Linguistic Anthropology Laboratory
MDIA 13
Michicagoan Conference
Ties to Other Units The University of Michigan's linguistic anthropology subfield emphasizes the integration of social theory and analysis with the analysis of linguistic form. We are especially strong in our engagement with historical issues, such as processes of standardization in nation-building, the effects of colonialism on the territorial distribution and social hierarchies among languages, and the ways in which language and other semiotic systems are deployed to constitute particular kinds of publics. We emphasize ethnography—usually in international settings—as crucial to graduate training. Our core faculty (1) have training in formal linguistics; (2) integrate linguistic and social analysis in their own research; (3) have strong training—and ongoing research interests—in social-cultural anthropology, in social theory and in the history of anthropology; and (4) have ongoing ethnographic engagement. We are committed to a view of language and culture that refuses the commonplace divisions between "scientific" and "interpretative" methodologies and between "cultural" and "material" aspects of social life. Linguistic anthropologists—by training and conviction—draw on the insights from formal analysis and interpretive ethnography and so are interested in understanding the political economy of language in its fullest sense. Similarly we recognize that the bio-cognitive aspects of language interpenetrate the social-cultural aspects so as to make it impossible to exclude one or the other in principle.

    Social Organisation, Economy and Development
Stephen M. Lyon, University of Kent at Canterbury
From December 1998 to December 1999 I conducted doctoral research in social anthropology in a village in Northern Pakistan. I examined the relationship between social organisation, economy and development in an agricultural community. This website was designed with two goals in mind. Firstly, to make available some of the field data as it was being collected an experiment in 'open' ethnography. Secondly, to encourage users to comment on ongoing research offering alternate explanations or examples of their own experiences. A selection of users' comments is available. My doctoral thesis was approved in February, 2002. I have made a PDF version of my thesis available for downloading on this web site. Be forewarned, however, that it is a rather large file for downloading (800K). I would of course welcome any comments on the thesis or other matters relating to my research or Pakistan in general. Although I will continue to carry out research on Pakistan and will continue to use the web as a medium of dissemination, I do not have any plans to substantially alter this website. Now that I have made my thesis available I will leave this website 'as is' and start a new website to cover the next phase of my research. Thanks again to everyone who participated in this anthropological experiment/adventure!

and Anthropology and in the interdisciplinary area of Forensic Science The faculty and support staff for all three disciplines are housed in Suite 300 of Burleson Hall and may be reached by phone at:
Sociology offers training at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levals. There is a two-fold thrust in the Sociology program: the study of general sociological knowledge and the development of research skills. The application of social theories to various institutional areas, ranging from small groups to large organizations, is a major goal. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs have a strong research emphasis that includes developing research designs, collecting data, analyzing those data through student use of the computer, and presenting research results at professional meetings. Students are prepared for a variety of post-graduate situations: professional schools (law, medicine, social work) graduate education in the social sciences, and work in public, nonprofit, and corporate sectors. The Anthropology program offers courses in cultural anthropology with an emphasis on modernization development and the role of the health sciences; in human biology with an emphasis also in the health disciplines; in archaeology with emphases on civilizations of Central America, Greece, Israel, Mexico, and Texas; and in Forensic Sciences. The program offers a wide range of courses in preparation for professional careers in architecture, forensic medicine, public health, law and international business.
