Shape Queries Using Image Databases
Imagine that you have a large number of images and wish to select some of them which are similar to a certain image. You will need a content based image database system which accepts an image as its input and retrieves all images like that by using some image properties such as color, texture, shape and keywords. At the Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing in the 5* rated Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (one of only 5 UK departments to receive the highest research grading) at the University of Surrey , we have developed a system for Shape Queries Using Image Databases . SQUID is the first image database retrieval system we know of on the internet which allows users to submit shapes as query objects. The work has been carried out by Sadegh Abbasi , and has been supervised by Dr Farzin Mokhtarian , and by Professor Josef Kittler There are about 1100 images of marine creatures in our database. Each image shows one distinct species on a uniform background. Every image is processed to recover the boundary contour, which is then represented by three global shape parameters and the maxima of the curvature zero-crossing contours in its Curvature Scale Space image.

Madeira Squid Stew
(Caldeirada de Lulas a Madeirense)
This Portuguese stew from the Madeira Islands is robust, spicy, and wonderfully tender, with just a hint of Portugal's early age of exploration to India, the Far East, and the Americas. Also downright pretty to look atif you like the look of squid, that is. Serve hot as a meal to 6, with lots of bread, a green salad, and strong red wine.
  • 4 Tablespoons olive oil
  • onions , coarsely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • bell peppers (red, green, yellow, or any combination), cut in fine strips
  • 2 little hot peppers , chopped (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 fresh tomatoes (or 4-6 canned), peeled, seeded, and chopped
  • 2 lbs. squid , cleaned and sliced into 1/4" slices, leaving the tentacles in one piece if they're small enough (go to the squid hyperlink for instructions on cleaning fresh squidor buy frozen, pre-sliced squid if you're squeamish)
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 cups fish stock
  • potatoes , peeled and cut into a julienne
Garnish: chopped parsley In a large saucepan, heat the oil and saute the onions, garlic, and peppers for about 5 minutes. Blend in the curry powder and ginger and stir for a minute or two. Add the bay leaves, salt, and tomatoes, bring to a boil, then reduce to lowest heat and steam for 5 or more minutes. Add the squid, wine, and stock. Bring to a boil, then immediately reduce to lowest heat, cover, and gently simmer for 30 minutes. Only by very slow cooking will the squid be so tender. Add the potatoes, keeping the heat at a bare simmer, and cook until the potatoes are fork tenderabout 30 more minutes.

Squid stuff I've written or modified a few patches to make Squid work better or differently. Some will find their way into the official Squid, while others are just backported features from later versions to my current favorite version 2.2STABLE5. IE Refresh Workaround for 2.2STABLE5 A workaround to the infamous IE refresh issue. This patch takes into account that IE 5.5SP1 and above are fixed, and no longer need a workaround. It adds a new squid.conf directive called ie_refresh that is either on or off (defaults to off, which is the standard Squid behavior). IE Refresh Workaround for 2.4DEVEL This one will probably apply to all 2.3 and above Squid's, but I don't promise that. I don't deal with 2.3 at all, so haven't patched it. WCCP Backport to 2.2STABLE5 This patch applies cleanly, and does not interfere with the pristine source except where it is supposed to. The only other backport patch I've seen is messy and has several other undocumented patches applied. WCCP Module (ip_wccp) for Kernel 2.2.18 I turned the ip_wccp.c standalone file into a part of the kernel, so that one can configure it in a standard way for your kernel (i.e. when you 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig' you can select it from the menus). This makes it easy to compile the module correctly. Note, that while it will let you select "Y" (i.e. not a module, but part of the kernel), I seem to recall that it is not safe to do so. IP GRE patch for WCCP for kernel 2.4.8

Giant Squid Babies Captured
By Mark Schrope, Discovery News Myth of the Giant Squid: The Kraken. Technical Information: Parts of the Giant Squid ... (PHOTOS) Feb. 27 — For the first time ever, researchers have gotten a brief look at living babies of the deep sea's most elusive known creature — the giant squid. Though numerous groups have attempted the feat, an adult giant squid, Architeuthis dux , which can grow as long as a city bus, has never been seen alive, though countless dead ones have come up in fishing nets.
Steve O'Shea of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, in Wellington, decided to take a novel approach and hunt for baby, or juvenile giant squid. His team's efforts are chronicled in the upcoming documentary "Chasing Giants: On the Trail of the Giant Squid," which airs on the Discovery Channel March 11.

Giant squid washes up on beach
A squid measuring about 60 feet (18 meters) washed up on a Tasmanian beach over the weekend. HOBART, Tasmania Scientists in Australia are investigating what may be a new species of giant squid, after one of the deep sea creatures washed up on a Tasmanian beach over the weekend. The squid weighs up to 250 kilograms and, including tentacles, measured almost 18 meters (60 feet), the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported on Monday. Only two other specimens have been found on Tasmanian shores, in 1986 and 1991, the report said. Scientists at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery were studying the squid to determine if it was a new species after identifying several new features. "It's definitely of the giant squid group, which is exciting enough," the museum's senior curator of Zoology, David Pemberton said in the ABC report.

The Squid
Squid live in salt water. They eat fish, shrimp and other marine animals. When a squid finds a school of fish, it grabs one. The squid uses its arms to hold the fish near its mouth, then bites off chunks with its beak. Squids do not have external shells. Their mantles are easily seen on the outside of their bodies. Squid come in many sizes. They range from less than an inch to more than sixty feet. Squid can change color. They often change color when they are disturbed.
