How to block banner advertisements using squid
by Craig Sanders
UPDATE 1999-05-02
Added a NULLJS keyword (and accompanying do_nothing.js file) for blocking out unwanted javascript files from SCRIPT SRC="...url..." tags. Geocities and imgis seem to be the main culprits for crap like this at the moment.
UPDATE 1998-09-22
This (and the CLOSEME keyword for the redir file) has been included in the latest version of squid-redir.
UPDATE 1998-08-04
Please note that there is a much newer and better version of this script available. i've been using this "new" version for over a year...I just haven't got around to fixing up this page yet. One of these days i'll update this page properly to reflect the new version. In the meantime, you can view the README or download squid-redir.tar.gz (only 4KB). you can view the perl code and my latest redir rules file before you download. BTW, feel free to email me and give me any good banner blocking regexps you come up with. i don't want to set up any automated system for sharing regexps (that would be too easy to abuse), but i'm willing to share/swap redir files. An increasing number of web sites have advertising banners embedded in them. At first, these banners were fairly unobtrusive and didn't bother me much at all - in fact, every once in a while i'd see something i was actually interested in.

Ghost Town
It's a ghost town around here. I'm going to school part time and working part time, and I've neglected the site. Jimmysquid.com is certainly not dead, but I'm not sure how often I'm going to update for the time being. One week turned into two, and now I haven't posted anything in 2 months. I still have a backlog and I still take pictures, I just haven't processed them recently. Here's a literal Ghost Town : This immensely brave, and possibly insane woman rides her bike through the contaminated zone around Chernobyl and into a derelict town, frozen in Soviet 1986 by the radiation. It's an amazing look at the aftermath of this tragedy. Posted by Paul at 02:57 PM Comments (0) TrackBack (0)

Great Southern Fish ... Winter Recipes Squid can make a superb meal provided it is fresh and cooked correctly. Old overcooked squid can be chewier than bubble gum and more suitable for tyre retreads than the table. The secret is to catch it yourself or buy it from a reputable fish shop. Ask among your friends - it shouldn’t be too difficult to find someone who loves squid and can recommend a good fishing spot or shop! Plain Gorgeous Squid Rings (serves 4) This is great as a snack or an entree. 1 squid, cut into rings ½ cup of plain flour 2 eggs 1 cup dried breadcrumbs 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil Freshly ground black pepper (to taste) Method Place the flour in a plastic bag, add the squid rings and, holding the top of the bag tightly closed, shake the contents. Break the eggs into a small mixing bowl, add pepper and beat. Dust off the excess flour from the rings, dip them in the beaten egg and roll in breadcrumbs. Place them on a plate and refrigerate for 15 minutes (to set the breadcrumbs).

SQUID Magnetometer
The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) consists of two superconductors separated by thin insulating layers to form two parallel Josephson junctions . The device may be configured as a magnetometer to detect incredibly small magnetic fields small enough to measure the magnetic fields in living organisms. Squids have been used to measure the magnetic fields in mouse brains to test whether there might be enough magnetism to attribute their navigational ability to an internal compass. Threshold for SQUID: T Magnetic field of heart: T Magnetic field of brain: T The great sensitivity of the SQUID devices is associated with measuring changes in magnetic field associated with one flux quantum. One of the discoveries associated with Josephson junctions was tha flux is quantized in units If a constant biasing current is maintained in the SQUID device, the measured voltage oscillates with the changes in phase at the two junctions, which depends upon the change in the magnetic flux. Counting the oscillations allows you to evaluate the flux change which has occurred. Discussion of SQUID sensitivity A bit of history Index

Josephson Devices
Devices based upon the characteristics of a Josephson junction are valuable in high speed circuits. Josephson junctions can be designed to switch in times of a few picoseconds. Their low power dissipation makes them useful in high-density computer circuits where resistive heating limits the applicability of conventional switches.

I have just spent considerable time setting up a transparent web cache to reduce the latency we experience on our satellite link to the Internet (our minimum ping time is 800ms to the US!!). You can see the statistics of our hit rates here. This method uses wccp to intercept web requests exiting through a cisco router and is totally transparent to the rest of the network. I used a Pentium 133 with 64MB RAM and a 4GB disk, running RedHat 6.2. The procedure is not difficult, but the are lots of little 'gotchas' that catch you out - even if you have read the FAQ 500 times like I did. So many people helped me out, and so many other have asked how to do it since I succeeded that I am publishing a 'cookbook' of the method that worked for us. Hope it helps. Al Blake - 3rd October 2000. (alb@spc.int)
Cookbook for setting up transparent wccp caching using squid and a cisco access server:
  • Install RedHat 6.2 selecting the 'server' install setup. After completion check that network card has been discovered, configured and is working (ping something). Check dns is working.
