F. E. Trainer University of New South Wales Figures commonly quoted on costs of generating energy from renewable sources can give the impression that it will be possible to switch to renewables as the foundation for the continuation of industrial societies with high material living standards. Although renewable energy must be the sole source in a sustainable society, major difficulties become evident when conversions, storage and supply for high latitudes are considered. It is concluded that renewable energy sources will not be able to sustain present rich world levels of energy use and that a sustainable world order must be based on acceptance of much lower per capita levels of energy use, much lower living standards and a zero growth economy. Commonly stated figures for the cost of energy produced from renewable sources are quite impressive. For example it is claimed that electricity can be generated from the wind at 6¢ per kilowatt hour (Diesendorf, 1992, p 7). Given that the cost of coal fired electricity in the late 1980s was in the region of 3.5¢ per kilowatt hour (ELCOM, 1991, p 35) such figures appear to show that renewable energy sources will soon be able to replace fossil fuel sources. However there are a number of factors casting a quite different light on the potential of renewable energy sources. This discussion is mainly concerned with solar energy although some reference to other renewable sources is included, and it is confined to the two energy forms most crucial for industrial conserver societies, electricity and liquid fuel.

The project consisted of three parts, and produced three reports: Renewable Energy Resource Assessment Plan The report on Phase I summarized the activities involved in creating the resource assessment plan, including determining constraints and requirements, identifying potential project sites, analyzing existing utility infrastructure, identifying existing monitoring sites, and screening potential sites. New solar and wind monitoring sites were recommended and instrumented for collection of additional data. Development of Renewable Energy Resource Supply Curves The Phase II report compiled cost and performance data on current and future renewable energy conversion systems, analyzed and reduced existing data on available resources, and presented the renewable energy resource supply curves which were developed. A computer model was developed to allow comparison of cost information on renewable resources with various alternatives.

High-Flux Solar Furnace ...concentrating sunlight for industrial applications On top of a high, barren mesa above Golden, Colorado, researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have achieved a world-record concentration of 50,000 suns at the High-Flux Solar Furnace. The heat generated at the facility can be used to process a variety of materials, providing a clean alternative to very costly laser furnaces or conventional furnaces that burn fossil fuels. In more than eight years of operation, NREL research with the High-Flux Solar Furnace has shown that concentrated sunlight can be used in manufacturing processes for the automotive, aerospace, defense and electronics industries. The solar furnace also has proved effective at decontaminating hazardous wastes. How the Solar Furnace Works The 10-kilowatt solar furnace has three principal components: a heliostat, a primary concentrator and a refractive secondary concentrator. The heliostat is a large (32 square meters) flat mirror that tracks the sun as it moves from east to west and reflects the sunlight onto the primary concentrator. The primary concentrator is made up of 25 curved mirror facets, each measuring roughly 0.5 square meters, that reflect the sunlight a second time and focus it at a target area inside the test building. The primary concentrator reduces the beam of sunlight to a 10-centimeter diameter and concentrates it to approximately 2,500 suns at the focal point. Special optical devices can be placed at the focus to significantly increase the concentration. Reflective secondary concentrators can deliver 20,000 suns; refractive secondary concentrators can achieve 50,000 suns.
