MOVEMENT FOR BELOVED COMMUNITY
Sustainable Living
A common view of sustainability is from the United Nations- "Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Who could disagree? But, when it comes to actually changing the way we do things, the UN never challenges, but instead embraces economic globalism and growth oriented solutions. A different view is that of Jakob von Uexkull, the founder of the Right Livelihood Award, who said: "you cannot simultaneously empower the people and the multi-national companies, you cannot combine local self-reliance with the primacy of global 'free' trade. The major components of the present order- scientism, industrial developmentalism, and nation-statism- tolerate no other gods." Sustainability comes from the Latin Root meaning to "support from below." To sustain means to maintain, to supply with nourishment, and to support the vitality of something. According to the Context Institute "A community must be supported from below - by its inhabitants, present and future. Certain places, through the peculiar combination of physical, cultural, and, perhaps, spiritual characteristics, inspire people to care for their community. These are the places where sustainability has the best chance of taking hold."

WFEO, FEISEAP and Sustainable Development
This site provides a preview of access to resources relating to engineering and sustainable development The engineers of the world have gathered together in national engineering institutions, international engineering institutions, and in the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO). WFEO and its members have played a substantial part in establishment and support of sustainable development policies WFEO was established with the support of UNESCO in 1968. It now has a membership of some eighty national members and nine international members representing about 80% of the world's fifteen million engineers. In 1994 UNESCO invited WFEO to join forces with the Union of International Techological Associations (UATI) to form the International Council for Engineering and Technology (ICET), one of the twelve umbrella organisations formally associated with UNESCO. ICET and UNESCO have established a Framework Agreement which defines areas of common interest and modalities of co-operation. One of its the major programs is that to establish a World Virtual Library for Sustainable Development. (WVEL-SD) One of the principal international members of WFEO is the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South-East Asia and the Pacific (FEISEAP). It decided in 1996 to establish FEISEAP Net as a regional network for sustainable development. It was inaugurated on this site and was transferred to the management of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 1998. This site is now being used to develop approaches and demonstrate resources to be made available on the Australasian Virtual Engineering Library for Sustainable Development (AVEL-SD)

That’s why we’ve supported Industrial Evolution. As this report reveals, we’re backing new businesses in environmental technology and renewable energy; we’re helping to bring skills development and health improvements to our most deprived communities; and we’re the driving force behind the regeneration of the region and the reclamation of derelict land. For us, sustainable development is about much more than greening a region or bringing divided communities back together: it’s about balancing social, environmental and economic concerns in the sure knowledge that we can only achieve a better quality of life by thinking smarter and working together. The Bruntland Report (1987)
World Commission on Environment and Development (1987) Our Common Future ; OUP In 1987 the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development ( the Bruntland Commission) drew attention to the fact that economic development often leads to a deterioration, not an improvement, in the quality of people's lives. Just because it is new does not mean that it is better - or at least not for everybody! The Commission therefore called for a form of sustainable development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs There are two key issues as part of this: Development is not just about bigger profits and higher standards of living for a minority. It should be about making life better for everyone and

"Sustainable Development is Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is not a fixed state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development, and institutional change are made consistent with future as well as present needs." (Brundtland Report 1987)
Welcome to The Global Sustainability Institute at RMIT University (GS@RMIT) Website.
Global Sustainability will be the driving force changing the way we work and live in the 21st century.
Globalisation, revolutions in information and communications, environmental and community awareness and action are driving corporate and political leaders and citizens to address the future in very different ways.
GS@RMIT has been established to develop these concepts in practical ways so that they can be applied to the work of RMIT itself and to organizations in the private and public sectors.
The Institute is lead by longstanding public advocate on environmental and social issues, Tricia Caswell who is working with experts inside and outside RMIT, in Australia and overseas.

The UNESCO / WFEO Virtual Engineering Library for Sustainable Development (VELSD) is the name of a new web-based information network which is being established by the International Council for Engineering and Technology (ICET), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) The principal emphasis of the VELSD network will be to provide developing nations with improved access to resources that can assist in education in science, technology and engineering, at senior levels in schools and technical colleges and universities. The network will aim particularly to provide resources to teachers and lecturers, and will seek to meet the requirements identified within the developing countries. Each of the member nations of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and of the International Union of Technical Associations (UATI) , will be asked to become a supplier of material, or a user and definer of needs. The world wide network they establish will be a substantial aid to international sustainable development.

This website is part of a national initiative to implement ESD within the management of all Australian fisheries and aquaculture resources.  It is aimed at assisting fishery managers, the industry, environmental groups and the wider community in understanding:

Developing the new UK sustainable development strategy In 1999 the UK Government launched its Sustainable Development strategy a better quality of life . It envisaged a full review after five years. In Scotland , the Executive published Meeting the Needs... Priorities, Actions and Targets for Sustainable Development in April 2002. Together with the UK Government, Welsh Assembly Government, and the Northern Ireland Administration, we want to create a new UK strategic framework for sustainable development, to be in place by early 2005. This will provide the background for separate strategies and plans by each administration to take forward action. This is an opportunity to take a fresh look at the UK 's approach to sustainable development and to step up action, building on the good work that has already been done by government and others. It is also an opportunity to take into account new challenges, such as delivering on our commitments from the World Summit on Sustainable Development, within our wider approach to achieving sustainable development.

Local sustainability is about improving quality of life, where we live and work, whilst considering the needs of future generations. For those working on local sustainability within the IDeA that means two things. Firstly, we're here to help enthuse and motivate councils and their partners to keep sustainability at the top of the agenda and share their best practice with each other. Secondly, we will vigorously pursue the sustainability agenda at the IDeA by building capacity and empowering our colleagues to embrace best practice in their own areas of work. We will also work to ensure that the IDeA's office practices and functions are based upon sustainability principles.
