    http://www.tech.mtu.edu/TLS
Surveying is the science of measuring the physical features of the earth using specialized equipment and procedures to obtain highly accurate results. Surveyors perform boundary and engineering-related surveys to prepare maps, plots, and plans depicting topography. They also verify the locat ion of existing or planned surface or sub-surface features in relation to the existing survey control. Using high-precision optical and electromechanical instruments and global positioning data from satellites, surveyors are responsible for interpreting the information and formulating conclusions. To emphasize these technologies, the program is laboratory oriented, including an intensive, one-summer program covering many field procedures. Most states require licensing or registration of surveyors. The requirements vary but generally include the completion of a rigorous examination and a three- to eight-year apprenticeship with a registered surveyor. Michigan, along with several other states, requires candidates to have a bachelor's degree in surveying before taking the licensing examination. Michigan Tech's surveying program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ASAC/ABET) . It is one of only six such accredited programs nationwide. Professional organizations are promoting the "regional surveying school" concept, and Michigan Tech's program serves the upper Midwest.

    Treatment of Errors in Surveying
The errors that occur in surveying are no different to those that occur when making measurements in science or technology. They can be divided into two types: systematic errors which occur because of faulty calibration of instruments, or bad technique using them and random errors which occur because all instruments are limited in precision and no two readings can be exactly repeated. A further type of error often considered is the gross error, when the surveyor makes a silly mistake. These can be avoided by taking care at all stages of producing a survey, but usually can be recognised when plotting the survey by, for example, unusually large misclosures, reversed legs, the centre line drifts above ground, etc. I won't cover surveying methods and reduction of survey data here; the best overall guide is "Surveying Caves" [

    SURVEYING
  • Do ONE of the following:
  • From a set point (stake, nail, etc.), measure a range line north 300 feet and south 300 feet. From the same point, measure a baseline east 300 feet and west 300 feet. From one or more points (stations) marked along the range and/or baseline, take compass readings to trees, shrubs, and rocks. Take measurements from the range or baseline to the located features. Make the measurements using instruments, methods, and accuracies consistent with current technology, as directed by your counselor. Find and mark the corners of a five-sided lot that has been laid out by your counselor to fit the land available. Set an instrument over each of the corners and record the angle turned between each line and the distance measured between each corner, as directed by your counselor. With the assistance of the counselor, compute the error of closure from the recorded notes. The error of closure must not be more than 5 feet. From the corners, take compass readings or turn angles to trees, shrubs, and rocks and measure to them. All measurements should be made using instruments, methods, and accuracies consistent with current technology, as directed by your counselor. From the field notes gathered for requirement 1, draw to scale a map of your survey (as directed by your counselor). Submit a neatly drawn copy.
