Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) HO ORGANIZED THE ALPHABET? We will never be able to attribute to a single individual the development of the basic building blocks of writing. Yet we do know the name of the man who devised the method of classifying the basic building blocks of matter. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born in Siberia in 1834. When Mendeleev became a professor of general chemistry at the University of St. Petersburg, he was unable to find an appropriate textbook and thus began writing his own. That textbook, written between 1868 and 1870, would provide a framework for modern chemical and physical theory. Mendeleev first trained as a teacher in the Pedagogic Institute of St. Petersburg before earning an advanced degree in chemistry in 1856.

This version of the Periodic table is based on that recommended by the Commission on the Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry and published in IUPAC Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Recommendations 1990. Atomic weights are quoted to five significant figures. For more precise values see the table of 2001 recommended values (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 1107-1122). The names of elements 104-109 were agreed in 1997 (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 2471-2473). For elements with no stable nuclides the mass of the longest-lived isotope has been quoted in brackets. However three such elements (Th, Pa, and U) do have a characteristic terrestrial isotopic composition, and for these an atomic weight is tabulated. The names for elements 110 to 114 are temporary and are based on the 1978 recommendations (see Pure Appl. Chem.

Definition
This length refers to the internuclear separation between the atoms in the element.
Units
pm
Notes
Most data are abstracted from reference 1 but some missing values are taken from the primary literature. Lengths do depend upon the allotrope, or form of the element, to some extent. Thus, the C-C length in graphite is 142.6 pm whereas the C-C length in diamond is 154.1 pm. While values are given for the Group 18 gases, these are separations, not bond lengths.
