Complex atoms
The Bohr model of the atom strictly applies to the simplest possible atom - Hydrogen - consisting of one proton and one orbiting electron. What of more complex atoms with more protons and electrons? Although their detailed structure is quite involved due to the complicated interactions amongst the constituents, the ideas of quantum theory discussed so far, augmented by one further assumption called the Pauli Exclusion Principle , are surprisingly successful at explaining some qualitative features. We first discuss the general structure of the periodic table.

[ Home ] Milky Way Galaxy Solar System Humanity News Releases ... Comets Antimatter turns the Star Trek Dream into Reality Scientists have discovered that comets are natural sources of antimatter. The announcement was made at April 2002 joint meeting of American Physical Society and American Astronomical Society . Antimatter is a mirror image of matter. The update Periodic Table Elements has 109 matter and 109 antimatter elements. Each antimatter element’s nuclear, physical, and chemical properties have been defined to such an extent that people know almost as much about antimatter as matter. When matter and antimatter come together, energy is created according to Einstein's equation of mass times the speed of light squared or E = mc : the most efficient energy source in the universe. The picture of Halley's comet (center) shows dust particles blasting antimatter off the comet's surface. As comets approach the sun, comets develop a coma around the nucleus and tails that bend in the direction of the solar wind. The coma and tails are a plasma of matter and antimatter ions and dust particles. The matter and antimatter annihilations on the comet's surface, and in the plasma coma and tails produce light, x-rays and gamma-rays from rather than reflecting light from the sun. Antimatter from comets has collided with the Earth, Jupiter, and Sun. On June 30, 1908, a comet fragment collided with Earth's atmosphere over

What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice - that's what little girls are made of. What are little boys made of? Snips and snails and puppy dog tails - that's what little boys are made of. What is the earth made of? This is a question people have asked, and scientists have investigated, for thousands of years. Sometimes, even often, they have come up with puppy dog tail answers. But the story has developed slowly, then faster, then exponentially, until we have reached our present understanding of the nature of matter. Here is an outline of the history of that development.

If you have ever looked at a grid, you know that there are ROWS (left to right) and COLUMNS (up and down). The periodic table has rows and columns too and they each mean something different. When you look at the picture to the right you can see that the rows are different colors. Even though they skip some squares in between, all of the rows go left to right. When you look at a periodic table, each of the rows are considered to be different PERIODS (Get it? Like PERIODic table!). In the periodic table, elements have something in common if they are in the same row. All of the elements in a period have the same number of atomic SHELLS . We talk about shells when you go look at the elements in detail. Every element in the top row (the first period) has one shell for its electrons. All of the elements in the second row (the second period) have two shells for their electrons. It goes down the periodic table like that. At this time, the maximum number of shells is seven. Now you know about periods. The periodic table has a special name for its columns too. When a column goes from top to bottom, it's called a
