Solar Radiation Research Laboratory Providing solar radiation measurements for more than a decade Located on South Table Mountain in Golden, Colorado, the Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) has been gathering solar radiation and meteorological data since 1984. Researchers at SRRL use specialized instruments to provide the solar resource information necessary for renewable energy research and development. What is Solar radiation and how is it used? The Earth receives a vast amount of energy from the sun in the form of solar radiation. Renewable energy technologies harness the sun's energy to produce electricity, light and heat buildings and grow crops used as alternative fuels. The success of these technologies hinges on the amount of solar radiation available, which varies depending on climate, geography and atmospheric conditions. Solar radiation data helps determine which technologies are most appropriate at a given location. SRRL is one of the four longest running solar radiation monitoring stations in the U.S. Solar radiation data plays a vital role for policy makers and industry and scientific researchers who need precise resource information to maximize the efficiency and minimize the cost of the development and use of technologies that capture the sun's energy. Measuring Solar Radiation at SRRL SRRL collects data from 27 solar and meteorological instruments; contributes minute-by-minute data to the World Meteorological Organization's Baseline Surface Radiation Network; and performs annual calibrations of more than 200 pyranometers (instruments used to measure total solar irradiance on flat surfaces) and pyrheliometers (instruments used to measure the sun's direct radiant energy as received at Earth). At SRRL, researchers also help the utility industry select low-cost radiation measurement systems.
