Questions and Answers About Tornadoes
  • Where do they come from?
Tornadoes come from the energy released in a thunderstorm. As powerful as they are, tornadoes account for only a tiny fraction of the energy in a thunderstorm. What makes them dangerous is that their energy is concentrated in a small area, perhaps only a hundred yards across. Not all tornadoes are the same, of course, and science does not yet completely understand how part of a thunderstorm's energy sometimes gets focused into something as small as a tornado (but see below).
  • Where do they occur?
Whenever and wherever conditions are right, tornadoes are possible, but they are most common in the central plains of North America, east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Appalachian Mountains. They occur mostly during the spring and summer; the tornado season comes early in the south and later in the north because spring comes later in the year as one moves northward. They usually occur during the late afternoon and early evening. However, they have been known to occur in every state in the United States, on any day of the year, and at any hour. They also occur in many other parts of the world, including Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America.
  • What type of damage can they do?

The Golden Tornadoes have a solid core of players returning from solid seasons in 2003. Most notably, senior Jon Crow will again be swinging a mighty stick for the Golden Tornadoes. Crow, a first team All-AMC North selection, hit .380 with 23 RBI last year. Crow will most likely be joined by Brian May in the middle of the year with a .392 batting average and a team best nine home runs and 39 RBI. May will see the majority of action behind the plate after spending the 2003 season at first base. Other returning players who will most likely contribute to the success of the 2004 Golden Tornadoes are Matt Nowaczynski, Matt Cornacchione, Brandon Harlan, Clay Sefter, Rob Janik and John Severn all of which made significant contributions last year. Many will say that Geneva will go as far as its pitching will take it. In 2004, the Golden Tornadoes have a solid mix of veterans and newcomers that have the potential to surprise a lot of teams. Dan Merrick, Brad Yates, Dwight Lambert, Jon Crow and John Drokin will all serve as moundsmen in 2004. In addition to a solid veteran group, Geneva will look to newcomers, Matt Colella, Chad Mraz, Rob Arata and Bryan Hawk to contribute in their first years with the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva has its sights set on its first American Mideast Conference and NAIA region 9 play-off appearance since joining the league in 1998. The Golden Tornadoes are playing in the tough AMC North with conference foes Malone, Walsh, Point Park, St. Vincent and Seton Hill. A top four finish would push Geneva into the post-season.

What Are Tornadoes? Tornadoes, or twisters as they are sometimes called, are nature's fiercest storms. Tornadoes are funnel-shaped wedged-shaped and rope-shaped and seem to appear from the bottoms of the huge thunderstorm clouds. Despite their small size when compared to other wind storms like hurricanes , tornadoes produce very strong winds. If they pass over populated areas they can cause huge amounts of damage to property and many death to animals and humans.

How Do Tornadoes Form? Exactly how tornadoes form is still not completely known. But after many years of study, meteorologists , scientists who study weather, do know some things for sure. Tornadoes can form as part of several different types of storms but they are produced inside powerful thunderstorms more than any other. Tornadoes form where warm, moist air and cold, dry air meet and begin to create updrafts that develop into massive rotating cumulonimbus clouds or supercells . Sometimes a spinning column of air called a vortex forms within these clouds. When this vortex becomes visible as a funnel cloud and reaches the ground, a tornado is created.

More material will be added, time permitting. The Tornado FAQ is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to tornadoes. Instead, it is a quick-reference summary of tornado knowledge, which will link you to more detailed information if you desire. Recent books from your local library or a major university library are still the deepest resource for learning about tornadoes and other severe storms; so if you are doing your own research or school reports, please visit the library in person. There are many good websites with tornado information also. Some of them are linked from the answers below. None of the links to outside websites implies any kind of commercial endorsement on the part of the author or SPC. The intent here is to direct you to the best tornado info available, regardless of whether the source is private, public or commercial. There is also a partial list of technical scientific references related to tornadoes for those with some meteorological education and training.

    What causes a tornado?
A tornado isn't likely to take you to Munchkinland, as it did in "The Wizard of Oz," but a strong one can destroy buildings and create a damage path a mile wide. Its wind speeds can top 300 miles per hour. Tornadoes occur just about everywhere in the world, from India to Australia, and all over the United States, but the most famous and active breeding ground for tornadoes is Tornado Alley. It extends from Texas up through Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska to the Dakotas. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico clashes with cold air from the north and fuels storms that form there. Tornadoes can form any time of year, but many occur in the stormy spring, when these warm and cold air masses collide. Storms often are triggered where two different kinds of air masses meet, such as dry and moist air masses, or cold and warm air masses. We don't know all the reasons a tornado forms, but scientists have a general idea of the weather ingredients that need to come together. Tornadoes can form out of many kinds of storms, but the type most likely to produce tornadoes is the

I was alerted to the storm by my young son who was playing outside and was scared and excited by the rapid churning/boiling effect of the clouds near where I took the photos. By the time I got outside I was amazed as I had never seen anything like it before so I went back inside to grab the camera. When I came back out I was lucky enough to capture the start and end of the twister. The whole event only lasted for about 5 minutes. At the point of contact, fully grown gum trees were uprooted like twigs and a ringlock fence with steel posts was flattened on the ground. The photos were taken on slide film with a 28-80 and 100-300 lens. Very few people in town actually saw the event and when I showed the slides at a Disaster Planning night, the only reason the people in attendance believed the pictures were taken at Merriwa was the Merriwa silos in the foreground. The really scary part was what would have been the impact if it had touched down in town about 4 kilometres away." These tornadoes were spawned by a cyclic supercell in the United States on the 29th May 2001. It produced 5 tornadoes including a large one probably with an intensity reaching at least F3 probably F4 (although this may be difficult to confirm). See
