When Thunderstorms Collide
What can happen when 2 thunderstorms join? A laminar, striated arcus cloud and some powerful fireworks! There is a lot of meteorology in this picture. Note how the cloud base of the storm at left is forced upward, parallel to and above the arcus cloud. The arcus condenses in moist air being smoothly lifted above outflow expelled by an unseen storm off to the right. The beauty of its double-plated, laminar (smooth) appearance belies the danger underneath from wind and lightning. Where the outflows from the two storms collide, in the background, new cells form fast, prolifically sparking from rapid charge separation within. Merging thunderstorm cells are also well-known producers of localized heavy rain and flash flood events, and occasionally severe gusts and hail. Approximately 100,000 thunderstorms occur in the United States each year. Approximately 10% of all thunderstorms are severe enough
http://www.flash.net/~nymaz/weather/lightnin.html
Interesting lightning facts:
Average Lightning Stroke is 6 miles long.
The Temperature of lightning's return stroke can reach 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The surface of the sun is not even that hot! (around 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit).
Average Thunderstorm is 6-10 miles wide.
Average Thunderstorm travels at a rate of 25 miles per hour.
Once the leading edge of a thunderstorm approaches to within 10 miles, you are at immediate risk due to the possibility of lightning strokes coming from overhanging anvil cloud. Because of this, many lightning deaths and injuries occur with clear skies directly overhead.
On average, thunder can only be heard over a distance of 3-4 miles, depending on humidity, terrain and other factors.
Approximately 100,000 thunderstorms occur in the United States each year. Approximately 10% of all thunderstorms are severe enough to produce high winds, flash floods, and tornadoes.
Thunderstorms cause an average of 200 deaths and 700 injuries in the United States each year.
Here's what NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has to say about lightning safety:
Stay indoors, and don't venture outside, unless absolutely necessary

Oscar's weather photography site Lightning activity of thunderstorms in relation to environmental and radar characteristics
    Oscar van der Velde
    Abstract Introduction
This is an abstract from my Master's thesis research, which I did at the KNMI (September 1999-April 2000).
My supervisors were Iwan Holleman and Herman Wessels (KNMI). The main objective of this study was to give insight into the temporal and spatial aspects of lightning activity during the life cycle of diverse types of thunderstorms, and to examine the possible relationships with thunderstorm environment and radar characteristics. The two radars from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) were used together with the SAFIR two-dimensional lightning mapping interferometer system. Synops and upper air soundings were used to examine thunderstorms and their lightning activity in their synoptic environment. The research questions were:
    • What are the general relationships between environment, type and radar characteristics of a thunderstorm and its lightning activity?
    • How does lightning activity evolve during a thunderstorm's life cycle and where in the storm does it occur?

    Thunderstorms, High Winds Hit Houston
    5 Drown In Storms Statewide
    UPDATED: 10:26 PM CDT May 1, 2004
HOUSTON A line of strong thunderstorms rolled through the Houston-area Saturday, bringing hail, violent winds and heavy downpours. Tomball and northwest Harris County were hardest hit when a tornado touched down. Roofs were ripped off buildings, awnings were torn, windows were broken and trees were uprooted from the high winds. The category F-1 twister damaged several businesses, including a Bank of America, near Highway 249 at FM 2920. The National Weather Service said thunderstorms packing 60 mph winds and golf ball-sized hail dumped 1 to 3 inches of rain across much of northern and coastal Texas Friday night and Saturday morning. Flood watches were in effect for more than half the state Saturday. In Polk County, a dam burst near the Crystal Lake Subdivision, by Highway 190. Approximately 100 homes and businesses were flooded, officials told News2Houston.

Thunderstorms scattered over Southeast, hot in Plains
Satellite image taken Monday at 9:45 p.m. EDT Story Tools (AP) Scattered thunderstorms formed across the Southeast on Monday afternoon, and temperatures in the low 90s spread as far north as the Dakotas. Thunderstorms developed along parts of the Gulf Coast around the middle of the day and spread quickly into parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Rainfall amounts by midday were mostly less than 0.70 of an inch. Earlier in the day, storms massed along the coasts of North and South Carolina before moving out to sea. High pressure dominating the central part of the nation pumped hot air northward across the Plains, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s and a few 90s as far north as Minnesota and South Dakota. The heat index, based on a combination of temperature and humidity, hit 111 by midday at Chandler, Oklahoma, with levels of 110 elsewhere in Oklahoma and in parts of Iowa, Nebraska and Arkansas. Along with the hot air, a few showers moved northward across parts of eastern Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota. A few showers also formed along the Rockies in Colorado and Wyoming.

Cars in some parts of south-east London were marooned Hundreds of people in London have been affected by flooding caused by freak thunderstorms.
Areas in south-east London bore the brunt of the torrential rains on Tuesday evening. More rain is predicted in London on Wednesday. In Dulwich cars were marooned in flooded roads and a number of streets are closed in the Streatham Hill and Brixton areas. Lightning struck a house in Stanmore, north-west London, causing a fire. Kings Cross station's Thameslink tunnel was closed and train services across London have been affected. The London Fire Brigade reported taking hundreds of flooding-related calls within just an hour and said they were still coming in "thick and fast". A Dulwich resident said: "The depth of the water on some of the roads was more than 1ft. On some cars, water was even lapping as high as the windscreen." Kent Fire and Rescue Service also received hundreds of flooding calls as they helped to deal with the situation in London.

Showers in parts of the East Coast, thunderstorms in Southwest
Satellite image taken at 6:32 p.m. EDT (AP) Showers fell on parts of the East Coast Tuesday while the southern Plains had more scorching temperatures and the Southwest had thunderstorms. The Northeast had fair skies but farther south, low pressure brought light rain showers to parts of North Carolina and Virginia. Showers and thunderstorms also moved across central Florida.
