Tornadoes in Kansas
Kansas is known for many things wheat, sunflowers ... and tornadoes! What famous story set in Kansas features a tornado? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, tells the story of Dorothy, who gets caught in a Kansas tornado and lands in the imaginary land of Oz. This story has been dramatized on stage and film. You might have seen the movie version, which stars Judy Garland as Dorothy. Tornadoes are storms with rapidly rotating winds that form a funnel cloud. Also known as "twisters," they extend downward from the huge clouds of a severe thunderstorm. The winds that rotate within a tornado usually reach a speed of almost 300 miles per hour! A tornado often sweeps through an area quickly, but it can cause considerable destruction. There have been a number of remarkable reports of tornadoes. In one instance, a schoolhouse was demolished while the 85 students originally inside it were carried more than 400 feet with none killed. There was also a case of five railway coaches, each weighing 70 tons, lifted from their tracks.

Tornadoes
The typical tornado first appears as a rotation in a huge thunder cloud, behind a shroud of heavy rain or hail. The sky turns green or yellow or black as night. Then it descends, a violently twisting funnel cloud. It rumbles like a jet, louder and louder, until the sound is deafening. Snaking erratically from southwest to northeast, the twister topples buildings, scatters debris and tosses cars as though they were toys. Gone minutes later, the tornado leaves a wake of destruction. In Canada, during an average year, 80 tornadoes cause two deaths and 20 injuries, plus tens of millions of dollars in property damage. These are the reported numbers - who knows how many more tornadoes strike unpopulated areas undetected. The averages are also deceiving because the majority of twisters do little more than bend TV antennae, break windows, uproot trees, or damage weak structures such as barns and sheds. With wind speeds of less than 160 km/h, and a path 100 m wide by 2 km long, these small tornadoes cause less than three percent of all deaths. The worst tornadoes are the most violent storms on earth. With winds approaching 500 km/h, they can level even the most solid structures. The path of destruction can reach 42 km long and 390 m wide. Fortunately, Canada has never seen such a storm.

Lesson Plan
Goal:
The student will understand how severe weather can effect our daily lives.
Instructional Objective:
The student will demonstrate understanding of the formation and destruction of a tornado and related safety precautions by completing a questionnaire and quiz with 80% accuracy.
National Science Education Standards

Content Standard D: As a result of their activities in grades K-4, all students should develop an understanding of changes in earth and sky. Changes In Earth and Sky Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons. Weather can be described by measurable quantities, such as temperature, wind direction and speed, and precipitation. Instructional Considerations: This is a 4th grade class of 10 girls and 10 boys, all of average intelligence. Children will be working in pairs in the computer lab. Children will be assessed through supervised and independent practice. Set: "Last class, we began a unit on Severe Weather and discussed tornadoes specifically. Today we are going to use our computers to research tornadoes to find out why they are considered severe weather and how we should respond to them. Encarta 97 Encyclopedia and the Internet will help us find the information we need."

Moreover, The Bew! Weatherchat will be a very useful tool if you are a storm chaser, because you can now discuss in real time with the other visitors of this site directly in the new chat section. Note that for compatibility reason, this section is in french. But you can go there and write in english if you want.
Nobody is on the chat when you go there? No problem, you also have access to the visitor board on the Weatherchat welcome page, (in french for the same reason than above) where you can leave as many messages as you want or read other messages!

Then we drive in this region and wait for storms to form. When they do, we target the most interesting thunderstorms, watching for any clues that it may be strengthening or weakening, and try to place our radars near the region where the tornadoes form."
