    The www-jungle and a 'Netnograf'
The 27 years old German Markus Giesler is not only North America's presumably youngest professor in marketing but also gained some experience as an 'Netnograf': UNISPIEGEL writes that "just like an anthropologist enters the Amazon jungle, Giesler enters the World Wide Web. He classifies the cyber consumers into tribes and researches into their rituals and religions. ... He has observed the Napster community which bootlegs music titles from each other's hard disk. Giesler mocks that they go after the slogan of 'liberty for information', an interpretation of Marx' and Engel's 'abolishment of property'. But instead of some profane internet thiefs he discovered a www-community (or congregation?) who wants to 'cleanse itself from the evil of music consuming culture' through their deeds". in German

    113. Richard Wrangham On The Paula Gordon Show
Audio interview with the Professor of Biological anthropology at Harvard University. His book 'Demonic Males' popularized ideas he has developed in scholarly research focused on the influence of ecology on the evolution of primate social behavior.

The Paula Gordon Show Demons Among Us?
    Richard Wrangham
3:24 secs Out of almost 5,000 mammal species in the world, there are only two in which males live with their relatives in social groups and occasionally make trips into neighboring territories to stalk, hunt and kill members of neighboring groups. Chimpanzees are one. Humans are the other. And we are so closely related that a blood transfusion from one species to the other will save a life, if the blood types match. Dr. Richard Wrangham is a Harvard biological anthropologist who has spent almost 30 years studying chimpanzee cultures in the wild and comparing chimp cultures to human ones. He elaborates on what he’s found in Demonic Males, his general audience book, as well as Chimpanzee Cultures, which he edited with a group of internationally distinguished primatologists. Our violent primate nature, shared with chimpanzees, is bad news, especially when you add that both chimps and humans are extremely sensitive to imbalances of power.  Gangs of males either kind know perfectly well how vulnerable a stranded individual neighbor is. And regularly take advantage of the situation in murderous ways, as has now been repeatedly observed among chimps in the wild. It does not require an anthropologist to observe similar behavior in humans. But there’s good news, too, Dr. Wrangham is quick to point out. Both humans and chimpanzees are strategically very sensible species. We both can - and do - adapt our environments. We can avoid contexts in which violent behavior is likely. And evolution also offers us another model for how primates can behave: bonobos. These are apes who “make love not war.”

    really
In one of his philosophical short stories, Jorge Luis Borges reviews "a certain Chinese encyclopedia" which contains a list of the kinds of animals that exist: "(a) those belonging to the Emperor, (b) embalmed, (c) domesticated, (d) suckling pigs, (e) sirens, (f) strange, (g) stray dogs, (h) included in this classification, (i) terrified, (j) innumerable, (k) drawn with a very fine camel hair brush, (l) etcetera, (m) which have just broken the water jug, (n) which, from a distance, look like flies." Quoted approvingly by Foucault in his archaeology of knowledge, Borges' list makes fun of earnest attempts to classify natural things. If you want to know what kinds of animals exist, the answer depends on who makes the classification. But what about the least natural of natural things, then –humans? Do women, professors and people from Bergen exist? That depends on what one sees them with. A few years ago, the term "negro" was debated in the Norwegian press. The standard view among the ethnic Norwegians contributing to the discussion was that "there is no reason why we should not call people Negroes ( negre ) if that is what they are". Note the formulation "that is what they are". It is reminiscent of a widespread use of the term "really". And if one resists, suggesting alternative terms, such as Kenyan, student, man and so on, then one appears, in today's ideological climate, as a dangerous social constructivist (read: irresponsible relativist) or a spineless, politically correct opportunist.
