Scientists peer under Titan's thick fog (CNN) Bright patches of methane have been detected swirling around the southern pole of Titan, settling a longstanding question as to whether Saturn's largest moon possesses clouds, according to a new study. The discovery was made with two large telescopes in Hawaii, using new adaptive optics to distinguish features on the haze-shrouded satellite that even a visiting spacecraft had missed. Titan, bigger than the planet Mercury, is the only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere, which has been compared to that covering our planet before life arose. "These clouds appear to be similar to summer thunderstorms on Earth, but formed of methane rather than water," said Antonin Bouchez of the California Institute of Technology, co-author of an article in the December 19 issue of the journal Nature.

Thunderstorms in U.S. rattle Great Lakes
The East was basking under high pressure early Tuesday, while the West baked in high temperatures and thunderstorms approached the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and Great Lakes. Mostly clear skies, along with cooler temperatures, were forecast for the Northeast, eastern Great Lakes, the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, and the mid-Atlantic states.

(AP) Showers and thunderstorms peppered the national weather map early Tuesday, and many of the storms were expected to keep their momentum throughout much of the day. In the East, a cold front was slowly rolling across the Great Lakes and Northeast, with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms on tap for the region. A high pressure system anchored off the eastern seaboard was expected to import warm and humid air, meaning rain across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, Mid-Atlantic, Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. An area of low pressure was slowly pushing across the northern Plains, meaning showers and thunderstorms all the way to the Upper Midwest. Some of those storms could become severe by afternoon. In the West, a strong upper level disturbance meant showers and thunderstorms as well. Snow showers were also possible in the higher terrain of the northern Rockies and the Pacific Northwest, with accumulations of up to 4 to 7 inches.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/soo/docu/supercell.htm
Supercell thunderstorms are perhaps the most violent of all thunderstorm types, and are capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and weak-to-violent tornadoes. They are most common during the spring across the central United States when moderate-to-strong atmospheric wind fields, vertical wind shear (change in wind direction and/or speed with height), and instability are present. The degree and vertical distribution of moisture, instability, lift, and especially wind shear have a profound influence on convective storm type, including supercells, multicells (including squall lines and bow echoes ), ordinary/pulse storms, or a combination of storm types. Once thunderstorms form, small/convective-scale interactions also influence storm type and evolution. There are variations of supercells, including "classic," "miniature," "high precipitation (HP)," and "low precipitation (LP)" storms. In general, however, the supercell class of storms is defined by a persistent rotating updraft (i.e., mesocyclone) which promotes storm organization, maintenance, and severity. More information concerning environmental conditions and the structure of classic and HP supercells is given below. WSR-88D Doppler radar imagery showing the evolution of some supercell events across Kentucky and south-central Indiana are available.

Thunderstorms
This page contains information reguarding thunderstorms and the hidden dangers involved in them.
Thunderstorms, which exist in cumulonimbus clouds, deserve special treatment from pilots for several reasons. Often, you may hear pilots on the radio referring to "towering cues to the south" or "several CBs to the west". They are talking about clouds which indicate severe weather.
Three elements must be present for thunderstorm development:
  • Warm air Moisture Unstable air mass
If all three of these elements are present, it takes very little to begin the processmerely some form of uplifting. Uplifting may be caused by several sources such as a frontal passage , the sun heating the ground and causing the warm air by the ground to rise, or even wind blowing up the side of a mountain.
Once this uplifting has begun, the warm moist air is carried upwards until the temperature surrounding the parcel of air drops below the dew point for that parcel of air. At that time, the moisture inside of the parcel of air will begin to condense out and form the fluffy cumulous clouds we're all familiar with seeing forming on sunny afternoons. As this moisture condenses, it releases latent heat and warms the air parcel more, causing more uplifting. Thus, the thunderstorm, which began as a typical cumulous cloud, continues to become larger and more buoyant. This stage of formation is known as the cumulous stage and is illustrated in the following picture.
The cumulous stage of thunderstorm formation.

Severe Thunderstorms A severe thunderstorm is any thunderstorm that has winds of at least 58 miles per hour or hail at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Winds in severe thunderstorms may produce damage as extensive as and similar to that of small tornadoes. Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe thunderstorms are possible in your area. Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A severe thunderstorm has been spotted. Take cover immediately! Flash Floods
Flash floods are the number one killer with nearly 140 fatalities every year. Walking or driving through flood waters is the most dangerous thing you can do. Flash Flood Watch: A flash flood watch means flooding is possible in your area. Flash Flood Warning: A warning means you may have only seconds to escape.
Lightning Safety
Lightning may hit the same place or the same person several times. Rubber soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. Avoid: Water, Metal, and the Highest Point; lightning is drawn to all three. If you are inside:
  • Keep away from windows and doors
  • Stay away from water faucets, sinks or tubs

The Hidden Life of Thunderstorms
Scientists are sending unmanned aircraft into electrical storms to learn more about their mysterious inner workings.
Listen to this story via streaming audio , a downloadable file , or get help October 30, 2003: There's much more to a thunderstorm than meets the eye. Literally. If you could see the invisible force fields around magnets and clothes that have "static cling," a storm on the horizon would look very different. Engulfing and dwarfing the storm clouds, ghostly ribbons of huge magnetic and electric fields would arch high above the thunder clouds to the top of the atmosphere, and would sprawl downward from the clouds like tendrils groping the landscape. These invisible fields are always in motion, swelling and contorting as the storm clouds churn, lurching suddenly as lightning bolts strike. Above: Thunderstorms are also huge electrical dynamos. Image courtesy The Aerospace Corporation. Scientists have long assumed that this mostly hidden side of thunderstorms serves as the electrical "pump" that maintains a huge difference in charge between the earth's surface and an upper layer of the atmosphere called the ionosphere. There's a voltage drop between the two, measuring somewhere between 150,000 and 600,000 volts. Left to itself, this difference should naturally balance out in about 15 minutes, but it doesn't.

What Makes a Severe Thunderstorm? Although every thunderstorm in Florida has the potential to cause death, injury or damage, about 10 % produce dangerous winds or hail that will likely exceed thresholds known to cause significant damage to well-built structures or cause bodily harm. These are known as severe thunderstorms.
