    Observing thunderstorms
  • Observing Thunderstorms: Identification Features
  • Observing typical cloud types associated with thunderstorms as they approach
  • Observing features of thunderstorms
  • Observing features of thunderstorms from the south ...
  • Supercell thunderstorms Most people are able to recognise thunderstorms from their typical characteristics of lightning and thunder. Thunderstorms are not 'objects' that move. They are 'atmospheric processing machines' consisting of updraughts which feed moisture and energy into the thunderstorm and downdraughts which emit the excess air back out of the thunderstorm. Inside the thunderstorm, the air flows and condenses under the appropriate conditions and rainfall as well as other forms of precipitation such as hail may be produced.
    Observing Thunderstorms: Identification Features
Identifying thunderstorms from observations in clear conditions is usually very easy. Thunderstorms are relatively large systems compared to other clouds. They contain a wispy white top projected forward into the line of direction of the winds and is called the anvil. Anvils resemble the features common to cirrostratus and cirrus. The tops of thunderstorms are also bright to brilliant white but are flattened and protrude outwards mainly along the anvil. The main section or body of cumulonimbus is the thickest section and exhibit bulging cumuliform features typical of tops of cumulus just like the shape of a cauliflower.

    Record cold follows thunderstorms
Satellite image at 10:32 a.m. EDT (AP) Temperatures dropped to record lows Monday from Iowa to New Jersey as cold air pushed southward behind a cold front that set off swarms of damaging thunderstorms. Thousands of customers lost electrical service on Sunday as the storms swept southward along a line that curved from the Plains to New England. Farther south, a separate area of stormy weather gave the Dallas-Fort Worth area nearly 4 inches of rain, a record for July 1. Dozens of residents were evacuated from apartments and numerous motorists were stranded when their cars stalled in flooded streets. After days of summer heat and humidity, thermometers measured record lows in the 30s and 40s Monday across parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York and New Jersey. In Michigan, Muskegon had its coldest July morning on record at 39 degrees, and South Bend, Indiana, had a July record of 42, the National Weather Service said. Lansing, Michigan, hit 38, toppling a record that had stood since 1895.

Why are there more thunderstorms during the summer?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service , approximately 1,800 thunderstorms are occurring at any given time, resulting in about 16-million thunderstorms each year. Most thunderstorms last about 30 minutes and are typically about 15 miles (24 km) in diameter. The two biggest threats associated with most thunderstorms are lightning and flash floods. To understand why thunderstorms occur more often during the warm months requires some understanding of thunderstorm basics. Thunderstorms thrive under certain conditions. The two most basic elements that cause a thunderstorm to develop are:
    • Moisture
    • Rapidly rising warm air
Because moisture and warmth are crucial to thunderstorms, it makes sense that they would occur more often in the spring and summer, particularly in humid areas such as the southeastern United States. The high humidity, in conjunction with warm temperatures, creates massive amounts of warm, moist air rising into the atmosphere, where it can easily form a thunderstorm.

Courtesy of Angie J Venturato It is late afternoon. The white puffy clouds that have been growing all day are replaced by a greenish sky. A distant rumble is heard...then another. It starts to rain . A flash of light streaks the sky, followed by a huge BOOM. Welcome to a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are one of the most thrilling and dangerous of weather phenomena . Over 40,000 thunderstorms occur throughout the world each day Thunderstorms can cause a lot of damage. Tornadoes can uproot trees and demolish buildings. Hail can damage cars and crops. Heavy rains can create flash floods. Lightning can spark a forest fire or hurt you. Safety during a thunderstorm is really important.

    Lightning on a Gust Front
Can high wind bend a channel of lightning? It appears to be happening in this images taken in western Oklahoma. Strong winds form a gust front into a shelf cloud along the leading edge of the storm. Storms with this configuration are usually fast movers with strong straight line winds. This cell was moving east at 60 MPH. The blue color is from the film, but I liked it so I left it. Want to learn more about the lightning and understand what's going on in these storms? Kids can learn more about lightning by visiting sources such as the National Geographic Page on lightning . Lightning extending from thunderstorms into space is a new area of study and may be observed in special situations involving very clear dark skies.
    Cloud to Ground Strikes
Cloud to ground lightning looks the best when it's out of the rain. Two types of lightning are in the first image. Lightning under the cloud base that on the edge of the rain and lightning coming out of the anvil striking outside the edge of the storm. Both are clear of the rain area and show good branching.
Using Lightning To Illuminate the Tornado
Lightning is common in a tornadic thunderstorm, but often after the tornado is on the ground the lightning diminishes. This was a lucky shot, well not total luck, I was there. It's really hard to do this, as I have tried for years. On numerous occasions I have had a tornado in the lightning and something goes wrong to keep me from getting it. One time I had two tornadoes going on simultaneously in the lightning east of Wichita, Kansas. I broke out of the storm too close to them and they just roared by as I was trying to get set up. For this shot I was on a little hand tripod setting on the car hood, which is fast to set up, and it wasn't raining so I could stand outside.

    Thunderstorms
Summer thunderstorms are a fairly common occurrence in most areas of Canada, providing much-needed precipitation for gardens, crops, and other purposes. Unfortunately, a small percentage of summer thunderstorms intensify to the extent that they become "severe", causing damage to property and threatening lives. Environment Canada will issue a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning if heavy rain, high winds, tornadoes, hail or intense lightning are present or expected. The storm's expected motion and developments are also provided in the weather warning. If you hear a weather warning and are in the area specified, take appropriate precautions.
    General Precautions
The following general precautions offer advice on how you can plan in advance to cope more safely with a severe thunderstorm.
    • Choose a shelter in advance. Good places to be during severe storms are basements, storm cellars, and fall-out shelters, or underneath stairs or sturdy furniture in the centre of the house. See
