Thunderstorms in Australia
E. Linacre and B. Geerts Thunderstorms in Australia are most common near the northwest coast (where more than 40 occur each year), central Queensland (with over 50/a), and on small patches of the highest parts of the Dividing Range along the east coast. They are fewest over the arid interior, with less than 10/a ( Fig 1 ). In the far north, thunderstorms are most common in the monsoon season (December-March). Along the east coast, the peak thunderstorm season shifts slightly towards late spring. In the southwest (Perth), thunderstorms are most common in winter. An estimated 5-10% of all Australian thunderstorms is severe. This fraction tends to be higher in the cold season and towards higher latitudes. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology defines a severe thunderstorm as one that produces heavy rain, hail, and/or damaging winds. Severe thunderstorms are associated with strong updrafts. An Australian parachutist became trapped in such an updraft for half an hour and was lifted from 2 km elevation to 4 km. He escaped by cutting himself free of the parachute and falling out of the cloud to about 500 m, and then opening his reserve parachute (4). Fig 1 . Showers scattered over West, Gulf Coast, thunderstorms in East
Satellite image taken Sunday at 5:15 p.m. EST Story Tools (AP) Showers spread across the West and along the Gulf Coast on Sunday, and a few thunderstorms shook parts of the East Coast. The National Weather Service posted a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of North Carolina, and a winter storm warning was issued for the mountains of southwestern and central Colorado. Strong low pressure spread clouds across much of the West. An area of showers stretched from southern Nevada across western and central Arizona, and scattered showers developed across California and some western sections of Oregon and Washington. Isolated, light showers also moved through parts of Idaho, western Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and western and central New Mexico. Snow showers were scattered at some high elevations of California, Oregon, Washington and western Montana, and snow also moved through parts of Utah into the mountains of western Colorado. In the East, a disturbance over the Carolinas produced scattered showers in parts of North Carolina, Virginia, eastern Maryland and Delaware. Hatteras, North Carolina, reported 2 inches of rain during the morning.

What is a Thunderstorm?

A thunderstorm is formed from a combination of moisture, rapidly rising warm air and a force capable of lifting air such as a warm and cold front, a sea breeze or a mountain. All thunderstorms contain lightning. Thunderstorms may occur singly, in clusters or in lines. Thus, it is possible for several thunderstorms to affect one location in the course of a few hours. Some of the most severe weather occurs when a single thunderstorm affects one location for an extended time. Some thunderstorms can be seen approaching, while others hit without warning. It is important to learn and recognize the danger signs and to plan ahead. Learn the thunderstorm danger signs. Dark, towering, or threatening clouds. Distant lightning and thunder. Because light travels much faster than sound, lightning flashes can be seen long before the resulting thunder is heard. Estimate the number of miles you are from a thunderstorm by counting the number of seconds between a flash of lightning and the next clap of thunder. Divide this number by five.

Thunderstorms cross Eastern Seaboard
Satellite image taken Saturday at 9:45 p.m. EDT Story Tools RELATED Intellicast University of Michigan National Weather Service (AP) A line of thunderstorms stretched from Louisiana to Maine on Saturday as a cold front pushed eastward, while Tropical Storm Erika continued to move inland over the southern tip of Texas. Thunderstorms north of the mid-Atlantic states brought dangerous lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Hailstones the size of quarters were reported in some areas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were also found in the Southeast and Tennessee Valley, with some producing flash flooding in Virginia and North Carolina. Erika made landfall in the early morning hours, but weakened during the day. Heavy showers and thunderstorms hit southern Texas, dropping over an inch of rainfall with wind gusts up to 70 mph. Fair weather covered the Plains, Midwest, Missouri Valley and Ozarks, with a summer haze sharply reducing visibility in parts of the northern Plains and western Great Lakes. Clear, dry conditions dominated the Northwest and the Southwest. A few scattered showers and thunderstorms were reported over the Great Basin and northern Rockies.

Acknowledgments Family Disaster Plan ... (PDF File of this Page) Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning , which kills more people each year than tornadoes . Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms. Thunderstorms affect relatively small areas when compared with hurricanes and winter storms. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 20 to 30 minutes. Of the estimated 100,000 thunderstorms that occur each year in the United States, only about 10 percent are classified as severe.
What Are Severe Thunderstorms, and What Causes Them?
The National Weather Service (NWS) considers a thunderstorm severe if it produces hail at least three-quarters of an inch in diameter, has winds of 58 miles per hour or higher, or produces a tornado. When a severe thunderstorm WARNING is issued, review what actions to take under a tornado warning or a flash flood warning.

http://www.steubencony.org/emo/thunderstorms.html
A Safety Tip from the
Steuben County
Office of Emergency Services “In Case of Thunderstorms” All thunderstorms whether they are severe or not...are dangerous. When one approaches protect yourself! Lightning is the thunderstorms worst killer. Do not use electrical appliances or the telephone while a thunderstorm is near. If you are outdoors...seek shelter in a sturdy building. Keep out of open areas. Stay away from tall objects such as isolated trees, and metal objects such as towers supporting power lines. Also stay away from wire fences, clotheslines, metal pipes, and rails. If in an automobile...do not touch metal parts or the exterior. Lightning may be about to strike if you are out in the open and feel your hair stand on end. Squat down with you feet together at once, bend forward and put your hands on your head. Do not lie flat on the ground! Stay out of water...if you are boating...head for shore at the first sign of threatening weather. In addition to the danger of lightening...gusty thunderstorm winds can easily capsize small boats. You should also stay away from places that could flood during a thunderstorm. Flash flooding caused by heavy downpours is another thunderstorm danger. Low-lying areas especially near streams and creeks can flood rapidly! Never drive your car into a flooded area! Especially if that area happens to be a flooded roadway...find an alternate route!

Airplanes and ground-based vehicles will probe intense Colorado thunderstorms in one of the nation's largest storm-related field programs this summer. The National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported project is aimed at documenting the interchange between thunderstorms and their environments. Entitled "Deep Convection and the Composition of the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere," the field program will take place in northeast Colorado during late June and July. It is one of three parts of STERAO, the Stratosphere-Troposphere Experiments: Radiation, Aerosols, and Ozone. STERAO is a multi-year study of the chemistry and dynamics of the upper troposphere (the atmosphere's lowest 15 kilometers, where our weather is shaped) and the lower stratosphere (the sensitive zone between 15 and 45 kilometers where the earth's protective ozone layer is found). "Water vapor and nitrogen are of particular interest in STERAO," says Cliff Jacobs, coordinator of NSF's lower atmospheric facilities section. "Thunderstorms bring vast amounts of water vapor from the lower to the upper troposphere, but the exact pathways are uncertain. Lightning is a significant source of active nitrogen, which can lead to the production of ozone, but the process is not yet fully understood."
