Surveying
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Surveying is the branch of engineering that is concerned with the accurate measurement and position of points on the Earth 's surface, and to the establishment of boundaries. It basically achieves this by measuring the relative horizontal and vertical position of points on the ground, aided by a theodolite or a similar optical instrument. Surveying has been an essential element in the development of the human environment for many centuries and it is a requirement in the planning and execution of nearly every form of construction . Its principal modern uses are in the fields of transportation building , apportionment of land, and communications Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Origins

Surveying can be traced back to the Egyptians , who, every year after the Nile River overflowed its banks and washed out farm boundaries, would fix new boundaries by surveying. The nearly perfect squareness and north–south orientation of the

The Auriga project
Computer Aided Cave Surveying
The Auriga project is about developing an electronic surveying tool to make cave surveying easier and less error-prone. Currently, the standard process is to measure heading and tilt with a sighting compass and clino, write the data down on some waterproof paper and enter the data into a surveying program at home.
There is lots of room for improvements here. The signting instruments are difficult to use in low light conditions and narrow passages. Writing the data down and reading them at home from a mud-smeared paper also introduces the possibility of mis-readings.
Auriga addresses all these problems:
  • inclination and heading measurements are made with an electronic sensor array data is stored electronically and can be checked still in the cave data can be exported to the surveying program at home
Hardware
I experimented for several years with various sensors and processor boards before I finally came up with this design:
  • Data processing, storage, visualisation and user interface: PalmPilot (I have an old PalmPilot Personal)

Surveying and Spatial Information Systems involves the measurement, analysis, management, storage and display of spatial data describing the Earth, its physical features and the built environment.
These data come from many sources, including Earth-orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information technology using computer software and hardware.
It has applications in all disciplines which depend on spatial data, including environmental studies, planning, engineering, navigation, geology, geophysics, oceanography, land development, land ownership and tourism. It is thus fundamental to all the geoscience disciplines that use spatially related data.
Everyday, results of the work of Surveyors and Spatial Information System Engineers are found around us, such as the legal security of property boundaries, the appropriate location of mobile telephone transmitters, the safe navigation of ships, and the protection of environmental resources.
When the questions - what is it, where is it, and how much is there - are asked, the Surveyors and Spatial Information Systems people provide the answers. All decisions that are made by planners, engineers and decision makers regarding the Earth, its environment and resources, initially require studies and analysis of models of the Earth in the form of maps, plans, Earth images and digital information.

Cave Surveying Group
You can now bookmark the Cave Surveying Group as www.bcra.org.uk/csg/ The UK-based Cave Surveying Group (CSG) was established in 1993. The Group is a forum for the discussion of everything "surveyesque" - techniques, data capture & processing, standards, survey archiving policy, instruments etc. The Group publishes a quarterly 16 page A4 newsletter called Compass Points (ISSN 1361-8962), and organises field meetings, and is involved in current re-surveying and cave-registry projects. Members of CSG have been involved in the development of a comprehensive software package for survey-processing and production. This is known as Survex, and this open-source software is available for free download from www.survex.com . Some CSG members are pursuing the setting up of a national (BCRA) standard for the processing of cave survey data, and the definition of a survey data processing language. Members are also involved in the re-surveying work currently being undertaken in the Three Counties System, and have held field meetings at Bull Pot Farm, Casterton Fell. We are dedicated to protecting the caves we visit, and are active in landowner relations, cave management, and cave conservation and restoration. We provide training for cavers of all experience levels and always encourage safe, low-impact caving. At the current time, we do not hold regularly scheduled meetings. We simply meet where and when we cave and party. Check the calendar for upcoming events. Our members share many outdoors-oriented interests and our activities are not limited to caving. We can also often be found hiking, rock climbing, canoeing/kayaking, biking, etc. In other words, any excuse to get outside and enjoy nature at its finest. We are a very laid back Grotto that prefers parties to politics and music to motions. If you are like-minded, please join us!
