Soil Types
People describe soil types in all kinds of ways such as heavy, light, sandy, clay, loam, poor or good. Soil scientists describe soil types by how much sand, silt and clay are present. This is called texture . It is possible to change the texture by adding different things. Changing texture can help in providing the right conditions needed for plant growth. Sand is the largest particle in the soil. When you rub it, it feels rough. This is because it has sharp edges. Sand doesn't hold many nutrients. Silt is a soil particle whose size is between sand and clay. Silt feels smooth and powdery. When wet it feels smooth but not sticky. Clay is the smallest of particles. Clay is smooth when dry and sticky when wet. Soils high in clay content are called heavy soils. Clay also can hold a lot of nutrients, but doesn't let air and water through it well. Particle size has a lot to do with a soil's drainage and nutrient holding capacity. To better understand how big these three soil particles are, think of them like this. If a particle of sand were the size of a basketball, then silt would be the size of a baseball, and clay would be the size of a golf ball. Line them all up, and you can see how these particles compare in size.

Systematic Planning Site Summaries Resource Links ... FATE Home Welcome to the Field Analytic Technologies Encyclopedia (FATE) web site. This online encyclopedia is intended to provide information about technologies that can be used in the field to characterize contaminated media, monitor the progress of remedial efforts, and in some cases, for confirmation sampling and analysis for site close out. Information on the site is broken down into eight (8) main sections:
The sections are described in more detail below.
Technologies Technological advances over the past decade have created a whole new set of tools to improve site cleanup and long-term monitoring. Computerization, microfabrication, and biotechnology permit the development of analytical equipment that has capabilities that blur the distinction between "screening methods" and "definitive methods." In the next decade, technological advances are likely to alter that landscape even more dramatically. The various technologies presented on this web site are grouped into the following categories:
Information in this section is structured much like a typical encyclopedia, with standard categories of information provided for each technology class. However, throughout the narrative, we include hyperlinks to more detailed information, further explanations, diagrams, and additional supporting data should the reader be interested in learning more. We also have pulled information into the encyclopedia on past documented use, and vendors and their specific instruments from other sources.

The Earth Soil covers much of the land on Earth . It is made up of minerals (rock, sand, clay, silt), air, water, and organic (plant and animal) material. Types of Soil : There are many different types of soils, and each one has unique characteristics, like color, texture, structure, and mineral content. The depth of the soil also varies. The kind of soil in an area helps determines what type of plants can grow. There are 10 orders (types) of soil: alfisols, aridisols, entisols, histosols, inceptisols, mollisols, oxisols, spodosols, ultisols, and vertisols. A scientist who studies soil is called a pedologist. Soil Formation : Soil is formed slowly as rock (the parent material) erodes into tiny pieces near the Earth's surface. Organic matter decays and mixes with inorganic material (rock particles, minerals and water) to form soil.

Sustainable Agriculture Educational Project Homepage
First of all, why is there such an interest in sustainable agriculture? Eating food is necessary for survival, and most people desire maintaining a secure supply of food. Currently, the world's agricultural output exceeds the dietary needs of all humans on this planet. Widespread hunger in parts of the world are due mainly to the failure of political and economic systems to distribute the food. So if enough food is being currently produced in the world, what is all this concern about "sustainable agriculture?" The major concern is that while we may be able to feed the world today, future generations may not have adequate food production to satisfy their dietary needs. We know that some farming and land use techniques are not sustainable. For example, the Middle East used to be known as the "Fertile Crescent," but now much of that land is desert. Poor land use planning and unsustainable agricultural practices has lead to desertification and declining soil fertility in that region. Farmers and environmentalist alike are interested in creating cropping systems that have the potential to produce similar yields year after year with no decline in fertility. Creating a truely sustainable farming system is a very difficult task. Farmers must choose individually for themselves what methods are best for their own situation. Farmers must worry about maintaining soil fertility, stopping soil erosion, avoiding soil compaction, protecting their crops from pests, using adequate amounts of water, working within political systems, making a liveable wage, and creating a product that is safe to eat.

Ever heard of a "watershed"?
Despite the fact that we all live in a watershed , most of us don't know the actual meaning of the word. Put simply, a watershed is all the land that drains into a given body of water. This body of water can be a creek, pond, river or ocean. Generally speaking, the larger the body of water, the larger its watershed. The Chesapeake Bay watershed, for example, covers 64,000 square miles and drains from six states including 60 percent of Virginia. The map above depicts the Old Dominion's major river watersheds (there are 497 subwatersheds). One thing all of these watersheds have in common is people, and where you have people, you have land altering activity. When we alter land - to farm, to build, to landscape, for transportation - we must take care to make sure our land use changes aren't causing runoff pollution problems for either other people or plants and animals downstream that depend on clean, usable water. The technical term for this form of pollution is

Mass Gravity Retaining Structures
These days, gabions are box shaped cages of steel wire mesh. The units are filled with rocks and connected to one another to form monolithic mass gravity retaining structures.
The gabions can be easily configured in an infinite number of ways to suit the uniqueness of construction projects!
All soils, whether cohesive or granular, have poor resistance to tensile stresses. Therefore, under loads, soils are prone to movement and potentially failure. Instead of replacing these soils with more competent and expensive materials, it may be possible to reinforce the existing soil with products to enhance the load carrying capacity of that soil.

Erosion of the earth occurs when the shear force applied by water, ice or wind (or other external influence), exceeds the shear resistance of the surface it is in contact with.

Growing Beets in the Home Garden
HYG-1604-93
Pamela J. Bennett
Beets are popular in the home garden because they are relatively easy to grow and practically the whole plant can be eaten. Beets can be grown for their root qualities which include different shapes and sizes as well as red, yellow or white colors. The tops or greens, when young, are excellent in salads and when the plant is older, can be cooked. The greens are even more nutritious than the roots.
Climatic Requirements
Beets prefer a cooler climate although they are tolerant of heat. Temperatures of 60 to 65 F and bright sunny days are ideal for beet plant growth and development. They can withstand cold weather short of severe freezing, making them a good long-season crop.
Soils
Beets prefer loose, well-drained soils but will tolerate a wide range. Remove stones and debris since this will hinder growth. In high clay soils, add organic matter to improve soil structure and to help avoid crusting after rainfall. Beets also make an excellent raised bed crop since soils are generally less compacted and there is less foot traffic. Beets are also sensitive to soil acidity. A low soil pH results in stunted growth. They prefer a pH of 6.2 to 6.8 and will tolerate 6.0 to 7.5.
Fertilizers
Fertilizers and lime are best applied using soil test results as a guide. Arrangements for soil testing can be made through your local Extension office. A fertilizer with the analysis of 5-10-10 can be applied at the time of seeding and again when the plants are about three inches high.
