A short essay on the movie's special effects, with a blurb about the HAL/IBM dispute.
http://www.elstree.co.uk/2001.html
Produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick
Screenplay by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke
Stanley Kubrik died on 7th March 1999 at his home in Hertforshire, 666 days before the 1st January 2001. 2001 was released in 1968 and proved a landmark movie for its genre and generation. The fact that 2001 is not easily understood on its first viewing was a source of much additional box office returns as people went back again and again to watch it in the hope that it would make more sense the more that they saw it. 2001 was not an instant hit, but the audiences started rolling in as a result of word of mouth referrals. Young people in particular picked up on 2001 as more of a movie to be experienced even if not entirely understood, especially the psychedelic images in the "tunnel of light" towards the end of the film which were claimed to be the closest thing to an LSD trip without actually taking the drug. The visually stunning nature of the film has earned 2001 its place in cinema history. Much dialogue and a narrator were removed from the original script, Stanley Kubrick relying on his mastery of the visual language of film to tell the story. The original concept came from the Arthur C. Clarke short story "The Sentinel". Stanley Kubrick and Arthur.C.Clarke wrote the original screenplay for 2001:A Space Odyssey. Arthur C. Clarke went away to turn the screenplay into the 2001 novel, and when Stanley Kubrick began filming changed the shooting script, and in addition removed many entire scenes from the film in the editing. Editing was allegedly done in part on the QE2 on his way to the Hollywood Premier of 2001 (Stanley Kubrick will not travel by air).

The Dartmouth-Berkeley-Minnesota theory team has identified a number of mesoscale phenomena to be investigated as part of the GGS program. A broad range of techniques are implemented including ideal and reduced MHD, two fluid, hybrid, particle-in-cell and test particle simulations. Detailed comparison of simulations results with GGS satellite and ground based data will be undertaken.
NASA SECTP: Ultra Low Frequency Magnetospheric PHysics
William Lotko, P. I.
This synergistic research effort is exploring and advancing theoretical understanding of the causal agents, coupling, scale-interactions, and particle kinetics of magnetospheric and ionospheric variability in the ultra-low-frequency regime (time scales from 1 sec to 30 min). Magnetotail transients and oscillations (periods of 10-30 min), magnetospheric boundary and dayside merging transients and pulsations (1-10 min), geomagnetic cavity and field line eigenmodes (0.5-10 min), and auroral resonator/cavity dynamics (1-30 sec) are being investigated via:
  • Dynamic, global MHD simulation of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction

From NASDA to JAXA [5]
Flying to space and into the future from the world's most beautiful launch site.
The Tanegashima Space Center has a reputation as the most beautiful launch site in the world, and NASDA has been proud of this. NASDA felt that the reputation of its beauty reflected the feeling that "Japan can do more than we thought", because the role of a launch site should be basically satisfied only with high function and efficiency. We hope that NASDA, which was solely in charge of Japanese space development for 34 years since its establishment, is able to leave a brilliant footstep in history. NASDA has come to its end and has handed over the baton to JAXA. We will continue to strive for a bright future.

Net Search Space Empire IV DEVELOPER : Malfador Machinations PUBLISHER : None yet RELEASE DATE : April 2000 From mainstream publishers, that is. Malfador Machinations has been working the side streets and alleys of the marketplace, turning heads and catching disproportionate attention for their Space Empire series for some years, including winning a number of "best of's" despite their almost complete lack of publicity, marketing, or coverage. Nonetheless, they have remained one of those 'inside secrets' of the genre - a great set of games that few knew about. With Space Empires IV, they may have finally crested into the mass market. More of a evolutionary than revolutionary upgrade, SE4 leaves its predecessor SE3 far behind in many ways while still managing to cling to the core concepts that made SE3 such a great game. First, SE4 has the basic formula down pat as somewhere between MOO and VGAP/Stars!. There are (essentially) 3 main resources - minerals, organics, and radio actives. Plunder planets for these, use them to build planetary facilities, bases, and ships to conquer or colonize the next set of planets. The stellar systems are connected by warp points which can vary from large, fixed and stable warp point to small (limiting the size of ship that can pass through), unstable (flickering), or even one-way gates that will really screw up your expansion plans. Other races are also out there in the great beyond somewhere, waiting to be your friend or eat your colonists, you never really know which.

Office Space
(R) Peter: Ron Livingston Joanna: Jennifer Aniston Milton: Stephen Root Bill Lumbergh: Gary Cole Michael Bolton: David Herman Samir: Ajay Naidu Tom Smykowski: Richard Riehle Lawrence: Diedrich Bader Anne: Alexandra Wentworth Written and directed by Mike Judge, based on his ``Milton'' animated shorts. Running time: 90 minutes. Rated R (for language and brief sexuality). BY ROGER EBERT Mike Judge's ``Office Space'' is a comic cry of rage against the nightmare of modern office life. It has many of the same complaints as ``Dilbert'' and the movie ``Clockwatchers'' and, for that matter, the works of Kafka and the Book of Job. It is about work that crushes the spirit. Office cubicles are cells, supervisors are the wardens, and modern management theory is skewed to employ as many managers and as few workers as possible. As the movie opens, a cubicle slave named Peter (Ron Livingston) is being reminded by his smarmy supervisor (Gary Cole) that all reports now carry a cover sheet. ``Yes, I know,'' he says. ``I forgot. It was a silly mistake. It won't happen again.'' Before long another manager reminds him about the cover sheets. ``Yes, I know,'' he says. Then another manager. And another. Logic suggests that when more than one supervisor conveys the same trivial information, their jobs overlap, and all supervisors after the first one should be shredded.
