A Narrative (1) is a symbol (2) , a medium which conveys a certain meaning and one that has its own symbolic structure. A symbolic anthropologist attempts to elucidate the major forms and meanings of the narratives and then to construct the underlying culture of the narratives. Anthropologists start with analysis of the narratives, moves inductively beyond to more general patterns. Often when these narratives are compared it is found that certain groups of narratives display common cultural patterns; from these narratives, the culture of the narrators can be generalized. The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social work offers both a major and minor in
sociology. The sociology program is oriented toward increasing the student's understanding of human society, the groups and institutions of which it is composed, and its impact on human beings. Sociology is a good major for students planning futures in such professions as public health, law, business, and politics. It provides an excellent foundation for students going on to graduate or professional school. Sociology provides many distinctive ways of looking at the world so as to generate new perspectives on problems. Finally, it offers a range of research techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of organizations in attaining their goals.
