Certificate/Diploma Social Anthropology
Social anthropology is a subject that raises important questions about people, societies and cultures. Anthropologists traditionally focused on 'other' people in small-scale societies, examining their myths, rituals, kinship patterns, and political and economic systems. Today, cross-cultural perspectives enable us to gain a critical insight into both our own lives and the ways in which anthropologists see the world. On these courses you will explore global questions of power and resources as well as women's experiences, migration, the urban poor, religion and culture. We offer half-courses (eight meetings) as well as full courses (16 weeks) on a variety of topics. Have a look at the following courses; they will certainly help you change your world view. Aims We live in a world where cultural interaction is increasing. This social anthropology programme offers valuable insights for people working in, for example, health, education, development and policy-making. You will also have an opportunity to follow your own interests, especially on Course 3 where you can choose your own research project. We also offer a range of half-courses on current debates and issues.

SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY The anthropological perspective focuses on the region's interethnic dynamics as they unfold between peoples of Sámi, Norwegian and Finnish origins. It relates historical processes of mutual adaptations, as well as changing governmental policies, to the present manifestations of cultural variations and ethnic revitalisation. A central part of the presentation is devoted to the period of more than hundred years, from the middle of the last century to the middle of the present, when the Sámi people (as well as the Kvens) were subjected to a general policy of assimilation which alienated a large part of these peoples from their cultural heritage. The cultural and ethnic revitalisation now taking place signifies a major change in the ethnic relationship, from a minority position towards one of equity.
The anthropological contribution situates the region`s ethnic and cultural characteristics within the context of Norway's general national ethos of class and regional equality and questions its ability to conceptualise cultural pluralism as a premise for a diversified governmental structure. A milestone in the development towards governmental diversification is the establishment of the Saami Parliament (1989). The issue of indigenous rights for the Sámi population to parts of the region's resource base is at the fore of the Parliament's present concerns. This question also provokes tensions between Sámi and Norwegians as well as among Sámi which seemed to have been extinguished. The course provides background information of this situation.

The Anthro.Net database contains thousands of reviewed web sites and bibliographic references. On the World Wide Web there are an estimated 250,000 sites that have content relating to the subject matter of anthropology. Unfortunately an estimated four-fifths contain little useful information. There are tens of thousands of anthropology sites containing redundant links to other pages that are collections of redundant links. Anthro.Net queries a database of over 40,000 pages from reviewed web sites with anthropological content built by users' interests. The system collects the search terms submitted by its users and uses proprietary software to hunt down internet based journal articles, well developed topical sites and bibliographic references for anthropology, archaeology and the other social sciences. Anthro.Net uses a spider or robot program to check for outdated and dead links. The site contains dynamically generated news and anthropology features updated around the clock.
