UFO's As Modern Religion BY: Joel 'Cop' Furches Where did it all begin? Most people narrow the beginning of the modern rash of UFO sightings down to a day in 1947, on June 24. That day a man named Kenneth Arnold observed, from his private plane, nine disk-like, silver objects flying in formation over Mount Rainier, Washington. Describing them as "flying saucers" he started one of the biggest die-hard fads of this century: the UFO craze. It is interesting to note that the late 1930's/early 1940's heralded the beginning of the science fiction era. During that time several science fiction anthologies and books had been published, and science fiction magazines could be had for five to ten cents at any local drug store. Society had just begun to get used to the idea of rockets, ray guns, and little green men from Mars when Kenneth Arnold introduced flying saucers to the world. What resulted was a leap in UFO sightings. The increase in sightings itself was likely an example of mass illusion and fanaticism. The idea is not as far-fetched as it may seem. When Orson Wells did his legendary radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds," hundreds of people reacted in panic, honestly believing that aliens were invading them. Another pattern that has developed over the last fifty years is the number of "sightings" (just seeing a UFO) has gone down, and the number of abductions has gone up an enormous amount. This does tend to point to a unifying trend in the UFO craze. One might even use this as an argument to say that there are, indeed, extra-terrestrials trying to contact us, conquer us, or do whatever it is that ET's do. But it could also be used as an example of how UFO's are gaining the transcendental nature of a religion. Dr. Valee, a believer in extra-terrestrial life, uses UFO's as the explanation for the unifying idea of every religion of a superior being. He also believes that many of the Biblical Miracles, such as the parting of the Red Sea, are simply UFO phenomena.

After that first report, Arnold's description was shortened and it soon became popular to call all UFOs flying saucers.

Best known for his marionette sci-fi serials, such as Stingray, Fireball XL-5, Supercar, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet , Anderson was the media sci-fi creator for kids of that decade. Aside from the increasingly sophisticated puppetry of his "Supermarionation" technology, the Gerry Anderson hallmark was always cool, high-tech vehicles. In many ways, these were often the main characters of his series. As the sixties drew to a close, Anderson began to shift his focus from puppet actors to flesh and blood. Along with that was an increase in sophistication in order to appeal to an older audience (which made perfect sense, as the kids who were weaned on his puppet shows were growing up). His first live-action series was 1969's "UFO" . Set in the far future of 1980 (that's the 1980 where Beatle suits were in and we all drove turbine cars), the show centered around a secret international organization called SHADO, whose goal was to covertly combat an alien menace with its eyes on Earth. "UFO" was no exception to the Anderson hardware rule. If anything, it raised the bar to new heights. In its battle against extraterrestrial invaders, SHADO employed submarines, lunar interceptors, ground attack vehicles, orbital detection hardware, a moonbase, an underground HQ, and much more.
