Anthropological Forum is a journal of social anthropology and comparative sociology that specialises in Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Founded in 1963 by Ronald M. Berndt, Anthropological Forum has a distinguished publication history. The journal provides a forum for both established and innovative approaches to anthropological research, and welcomes manuscripts from both experienced researchers and young scholars seeking publication for the first time. Each issue has a special section devoted to contributions on applied anthropology. Claire Yang has been chosen as this year's award
recipient of the Vorsanger-Smith Scholar Award. The award is a gift from Barbara Vorsanger Smith, long-time senior officer in Duke Development, and her spouse, faculty emeritus, Joel Smith. The Award recognizes overall excellence in the graduate program, including in all areas of performance. Third, fourth, and fifth year graduate
students who have passed prelims are eligible for nomination by faculty members. The award consists of the honorary designation accompanying
Departmental support during the following academic year as the Vorsanger-Smith Scholar, and includes an additional grant for summer research costs.

Duster chaired the ASA Task Force on Race, and from 1996-98 he served as member, then chair, of the joint NIH/DOE advisory committee on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in the Human Genome Project (The ELSI Working Group). He is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Social Science Research Council, and served as chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. He is the former Director of the American Cultures Center and the Institute for the Study of Social Change, both at the University of California, Berkeley.
