Conspiracy Theory
I'm sure the conspiracy theory folks will have something to say about this. What on Mars points out that we haven't had an update from Spirit and Opportunity for about a week now. Maybe it's the upcoming holiday in the U.S., maybe it's the fact that we're in extended mission mode...or maybe The Truth Is Out There... The Medium of Life
The online version of The San Diego Union-Tribune has prepared a study guide on water, life and Mars. It's a pretty good, far-ranging article that even touches on Europa and the possibility of life even further out. Posted by FredKiesche in Life on Mars Comments (1) TrackBack (0) Link
Olympus Mons Redux
We've posted this shot before, but it looked so nice I figured we should do it again. The Astronomy Picture of the Day site has this shot of the summit of Olympus Mons , courtesy of the Mars Express probe. Hmmm...maybe it's time for a new desktop picture!

The Twelve Soil Orders
Soil Taxonomy
In 1975, Soil Taxonomy was published by the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Survey Staff. This system for classifying soils has undergone numerous changes since that time, and the 2nd edition was published in 1999. Soil Taxonomy remains one of the most widely used soil classification systems in the world.
At the highest level, Soil Taxonomy places soils in one of 12 categories known as orders. We have put together a collection of information and images to illustrate the distribution, properties, ecological significance, and use of these 12 soil orders.
To view these resources, simply select a link from the list on the right.

Table 10. Common fertilizers and their characteristics Name Nutrient Physical Properties Comments Fertilizers used primarily as sources of nitrogen: Anhydrous Ammonia Compressed gas
High affinity for water
Pungent odour
Corrosive Must be placed at 4-6 in. depth. Hazardous (safety precautions are required). High pressure equipment required. Urea* Granular Applied prior to or after seeding. Much less corrosive than other nitrogen fertilizers. Avoid mixing with ammonium nitrate as attraction for moisture causes mixture to turn to slush. More subject to volatilization losses than ammonium nitrate when not incorporated in the soil. Volatilization losses are enhanced when urea is broadcast without incorporation under warm and windy conditions on alkaline, calcareous or drying soils. Nitrogen Solution
(UAN) Solution
50% of the nitrogen is in the urea form and 50% is in the ammonium nitrate form
contains 0.79 lb N/litre or 3.57 lb N/Imp gal.

The Soil Liquefaction web site was developed to provide general information for interested lay persons, and more detailed information for engineers. Visitors who are not familiar with soil liquefaction can find answer to typical questions below.
What
is soil liquefaction? When has soil liquefaction occurred in the past? Where does soil liquefaction commonly occur? Why does soil liquefaction occur? How can soil liquefaction hazards be reduced? Research - links to sites on soil liquefaction research. Links to sites with earthquake and soil liquefaction information. Content - an overview of the soil liquefaction web site.
The site is organized so that visitors can navigate by viewing the answers to each of these questions. Clicking on the blue dots will provide answers at a level that does not require a background in engineering. More detailed information, presented at a level that does require an engineering background, can be obtained by following the links labeled "More" at the end of each section. Most of the photos on the site can be viewed in a larger version by clicking on the photos.

Welcome to the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate!
The department is recognized as one of the premier departments around the country in soil and environmental sciences. The internationally prominent faculty are supported by excellent research facilities and contribute significantly to the scientific literature on soil and water resources sciences and climatology. The department's credibility is attested by the high level of research grants generated by the faculty. In addition, a large number of the faculty are on editorial boards or serve as editors of prominent scholarly journals. Our goal is to develop and disseminate knowledge on the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes taking place in the natural environment, and to apply this knowledge base to fulfill the potential of soil and water resources for producing food to sustain life, to preserve the quality of the environment, and to solve environmental problems.

    The National Soil DataBase (NSDB)
The NSDB is the set of computer readable files which contain soil, landscape, and climatic data for all of Canada. It serves as the national archive for land resources information that was collected by federal and provincial field surveys, or created by land data analysis projects. The NSDB includes GIS coverages at a variety of scales, and the characteristics of each named soil series. The principal types of NSDB data holdings (ordered by scale) are as follows.
National Ecological Framework (EcoZones, EcoRegions, and EcoDistricts)
    • intended for use at scales of 1:30 million to 1:1 million coverage includes the entire land mass of Canada polygons are nested groupings of Soil Landscapes of Canada polygons data is available from other federal and provincial agencies
Soil Map of Canada / Land Potential DataBase (LPDB)
    • scale of 1:5 million coverage includes the entire land mass of Canada originally produced in the early 1980s; much of this information is outdated and better data is available (

We know less about life in the earth under our feet than we do about the far side of the moon. Yet every plant and animal you can think of depends on this vast hidden ecosystem. Each shovel of soil holds more living things than all the human beings ever born. Lots of species are still waiting for scientists to identify and name them. This is a world where fungi lay traps for thread-like worms. Bacteria dine on toxic chemicals. The smaller the creature, the stranger are its habits. A primer on soil vapor extraction, its emission control technologies, and alternative remediation methods. Provided by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Davis to help inform communities located near contaminated sites.
    http://sve.ucdavis.edu
This site addresses Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) , a process used to draw chemicals in vapor form out of contaminated soil. Communities living near contaminated sites want information regarding potential for exposures to hazardous chemicals. Concerns such as emissions of dioxins and other potential byproducts from the treatment of off-gas from soil vapor extraction systems, as well as alternative technologies that can sometimes be used in place of SVE are also covered at this web site. Types of information that you will find on these pages: Conventional emission control technologies, such as thermal or catalytic oxidation Alternative vapor emission controls and alternatives to SVE treatment Check list of questions for communities to consider when faced with the possible need for SVE A FACT SHEET on SVE and links to additional sources of relevant information. Questions regarding the information contained on this page should be directed to: UCD/SVE web coordinator, D. Chang at chngprep@isun.ucdavis.edu
