GLOSSARY ... ABOUT CHAPTER 7: Introduction to the Atmosphere (t). Thunderstorms and Tornadoes Thunderstorms Thunderstorms form when moist, unstable air is lifted vertically into the atmosphere. Lifting of this air results in condensation and the release of latent heat . The process to initiate vertical lifting can be caused by: (1). Unequal warming of the surface of the Earth. Orographic lifting due to topographic obstruction of air flow. (3). Dynamic lifting because of the presence of a frontal zone Immediately after lifting begins, the rising parcel of warm moist air begins to cool because of adiabatic expansion. At a certain elevation the dew point is reached resulting in condensation and the formation of a cumulus cloud. For the cumulus cloud to form into a thunderstorm, continued uplift must occur in an unstable atmosphere. With the vertical extension of the air parcel, the cumulus cloud grows into a cumulonimbus cloud.

BLUE ASH, Ohio (CNN) Powerful storms and tornadoes carved a path of destruction across the Midwest and Plains late Thursday and early Friday, destroying homes and other buildings and killing at least two people. The death toll could rise, however, as rescue workers assess the damage. "We're still trying to get people out from under buildings," said Richard Young of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department in Ohio. Young said he was aware of reports of three fatalities but could not confirm them. "Things are just such a mess right now that I don't know," he said.

[Reposted Nov. 15, 1996.]
Gorgons, Tornadoes, and Plasmoid Phenomena A few years ago, I found a wonderful book(1) that was written by Egon Bach about phenomena from volcanoes, vents, and even just the plain flat earth surface that he calls gorgons, after the ancient Greek name for god-monsters from volcanoes. He seems to have worked for many years to collect evidence and formulate his ideas. My plasmoid ideas are not much like his ideas though. Gorgons are a type of plasmoid. By learning about these plasmoids, one can learn about other types such as those produced in apparatus. I want to introduce this book and explain how these phenomena are identical to plasmoids and tornadoes since they behave like other plasmoids and even interconvert to them, and show application to understanding the "cold fusion" phenomena. Like tornadoes(7), some gorgons have been seen to be cylinders composed of disks stacked upon each other, and people have seen such sheer apart into many flying disks (p. 166). Recently, a video of a "white cylinder" that was a half mile long traveling very fast about 75000 feet over Colorado and that was apparently also photographed in another state a little later was featured on Paranormal Borderlines(8). It was luminous and rapidly exhibited a variety of changing colors and seems to have been layered or somewhat segmented. The object was videotaped very recently, perhaps a month ago. E. Bach reports information about other pictures or studies of similar objects. There actually are many reports of gorgons spouting out tornado-like funnels or funnels joining together with a gorgon. Large gorgons may convert to tornadoes (p. 71).

Spotting Tornadoes from Space
One year ago this week killer tornadoes raged across Oklahoma. Now, NASA scientists are figuring out how to predict such storms using lightning data from Earth-orbit.
May 1, 2000: April showers and May flowers indicate the arrival of spring, and with the season comes severe weather. Each spring we witness dramatic increases in the frequency and strength of storm systems, as evidenced by last year's tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. Scientists at NASA are developing instruments to understand and predict these intense storms with greater speed and precision.
During the afternoon and evening of May 3, 1999, a series of "supercell" thunderstorms produced large, destructive tornadoes concentrated in central Oklahoma. There were more than 70 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas with hail as large as 4.5 inches in diameter. The tornadoes killed more than 40 people and caused more than $1 billion in damage.

92. Introduction To Tornadoes
starts. Then, if other conditions are right, the thunderstorm may spinout one or more tornadoes. mph. tornadoes are also relatively small.
http://movies.warnerbros.com/twister/cmp/tornadointro.html
A tornado (from the Spanish "tronada", meaning thunderstorm) is a violently rotating column of air rising up into a cloud. A thunderstorm is the first step in the creation of a tornado. A thunderstorm happens when there is moisture in the atmosphere, a lifting force causing air to begin rising, and unstable air that will continue to rise once it starts. Then, if other conditions are right, the thunderstorm may spin out one or more tornadoes.
All thunderstorms are characterized by updrafts , rising air currents which supply the warm, humid air that fuels thunderstorms; sometimes, however, the column of rising air becomes a vortex a funnel cloud, or, if it reaches the ground, a tornado.
A tornado is often located at the edge of an updraft, next to air coming down from the thunderstorm with falling rain or hail. (This explains why a burst of heavy rain or hail sometimes announces a tornado's arrival.) As air rises from the ground in the tornado's vortex, a low pressure area is created near the ground. Air rushes to fill this area, causing additional damage to areas not directly hit by the tornado.
As air rushes into the vortex, its pressure lowers, cooling the air. This cooling condenses water vapor in the air into the tornado's familiar funnel-shaped cloud. As the swirling winds pick up dust, dirt, and debris from the ground, the funnel turns even darker. (Twisters that pick up little dirt can retain their white, cloud coloration, and some have taken on a red hue by picking up red dirt.)

Lancaster Elementary School, Bluffton, Indiana Introduction Tasks Process Resources ... Conclusion Introduction Indiana has a history of disastrous weather, particularly in the form of tornadoes. Each spring a path of killer tornadoes ranges from Texas up through the Hoosier state, a path known as Tornado Alley. How safe are we, in our at home and at school, and how well prepared for the next series of these wild weather phenoma? In this webquest your group of community activitists will investigate the history and power of tornadoes, look at our school's preparedness plan and publish a safety brochure for students, parents, and community members. Tasks Your tasks will be to investigate formation and occurrences of tornadoes. You will also look at the history of tornado activity in Indiana and present your findings in graph form. If you are able to make any predicitons from your data, you will do so. You will also identify the counties in Indiana with the most severe tornado history and rank Indiana compared to other states. You will investigate tornado safety for families - including myths about what to do in severe weather situations. You will publish your findings in a brochure designed for families and community members that will provide timely, accurate information on steps to take in the event of a tornado.

(CNN) In a blizzard, two feet of snow won't fall at your house while your neighbor gets a dusting. Hurricanes rarely pummel one part of town and totally skirt another, nor does an earthquake rattle one building and leave one next-door unshaken. But equality often flies out the window with tornadoes. Randomness is a key feature of twisters, in which 300 mph-plus winds might devastate one community but spare another nearby. Yet weather experts have become increasingly adept at understanding tornadoes, especially in the twister-prone swath of the Midwest known as Tornado Alley. Twenty years ago, warnings would only be issued if a "spotter" reported a twister touching down. But thanks to technology like Doppler radar, satellites, weather balloons, computer modeling and climatic and historical studies, authorities now can send out a cascading set of watches and warnings indicating when, where and how strong a tornado will strike.
