Solar Energy Energy from the Sun
The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar energy is the solar radiation that reaches the earth. Solar energy can be converted directly or indirectly into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity. The major drawbacks (problems, or issues to overcome) of solar energy are: (1) the intermittent and variable manner in which it arrives at the earth's surface and, (2) the large area required to collect it at a useful rate. Solar energy is used for heating water for domestic use, space heating of buildings, drying agricultural products, and generating electrical energy. In the 1830s, the British astronomer John Herschel used a solar collector box to cook food during an expedition to Africa. Now, people are trying to use the sun's energy for lots of things. Electric utilities are are trying photovoltaics, a process by which solar energy is converted directly to electricity. Electricity can be produced directly from solar energy using photovoltaic devices or indirectly from steam generators using solar thermal collectors to heat a working fluid. There were 15 solar electric generating units operating in the US at the end of 2002, with more on the way. Most of these are in California, though Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Virginia have them, too.

Our vision at GLOBAL SOLAR is to be the world leader in developing solar energy integrated systems utilizing thin-film photovoltaic technology Global Solar is helping to develop a solar array for Tucson Electric Power that will reach 4.6 MW in capacity by the end of 2004. Global Solar's lightweight and flexible Portable Power Pack has been field tested by the military. GLOBAL SOLAR has installed some of the world’s largest commercial solar power systems utilizing existing technology. We deliver powerful, innovative systems with unprecedented durability and versatility, creating entirely new markets for solar power Currently, GLOBAL SOLAR is in development of the manufacturing process for its thin-film, flexible photovoltaic material and modules. We have developed prototypes of transportable AC power systems and small solar charging systems for the United States Department of Defense for use in military field exercises. Successful performance in these harsh and unique applications is paving the way for future distribution to commercial and governmental customers throughout the world.

85. Solar Energy
Go back. solar energy. solar energy is the most readily available sourceof energy. It does not belong to anybody and is, therefore, free.
http://edugreen.teri.res.in/explore/renew/solar.htm
Explor e Play and learn Network Surf Go back S olar energy India receives solar energy equivalent to over 5000 trillion kWh/year, which is far more than the total energy consumption of the country. S olar energy is the most readily available source of energy. It does not belong to anybody and is, therefore, free. It is also the most important of the non-conventional sources of energy because it is non-polluting and, therefore, helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. Solar energy has been used since prehistoric times, but in a most primitive manner. Before 1970, some research and development was carried out in a few countries to exploit solar energy more efficiently, but most of this work remained mainly academic. After the dramatic rise in oil prices in the 1970s, several countries began to formulate extensive research and development programmes to exploit solar energy. When we hang out our clothes to dry in the sun, we use the energy of the sun. In the same way, solar panels absorb the energy of the sun to provide heat for cooking and for heating water. Such systems are available in the market and are being used in homes and factories. India is one of the few countries with long days and plenty of sunshine, especially in the Thar desert region. This zone, having abundant solar energy available, is suitable for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications. In areas with similar intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed. Solar thermal energy is being used in India for heating water for both industrial and domestic purposes. A 140 MW integrated solar power plant is to be set up in Jodhpur but the initial expense incurred is still very high.

    Procedures and Activity
    Introduction
  • What is solar energy? Why should we try to tap and use solar energy?
Discuss and find that energy from the sun is great because it does not pollute. Share the fact that most energy we use is fossil-related and costs a lot to harvest, can destroy the earth during harvesting, and is limited or exhaustible. Solar energy is limited only by cloud cover and the earth's rotation.

    100. Solar Power At Myeka Public School
Learn how solar energy has transformed a rural South African school.
    http://www.ecokids.ca/pub/fun_n_games/features/myeka/index.cfm
Topics Myeka is a rural community in South Africa. The community's school has about 800 students who range from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Although it is only 50 kilometres away from the city of Durban, Myeka has no telephone lines and no electricity. In 1996, a solar system was installed at the school and has had a huge impact on the students at Myeka. They now have computers, a television set, a VCR, an overhead projector, a photocopier and a satellite link to the Internet. This is a letter written by Sammatha Dlomo, a student in Grade 11 - describing how solar power has made a difference in her life. Solar energy has not only changed my school life, it has brightened up my future as well. I am sixteen years old and have lived in the rural area for the past fourteen years. In all these past years I used a candle stick to study and do my homework. Chalkboard has been the mainstay teaching aid at school. When a few solar panels were installed at school in 1996, I did not have even the faintest notion of how it was going to work.
