The Squid is an invertebrate (animal without a backbone) that swims in the oceans. This mollusk is closely related to the octopus. Squid can change the color of their skin to mimic their environment and hide from predators. Squid are soft-bodied cephalopods . They move by squirting water from the mantle through the siphon, using a type of jet propulsion. When in danger, squid squirt a cloud of dark ink in order to confuse their attacker and allow the squid to escape. Squid reproduce by releasing eggs into the water. Some squid eggs are free-floating, others are attached to seaweed or to the ocean floor. Anatomy : Squid range from 1 to 60 ft (0.3 to 18 m) long. The biggest squid is the Giant Squid (Architeuthis) . Squid have a large mantle/head (with a large brain), eight arms with suckers, two longer feeding tentacles, a beak, a large head, two large eyes, and two hearts. Their large eyes are very similar in structure to people's eyes. They breathe using gills. Diet : Squid eat fish, crustaceans (like

The Giant Squid (Architeuthis) is one of the largest squids (and invertebrate , animal without a backbone). It swims the oceans at great depths. No one has ever seen a living Giant Squid. Only dead examples have been found. These soft-bodied cephalopods are fast-moving carnivores that catch prey with their tentacles, then poison it with a bite from beak-like jaws. They move by squirting water from the mantle through the siphon, a type of jet propulsion. The Giant Squid's only enemy is the sperm whale , who hunts it deep in the ocean. Anatomy : The largest-known Architeuthis was 57 feet (17.5 m) long. They have eight arms, two longer feeding tentacles, a beak, a large head, and two eyes, each the size of a basketball. They breathe using gills. Diet : Giant squid are fast-moving carnivores (meat-eaters) that catch prey (probably large marine creatures) with their two feeding tentacles, then hold the prey with the eight arms and bite it into small pieces using a parrot-like beak. The esophagus runs through the brain, so the food must be in small pieces before swallowing.

Giant Squid Babies Captured By Mark Schrope, Discovery News A Tiny Giant Squid Meet the Giant In Depth: In Search of Giant Squid Feb. 27 Though numerous groups have attempted the feat, an adult giant squid, Architeuthis dux , which can grow as long as a city bus, has never been seen alive, though countless dead ones have come up in fishing nets. Steve O'Shea of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, in Wellington, decided to take a novel approach and hunt for baby, or juvenile giant squid. His team's efforts are chronicled in the upcoming documentary "Chasing Giants: On the Trail of the Giant Squid," which airs on the Discovery Channel March 11.
When their search for juvenile giant squid began, they used trawl nets in what seemed the most logical place, the deep ocean. But they found only one squid and it died quickly. Then, the team mounted a new expedition early last year that focused on surface waters closer to New Zealand's shore. They hit a jackpot of 14 juvenile giant squid, some of which they were able to keep alive and observe in tanks onboard their ship. Unfortunately, all had died by the time the ship reached port, but DNA analyses proved that the animals were in fact baby giant squid.

Squid Internet Object Cache.
"Squid offers high performance proxy caching for Web clients, It supports FTP, Gopher, and HTTP requests. The cache software, available only in source, is more than an order of magnitude faster than the CERN httpd and other popular Internet caches, because it never needs to fork (except for FTP), is implemented with non-blocking I/O, keeps meta data and hot objects in VM, caches DNS lookups. Squid caches can be arranged hierarchically for an improvement in response times and a reduction in bandwith usage. Squid runs on all popular Unix platforms." Squid Homepage.

There is an OS/2 version of Squid 1.1.15 at hobbes.nmsu.edu , which is a little bit outdated. The most recent version of Squid is Squid 2, which has a lot of new features. Squid 2 was successfuly ported to OS/2 by Platon Fomichev . Here you can find OS/2-related FAQ and list of known bugs. Please visit Squid Homepage for OS-independent questions.

This manual is NOT a Squid tutorial. It does not, for example, take the reader through step-by-step details of Squid installation and configuration. The objective of this manual is to explain, in as much detail as possible, every configuration parameter available in Squid. As such, the reader is required to have prior knowledge of basic Squid installation and configuration. The details presented in this manual are in the nature of reference material.

  • Network
This section explains ALL the network address parameters relevant to a Squid installation. Generally speaking, a Squid instance will need to communicate with:
    • Local or remote web servers Other Cache servers Clients (desktop browsers or gateways)
Squid configuration needs to define the addresses (IP address + port) for every relevant server and gateway This section focuses on communication with clients and web servers. The next section will detail the parameters required for communication with other cache servers in the network. A quick note on inter-server communication. Squid listens for TCP or ICP communication on specific ports. It uses TCP to communicate with web servers and clients, and ICP to talk to other cache servers. For every such server (or client), Squid configuration needs to assign a unique port number over which Squid would send requests (TCP or ICP) and listen for responses. An IP address is simply the network address at which the server is running. In short, the complete address for any server-to-server communication is determined by an IP-address+port combination. The following network parameters are relevant to Squid configuration:

    ©WhaleTimes
    Size
Record breaker: Largest recorded giant squid was 18 meters long (59.5 feet). Its mantle was 5 meters (16.4 feet). It weighed 1 metric ton.
The average size of the giant squid is 6 to 13 meters (19.7 to 42.7 feet) That is total length. The mantle would be about 1 to 2.5 meters (3.2 to 8 feet). The average weight is estimated to be 50 to 300 kg (110 to 661 pounds)
    Where are they found?
Squid in the genus Architeuthi are found in: northern Atlantic , from Labrador to the Gulf of Mexico; northern Norway to the Azores; northern Pacific from the Bering Sea to the Sea of Japan: southern Japan, Hawaii and California. It is also found in the Southern Ocean.
    Highlights
Giant squid are the largest cephalopod (octopus, cuttlefish, squid) and the largest mollusk. Many people know that they are hunted by sperm whales. This is fascinating to most of us, because the giant squid can be as long as the sperm whale that is hunting it. Our imaginations can go wild imagining the fight between the two.
Adults are found deep in the ocean, 200 to 1,000 meters (700 to 3,300 feet) (These are called the "epipelagic" and "mesopelagic" zones). Also found at the bottom in the bathyal zone - which can be 4,000 meters (13,300 feet) deep.

Giant squid washes up on beach
A squid measuring about 60 feet (18 meters) washed up on a Tasmanian beach over the weekend. HOBART, Tasmania Scientists in Australia are investigating what may be a new species of giant squid, after one of the deep sea creatures washed up on a Tasmanian beach over the weekend. The squid weighs up to 250 kilograms and, including tentacles, measured almost 18 meters (60 feet), the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported on Monday. Only two other specimens have been found on Tasmanian shores, in 1986 and 1991, the report said. Scientists at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery were studying the squid to determine if it was a new species after identifying several new features. "It's definitely of the giant squid group, which is exciting enough," the museum's senior curator of Zoology, David Pemberton said in the ABC report.
