Program Scope
The Labor Studies Program attracts students interested in how our lives are shaped by work and its results. Starting from the practical problems of work, workers and their organizations, labor students investigate the underlying economic, political, and cultural forces. Drawing on the full range of social science and other disciplines, students develop practical and analytical skills needed in working with labor, government, and other organizations in the labor field. Labor Studies courses combine broad perspectives with specific skills. Introductory courses provide a general knowledge about work, workers, and their organizations. Electives enable students to examine areas in greater depth. Individual and group research projects encourage students to develop skills through investigation of specific problems such as: obstacles to organizing among immigrant workers; labor management cooperation's impact on grievance-handling and collective bargaining; use of computer information systems in local union operations; corporate buyouts' effects on workers' job security; pressure of international competition on working and living standards domestically and abroad; and child care provision through union activity. In these and other problems, students are encouraged to do first-hand investigation by working directly with those involved.

The Anti-Chomsky Reader
Edited by Peter Collier and David Horowitz " The dust jacket of Hegemony or Survival , Noam Chomsky’s attack on U.S. foreign policy and the elites that supposedly control it, calls the author 'the world’s foremost intellectual activist.' Normally such a statement could be dismissed as publisher’s hyperbole, but this claim about Chomsky exists in an echo chamber of similar sentiments. According to the Chicago Tribune, Chomsky is 'the most cited living author' and ranks just below Plato and Sigmund Freud among the most cited authors of all time. While acknowledging that he is reviled in some quarters for his ferocious anti-Americanism and cavalier relationship with the factual record, a recent New Yorker profile calls Chomsky 'one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.'"

The Humanities and Social
Sciences at Caltech
Welcome to the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), one of Caltech's six academic units. Within HSS, the Humanities Faculty comprises elements of history, literature, philosophy, history of science, and various languages. The Social Science Faculty draws together an interdisciplinary group of scholars working across the fields of anthropology, economics, finance, law, political science, psychology, and neuroscience. Division News The Whitewashed History of Los Angeles: Los Angeles's booming rise out of the 1880s, roaring on through the 1920s and the coming of the Great Depression, is a historical marvel, writes Associate Professor of History Bill Deverell in his new book, Whitewashed Adobe: The Rise of Los Angeles and the Remaking of Its Mexican Past. But this growth was interwoven with the city's often troubled relationship with Mexicans and Mexican Americans. [18 May 2004] Camerer Brain Research in LA Times: MRI scans of the human brain are helping scientists understand the decision-making process and weigh the influence of impulses and emotions. This research, led by Colin Camerer, Axline Professor of Business Economics, was featured in an article in the May 2 issue of the Los Angeles Times Magazine. [3 May 2004]
