I was a casual collector of pre-1970 Lesney Matchbox cars. Now I'm probably a little more committed, but not over the edge (don't get my family's opinion of that, however...). I have two displays containing one of each of the roughly 250 different major die styles (according to Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia of Matchbox) of the 'Regular Wheel' Lesney and Moko 1-75 series from 1953-1969. I am not concerned with their 'investment value', so I do not look for mint-in-box models, just clean looking ones. Now I look for some of the other pre-1970 series (some of the MOY (Models of Yesteryear), Major Packs, King Size, etc.) or for the occasional 1-75 model to replace a not-so-clean one in my collection. I started with the 90+ 1967-1969 models from my childhood, then began augmenting the collection (the few missing from 1968, a few more to complete 1966-1968 group, adding the late 1968-1969 models, adding a few I just like, etc.). Now I'm hooked as an adult as I was as a kid - what fun!

Issue 83 Deploying the Squid proxy server on Linux Posted on Thursday, March 01, 2001 by Ian Spare Ian gives an example of the installation, configuration and maintenance of this multi-tentacled invertebrate proxy server. To provide Internet access for users in the SAS Institute Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), a number of proxy servers have been installed both at the country office level and centrally at SAS European Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. These servers run the Squid proxy server software; this software is available under the GNU general public license. In brief, Squid provides for caching and/or forwarding requests for internet objects such as the data available via HTTP, FTP and gopher protocols. Web browsers can then use the local Squid cache server as a proxy HTTP server, reducing access time as well as bandwidth consumption. Squid keeps these objects in RAM or on local disk. Squid servers can be installed in hierarchies to allow central servers to build large caches of data available for servers lower in the hierarchy.

"Weird" New Squid Species Discovered in Deep Sea Bijal P. Trivedi
National Geographic Today
December 20, 2001
Deep-sea submersibles have spotted and filmed a new type of squid in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. "We have never seen anything like it," says cephalopod biologist Michael Vecchione, of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., and an author of a report, "Worldwide Observations of Remarkable Deep-Sea Squids," that appears in the December 21 issue of the journal Science. "It just shows how little we know about life-forms in the deep sea." Squid are usually characterized by eight long arms and two modified shorter arms called tentacles. Underwater video from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's remotely operated vehicle Tiburon showing a new species of deep-sea squid at 11,090 feet (3,380 meters) depth. MBARI scientists encountered this 13-foot-long (four-meter-long) animal during geological studies off the island of Oahu in May 2001.

Last month fishermen in the icy Ross Sea encountered a deep-sea giant. Almost 20 feet (6 meters) long, with spiked tentacles and huge, protruding eyes, it was feeding on Patagonian toothfish caught on longlines set by the fishermen. The creature was hauled aboard and taken to New Zealand for analysis. This confirmed the encounter as the first live sighting of a colossal squid. Usually called Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, scientists who examined the Ross Sea specimen coined the term "colossal squid" to distinguish it from giant squid ( Architeuthis Read the full

Newsletter Get the Newsletter Print-Friendly Version A Look at Squid September 2001 by Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier Web Caching This month, I'd like to talk about a fun package that goes by the lovely name of Squid. I've always thought "squid" was a fun word, although restaurants are apparently ashamed of the tentacled delicacy and prefer to call it "calamari." If you haven't heard of Squid before, it's a package that handles proxy caching for Internet objects. Note that I didn't say "Web pages," because Squid can handle more than just HTML files. Squid can be used for a number of things, including saving bandwidth, handling traffic spikes, and caching sites that are occasionally unavailable. Squid can also be used for load balancing. Essentially, the first time Squid receives a request from a browser, it acts as an intermediary and passes the request on to the server. Squid then saves a copy of the object. If no other clients request the same object, you'll see no benefit. However, if multiple clients request the object before it expires from the cache, Squid can speed up transactions and save bandwidth. If you've ever needed a document from a slow site, say one located in another country, hosted on a slow connection, or both, you can see the benefit of having a document cached. The first request may be slower than molasses, but the next request for the same document will be much faster, and the originating server's load will be lightened.

Network Working Group A. McKenzie Request for Comments: 1018 BBN Labs August 1987 Some Comments on SQuID Status of this Memo This memo is a discussion of some of the ideas expressed in RFC-1016 on Source Quench. This memo introduces the distinction of the cause of congestion in a gateway between the effects of "Funneling" and "Mismatch". It is offered in the same spirit as RFC-1016 RFC- 1016 discusses two interrelated strategies; one for when to send a SQ, and a second for what to do when an SQ is received. There is also a discussion of some experiments, which deal almost exclusively with Mismatching congestion. (I understand that the simulation can generate multiple flows, but these simply further increase the degree of Mismatch; the flow under study is long-lived by design.) It seems to me that the strategy RFC- 1016 proposes for sending SQ's, based on queue length, may be appropriate for Funneling Congestion, but inappropriate for Mismatch congestion, as discussed below. The host behavior proposed in

More information:
A vulnerability was discovered in squid, an Internet object cache, whereby access control lists based on URLs could be bypassed ( CAN-2004-0189 ). Two other bugs were also fixed with patches squid-2.4.STABLE7-url_escape.patch (a buffer overrun which does not appear to be exploitable) and squid-2.4.STABLE7-url_port.patch (a potential denial of service). For the stable distribution (woody) these problems have been fixed in version 2.4.6-2woody2. For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in version 2.5.5-1. We recommend that you update your squid package.

Reporter: Nicky Johnston
JOHN HIGHFIELD: Australians scientists are today offering proof that global warming needs to be taken much more seriously by the Howard government and its friends in Washington.
You may recall the pictures of the giant squid found on a Tasmanian beach the other day.
That's relevant, because our scientists say the same rising sea temperatures which are causing changing weather patterns and have brought devastating drought to large areas of Australia are also turning the world's squid into much larger creatures, with huge appetites and fast breeding cycles.
The scientists say that they've found a 1 per cent increase in water temperature causes juvenile squid to double in size. In some parts of the world squid have already denuded vegetation and taken over ocean environments.
