Tintype of a surveyor and chainman with a vernier compass made by Levi Colton, taken around 1870. Catalog #1985.0181.01.
Introduction The surveying and geodetic instruments in the National Museum of American History reflect the importance of these activities in America since the first European colonists settled here some 400 years ago and turned the American landscape into property. With these instruments, and others of their ilk, Americans determined the limits of private and public lands, the paths of transport, and the boundaries of colonies, states, and nation. This site currently features a selection of over 300 museum objects relating to surveying and geodesy. You may access the collection in the following ways: Browse by Maker to view objects grouped by maker and to see selected biographies. Browse by Instrument to view objects grouped by type and to read generic descriptions.

SURVEYING
  • Do ONE of the following:
  • From a set point (stake, nail, etc.), measure a range line north 300 feet and south 300 feet. From the same point, measure a baseline east 300 feet and west 300 feet. From one or more points (stations) marked along the range and/or baseline, take compass readings to trees, shrubs, and rocks. Take measurements from the range or baseline to the located features. Make the measurements using instruments, methods, and accuracies consistent with current technology, as directed by your counselor. Find and mark the corners of a five-sided lot that has been laid out by your counselor to fit the land available. Set an instrument over each of the corners and record the angle turned between each line and the distance measured between each corner, as directed by your counselor. With the assistance of the counselor, compute the error of closure from the recorded notes. The error of closure must not be more than 5 feet. From the corners, take compass readings or turn angles to trees, shrubs, and rocks and measure to them. All measurements should be made using instruments, methods, and accuracies consistent with current technology, as directed by your counselor. From the field notes gathered for requirement 1, draw to scale a map of your survey (as directed by your counselor). Submit a neatly drawn copy.

    Index
Back to Off on a Tangent
Forward to A Few Final Words
Some people just do not know how to have fun. They think everything has to be useful. Luckily, the sine, cosine, and tangent functions do have a lot of real-world uses. Surveyors use the tangent function a lot. For example, they can use trigonometry to figure out the distance across rivers. We first set up a survey post directly across the river from some landmark (like a tree). Then we head downstream a distance that we can measure; in this case, 400 meters. That's the red horizontal line in the drawing. Now we take a sighting on the tree from downstream. That's the black line in the drawing. The surveying instruments will tell us what our sighting angle is. In this case, it's 31 degrees. We know from the previous page that the tangent of 31 degrees is equal to the length of the blue line divided by the length of the red line (400 meters). So, if we multiply the tangent of 31 degrees by 400 meters, we'll get the distance across the river. The tangent of 31 degrees is about 0.60. That means that the distance across the river is 0.6 times 400 meters, or 240 meters.

S ince the early 1920s, Tinklepaugh Suveying has completed more than 100,000 surveys while building a tradition for accuracy and quality. Our survey records have grown through the years from original hand-drawn record plats by H.M. Tinklepaugh to an unmatched database containing thousands of notes, surveys and plats throughout Central Florida. T oday, that tradition continues with experience and knowledge gained from its history combined with state-of-the-art surveying equipment directly linked to computer aided design and drafting systems. At Tinklepaugh, highly experienced registered professional land surveyors direct teams of field crews dispatched in a modern fleet of all-terrain vehicles. Whether for right-of-way, utility mapping, locating boundaries, or construction staking, the Tinklepaugh crews utilize the most current equipment and technology. A great many things have changed since H.M. Tinklepaugh surveyed Central Florida more than 80 years ago. What has not changed is Tinklepaugh Surveying's commitment to accuracy, dependability and cost consciousness.
