrasound, real time 3D radar, real time 3D sonar). Overcomes the limitation of round trip travel time that constrains the image creation speed of focused beam imaging. Uses defocused wide angle ultra wideband transmitted pulses (optionally from synthesized very high intensity virtual point sources). Creates a real time, 30 f/s, very high resolution, very wide dynamic range, 3D image which is reconstructed via time domain techniques using a synthetic aperture. Uses sparse arrays, or very sparse arrays, with wideband or ultra wideband pulses. Obtains both dynamic transmit focusing and dynamic receive focusing with resulting higher resolution. Achieves very low sidelobe levels in all three dimensions. WEB SITE EXPANSION: The complete Design Manual is now available for viewing. Also Power Point presentations are now available for the I4D ultrasonic imaging machine, for Ellipsoidal Backprojection theory, and for active imaging analysis via ellipsoidal projections. Images of all published papers are now available. Power Point presentations have been edited. Contact information has been expanded. Web site change email notification has been included. Ultra-Wideband beam patterns and ultra-wideband beam forming simulation software (downloadable) has been added.

What is General Ultrasound Imaging?
Ultrasound (US) imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of high frequency sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. No ionizing radiation (x-ray) is involved in ultrasound imaging. Obstetric ultrasound refers to the specialized use of sound waves to visualize and thus determine the condition of a pregnant woman and her embryo or fetus. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs, including the heart, liver gallbladder spleen pancreas ... kidneys , and bladder. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs, and enable physicians to see blood flow and heart valve functions. This can help to diagnose a variety of heart conditions and to assess damage after a heart attack or other illness.
