Bloom et al.'s Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain
Developed by: W. Huitt
Last Modified: July 2000 Overview of the Cognitive System Educational Psychology Interactive Beginning in 1948, a group of educators undertook the task of classifying education goals and objectives. The intent was to develop a classification system for three domains: the cognitive, the affective, and the psychomotor. Work on the cognitive domain was completed in 1956 and is commonly referred to as Bloom's Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain although the full title was Taxonomy of educational objectives: The classification of educational goals. Handbook I: Cognitive domain with the text having 4 other authors (M. Englehart, E. Furst, W. Hill, and D Krathwohl). The major idea of the taxonomy is that what educators want students to know (encompased in statements of educational objectives ) can be arranged in a hierarchy from less to more complex. The taxonomy is presented below with sample verbs and a sample behavior statement for each level. LEVEL DEFINITION SAMPLE

Controlled Vocabularies: A Glosso-Thesaurus

by Karl Fast, Fred Leise and Mike Steckel
In part 4 of the continuing series on controlled vocabularies and faceted classification, the authors present a glossary of terms to help cut through through the verbiage often found in this field. And this glossary is more than just a list of terms. The glossary is itself a controlled vocabulary.

Standardize your organization's business language
Wordmap allows an organization to consolidate its terminology and categories into a single enterprise taxonomy. The taxonomy ensures that all of the organization's applications use the same language to organize, store and present information. Through this discipline, Wordmap delivers:
  • greater speed and precision of information access reduced cost of information management and system set-up easier compliance with emerging regulatory demands.

BLOOM'S TAXONOMY
OfficePort Home OfficePort Educational Syllabus Threaded Reflection ... Study Hall In 1956, Benjamin Bloom headed a group of educational psychologists who developed a classification of levels of intellectual behavior important in learning. Bloom found that over 95 % of the test questions students encounter require them to think only at the lowest possible level...the recall of information. Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or recognition of facts, as the lowest level, through increasingly more complex and abstract mental levels, to the highest order which is classified as evaluation. Verb examples that represent intellectual activity on each level are listed here.
  • Knowledge : arrange, define, duplicate, label, list, memorize, name, order, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce state. Comprehension : classify, describe, discuss, explain, express, identify, indicate, locate, recognize, report, restate, review, select, translate, Application : apply, choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, practice, schedule, sketch, solve, use, write.

Ms. M. Hello! Welcome to my webpage. This page is being created to help my students and the members of the school club that I sponsor. The club is a Marine Science Club. I teach Biology and Marine Biology. While trying to get the members of my club prepared for the National Ocean Science Bowl, and having my students do a project on taxonomy, I found that it isn't simple to find full taxonomy without a lot of trouble. Thus was the beginning of this project.
I attempt to make information available for my students. Being a very small district (only one high school) and on the lower end of the financial scheme, any extra info. has to be donated. This is my donation. Hopefully this site will be of some value to others (not just my students).
I am rather new at making a wegpage, so please be patient with me. I will be updating this site daily. I would appreciate any feedback. Also, donations are always welcome to help the club make it to the National Ocean Science Bowl. If you would like to help out please click on the link below.
    Thank you for visiting

    Bloom's Taxonomy and Critical Thinking
Contributed by Barbara Fowler, Longview Community College. Bloom's Taxonomy divides the way people learn into three domains. One of these is the cognitive domain which emphasizes intellectual outcomes. This domain is further divided into categories or levels. The key words used and the type of questions asked may aid in the establishment and encouragement of critical thinking, especially in the higher levels. Level 1: Knowledge - exhibits previously learned material by recalling facts, terms, basic concepts and answers. Key words: who, what, why, when, omit, where, which, choose, find, how, define, label, show, spell, list, match, name, relate, tell, recall, select Questions: What is . . . ? How is . . . ? How did happen? How would you explain . . . ? Why did . . . ? How would you describe . . . ? When did . . . ? Can you recall . . . ? How would you show . . . ? Can you select . . . ? Who were the main . . . ? Can you list three . . . ? Which one . . . ? Who was . . . ?

Our mission is to assemble and share knowledge about nature in order to improve education, health, agriculture, economic development, and conservation throughout the world.
Discover Life helps you to identify things, share ways to teach and study nature's wonders, use maps, report your findings, and contribute to and learn from the Web's growing encyclopedia of life. The Polistes Foundation and its partners link tools and databases to the site. Our plan is to make identification guides and valuable information on a million species freely available to everyone. We invite you to join us in a quest to reduce disease, increase food production, stop destructive species, protect endangered ones, and enjoy rather than struggle with nature. John Pickering
