The world which gave birth to human sciences has changed, in ways that the human sciences have long ceased to comprehend. The contours of objects (nation-states, cultures, religions, histories, identities, the institutions of politics) are shifting, and the ways we go about imagining and thinking about those objects are also in turmoil: the several international theoretical and political movements such as marxism, feminism, Pan-Islam, Pan-Africanism, Non-Alignment, Pan Indianism or Pan-Americanism have been both causes and expressions of this turmoil.
Yet, the contact between and through cultures, histories, religions and forms of secularity is immensely fertile ground, and one with which Cultural Dynamics seeks to both document and engage. What new concepts or forms of theory are necessary, then, for thinking culture in the 21st century? What are the distinct theoretical positions and possibilities that emerge from thinking through and across cultures, past and present? Cultural Dynamics proposes to provide a forum for reconceptualizing the human sciences by understanding how culture emerges as a site of theoretical debate and political contestation, and by tracking the ways in which theory works cross-cultures.

Judd conducted research in the north China countryside in the 1980s and 1990s, examining changes in rural social organization in the wake of the rural economic reform. Much of this work involved exploration of the reformulation of gender in the countryside, and this led to concentrated work on the contemporary women's movement. Since the 1980s, she has also been engaged in development work in China in connection with the Canadian International Development Agency, with a focus on gender analysis and gender and development work. Since 2002 she has been conducting research in west China on the social implications for rural sending communities of large-scale rural-urban migration. The focus of the current research is on women's networks and the gendered implications of this population shift. A complementary focus is on migration's effect on persons at risk (including the elderly, disabled, widowed, and orphaned) remaining in the countryside.

The Nature of the Area
1.1 Social Anthropology is concerned with the comparative study of human social and cultural life and is best characterised by the key features - ethnography, holism, comparison and theory - which are present in virtually all anthropological research. 1.3 Social Anthropology works with a creative tension between empirical particularity and attention to the broadest theoretical questions about what it means to be a human social agent. Its theory, method and analysis are mutually constitutive. The discipline is notable for its intense focus on fine-grained empirical detail. Its researchers achieve high levels of linguistic and cultural competence through long periods of fieldwork, complemented by ancillary sources of documentary information. Social anthropologists locate their evidence in as broad a context as possible, and the data they collect usually extend beyond the original focus of interest and specific research topic.

It is holistic in two senses: it is concerned with all humans at all times, and with all dimensions of humanity. Central to anthropology is the concept of culture, and the notion that human nature is culture; that our species has evolved a universal capacity to conceive of the world symbolically, to teach and learn such symbols socially, and to transform the world (and ourselves) based on such symbols.

The word culture comes from the Latin root colere, (to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor). In general it refers to human activity; different definitions of culture reflect different theories for understanding, or criteria for valuing, human activity.
