Web posted at: 5:00 a.m. EST JARRELL, Texas (CNN) Tornadoes ravaged four central Texas counties from Waco to Austin on Tuesday, destroying an entire subdivision in Jarrell where at least 34 people died and scores more were hurt. Dozens of people were forced into makeshift shelters at Jarrell, a small town 40 miles north of Austin that was nearly wiped out by a tornado eight years ago. "We've got nothing left except piles of debris," said Richard Elliot, chief deputy sheriff for Williamson County. He said several people were missing.

In addition, one person was killed when a tornado destroyed two homes around Lake Travis, city spokesman Carlos Cordova told CNN. Williamson County Communications Director Geniva Simpson told CNN at least 32 people were killed in the Double Creek Estates subdivision in the northwest part of Jarrell.

Hearses trickled into Jarrell late Tuesday as rescue workers retrieved bodies from the rubble in the fading evening light. At least three of the town's residents were hospitalized in critical condition.

Tonight "Tech Live" catches up with some of these thrill-seekers. Martin Lisius is one of the world's premier storm chasers. He runs Tempest Tours , an Arlington, Texas-based company that will take you chasing severe weather. Lisius captured images of a violent tornado in 1998: Nearly a mile wide, it almost wiped Spencer, South Dakota, off the map, killing six people and injuring a third of the town's 320 residents. "That's the only tornado that I've intercepted in my life that was killing people at the time that I was viewing it," Lisius said.

The third version of the Site Assessment of Tornado Threat (SATT 3.0) software is now available.
1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Each year hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and approximately fifty to one hundred fatalities are caused by tornadoes, the most violent of all forms of atmospheric storms. In recent years, by means of Doppler radar, considerable success has been achieved in detecting tornadic storms, but such radar systems cannot determine when a tornado is actually in contact with the ground. As a result, the false alarm rate for tornados, based on the number of Tornado Warnings issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), is currently 80%. At the present time, actual sighting by storm spotters or other observers is the only accepted method for detecting when a tornado is on the ground. Based on the Seismic Detection of Tornadoes (SDT) concept, VorTek LLC possesses the capability to develop a series of networks in tornado-prone cities to remedy this situation by providing a longer-range, more reliable method of detecting tornados on the ground. VorTek was formed as an offshoot of Engineering Analysis Inc.

Preface
The following is a hodgepodge of thoughts and viewpoints related to tornadoes, hopefully more or less coherent ... an essay stimulated by recent events but combined with thoughts that have been brewing for awhile. It is a personal view that contains perspectives that some might find offensive enough to question its presence on my work Website, so in the interest of avoiding whatever controversies are associated with having it reside on the latter, here it is.
I. Historical Perspectives
When Europeans first came to the U.S., they began to encounter tornadoes, almost certainly for the first time in their lives. They were astounded by their ferocity and frequency here in North America. Pummeling their villages and farms without warning, they inflicted terrible death tolls. As settlers pushed west, they encountered tornadoes with higher frequency and at higher intensity than in the Eastern states, but of course the sparse populations offset that to some extent. With the slow but steady growth of populations at risk, by the early parts of the 20th century, tornadoes were exacting a substantial price from the largely agrarian Midwest.

Laws and Regulations
Tornadoes are nature's most violent storms posing the greatest severe weather threats to residents of Illinois. Most tornadoes produce rotating winds of 50 to 120 mph and move at speeds of about 30 to 40 mph although there have been tornadoes recorded in Illinois with winds of 200 mph moving at up to 70 mph. These strong rotating winds can easily destroy large buildings, turn small, normally harmless items into deadly missiles, and hurl people, animals, and even heavy machinery hundreds of yards. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause extensive damage in a short time. They can cause injuries and deaths, however most injuries and deaths from tornadoes are caused by flying debris carried along by the funnel. Since 1950 every county in Illinois has experienced tornadoes. In Illinois tornadoes can occur any time of the year, but the prime months are March, April, May, and June. The state averages 27 tornadoes each year.

*All images from March 27, 2004 have been added.* Text Update - 4/6/04: With only three chases into the year, 2004 has already proven to be successful despite a relatively slow start in terms of tornado climatology. March 27th proved to be the first day of the year with chaseable supercells and tornadoes, and Scott Blair and I were in west Oklahoma to meet the system. We observed and documented two supercells and the tornadoes they produced near Butler, Custer City, and Okarche. For now, the preliminary vid caps from the day are online . The chase account and still photos for the day will be added in the near future. The future pattern looks rather bleak, but perhaps a decent chase day or two will reveal itself as time progresses and severe weather season will begin in earnest before my chase vacation begins in mid-late June. We shall see, I suppose. Thanks for visiting my page and as always, feel free to e-mail me at
