83. Sustainable Measures - What Is Sustainability, Anyway?
sustainable development, sustainable community, sustainable industry, sustainable agriculture different ways, but what does sustainability really mean
http://www.sustainablemeasures.com/Sustainability/
Sustainable development, sustainable community, sustainable industry, sustainable agriculture. You may have heard these words used in many different ways, but what does "sustainability" really mean and how can you tell if your community is sustainable? Sustainability is related to the quality of life in a community whether the economic, social and environmental systems that make up the community are providing a healthy, productive, meaningful life for all community residents, present and future.
How has the quality of life in your community changed over the last 20 or 40 years?
  • How has your community changed economically?
    • Are there fewer or more good-paying jobs are people working more and earning less or are most people living well?
    • Is there more or less poverty and homelessness?
    • Is it easier or harder for people to find homes that they can afford?
  • How has your community changed socially?
    • Is there less or more crime?
    • Are people less or more willing to volunteer?
    • Are fewer or more people running for public office or working on community boards?
  • How has your community changed environmentally?

Hazel Henderson, Paradigms of Progress What are sustainability indicators? Indicators are quantified information which help to explain how things are changing over time. For many years, a limited number of key economic measures has been used to judge how the economy is performing - for example, output, the level of employment, the rate of inflation, the balance of payments, public sector borrowing, etc. These statistics give an overall picture but do not explain why particular trends are occurring, and do not necessarily reflect the situation of a particular industry, society or area. They do, however, provide policy-makers and the public reasonable indicators of changes in the economy, assisting economic policy decision making and allowing the public to judge for themselves how the economy is performing overall. Why do we need indicators?

By adopting sustainable practices, companies can gain competitive edge, increase their market share, and boost shareholder value. What's more, the growing demand for 'green' products has created major new markets in which sharp-eyed eco-entrepreneurs are reaping rewards. This site explains the strategies and tools that companies can draw on to translate an aspiration of sustainability into practical, effective solutions. Case studies from around the world are provided as an example of each measure. The site's six sections cover:
    • Current issues: briefings on specific sustainable development topics from a business perspective Strategies and tools: how to incorporate the principle of sustainability into everyday business activities, illustrated by real-life examples Markets: business opportunities arising from sustainable development Banking and investment: spotlight on how sustainable development is being approached by the financial services industry Working with NGOs: how businesses are forging working partnerships with lobby groups Training opportunities: how universities and professional training providers can help industry leaders incorporate sustainability into their business strategies

Andrei Illarionov should be grateful to his boss Vladimir Putin, who saved his ass from being burned to the third degree. And maybe some others should say thanks to Vladimir Putin as well.
Illarionov was right at one point: it takes dough to be sustainable. But being alone it is hard to make that money. Even when you own some 25% of the planets surface. Mr Illarionovs arguments not to ratify Kyoto because it would harm economical growth, thus limiting possibilities for a sustainable development, are therefore subject to dispute. An isolated Russia would find it very hard to maintain economical growth on its own.
Being member of the WTO on the other hand, surely would stimulate development. And being part of both WTO and the Kyoto Club would tremendously improve chances to sell the CO2 emission rights which Putin discovered as a secret treasure that was created by a crises in Russia's heavy industry, reducing emissions by some 30% since 1991, the anchor date for Kyoto.
Together these developments add up to a multi billion value that would be hard to equal the traditional way. But there is a bullet in the storehouse. Russia's economical growth will boost after these deals. As a result heavy industry soon will be back at production levels of a decade ago. As will be emission levels, if not part of the new money will be invested in clean technologies. Chances are that pollution will be worse than ever. Despite of Kyoto and thanks to the European Union, that itself will suffer big time from the results.

T his journal is about sustainable development , specifically the strategies and responsibilities that the United States government believes are critical if we are to fulfill the hopes for a decent life for the world's poorest people. The U.S. government believes that developed nations have a responsibility to provide the people of developing nations with the tools they need to seize the opportunities of the global economy opportunities that come from international aid, foreign investment, domestic capital, and trade. To use those tools effectively, however, developing nations need to adopt political, legal, and economic policies that make development successful. Too often vital resources, sometimes made available with the help of other nations, are lost to the developing countries. Roads that should make market access possible for agricultural entrepreneurs are not completed, succumbing to inadequate financial planning or the diversion of funding. An ambitious plan to provide potable water founders when a change of administration alters the political priorities that shape budget decisions. International development experts, too, must make better use of resources. Projects must be respectful of environmental interests and the realities of the market while not encumbering the developing nations with overwhelming debt.
