Particularly fond of Hostas and Delphiniums. Treatment - Treatments abound for slugs and snails so there's no choice of options to try. My own personal approach is to not grow anything that they like eating apart from Delphiniums because I love Delphiniums. When the new shoots are emerging in the spring I scatter mini slug pellets around them and stop when the leaves are large enough to be less tasty to the slugs.

It's always fascinating to read about how makeshift markets always find ways of emerging, even in the unlikeliest of places. On April 21, for example, this site featured a piece by Pete Geddes , which explained how markets and entrepreneurship took root in, of all places, German POW camps in WWII - with chocolate and cigarettes as currency. Geddes also told of how open-air auctions became prevalent in our most recent war with Iraq, due to thinning supply lines and a shortage of cigarettes.
Here in Washington, D.C., we have another unique example of how two parties, each possessing something the other wants, have spontaneously found a way to help one another. What's especially fun in this example is that both parties are using one another to circumvent subsidized carpooling, a silly attempt at environmentally friendly behavior modification otherwise known as "green" or "HOV (High-occupancy vehicle)" lanes.

PHOTOS: Bill Rudman. Two quite different groups of sea slugs have evolved ways of using the ability of plants to convert the sun's energy into sugars and other nutrients. In simple terms they have become "solar powered".
The herbivorous sacoglossans are suctorial feeders removing the cell sap from the algae on which they feed. In most, the cell contents are simply digested by the slug. Some species however have evolved branches of their gut which ramify throughout the body wall and contain plastids, which are the photosynthesising "factories" from the algae, alive and operating. In many cases these plastids are chloroplasts, but sacoglossans that feed on red and brown algae are also reported to keep the plastids from these algae alive as well. As I show elsewhere in the Forum, one species, Elysia cf furvacauda changes diet and plastid at least three times during its life history.

Image courtesy Eric Kandel, Columbia University. Researchers studying how memories are made have discovered a protein that is critical to the process. They have also found that the protein works in an unusual way that may help neurons store memories for days or even weeks. The protein changes its shape in a way similar to the prion protein that has been linked to mad cow disease. But unlike the prion protein, which in its altered state causes brain disease in cows, sheep, and humans, the newly discovered protein does a good thing, by helping nerve cells connect to each other. Eric Kandel and his coworkers at Columbia University in New York City use a sea slug species known as Aplysia to study memory. The ugly slug uses a relatively simple system of neurons to remember certain stimuli and react to them. For example, the slugs can remember being pinched in the gill, and they learn to react by withdrawing the gill. Most neurons contain thousands of projections that connect to other neurons in an intricate system, much like a network of interconnected wires. To make sure a signal gets from point A to point B, electrical signals must flow through the right set of wires.

TREAT OUTDOORS WITH Nema slug NOW!!! TREAT OUTDOORS WITH Nema slug NOW!!! Slugs are one of the most common pests in the garden attacking the soft foliage of herbaceous, bedding and vegetable plants as well as the roots of the plants in some cases. They can also be a problem under glass and in cold frames at the start of the season, with young seedlings being particularly vulnerable. The biological control of slugs using nematodes ( Nema slug ) is effective and safe - for children, pets and wildlife. The No1. solution for slugs in the soil. Nema slug kills slugs both above and below ground. Slugs feed on the foliage, flowers, stems and roots of the plants. They leave ragged holes in the leaves or in the case of younger plants these can be totally destroyed. Slugs have several characteristics in common - They are covered in a watery mucus - which leaves a "slime trail" and they require water for reproduction. Slugs are able to breed throughout the year, laying huge numbers of eggs, except in periods of frost or drought but are most numerous and do the most damage in warm damp Springs and Autumns.

by Wendy Priesnitz Keeping plants healthy in an organic garden involves avoidance techniques like creating a garden environment that encourages plants to grow while discouraging pests and diseases. Inevitably some problems will still arise unless specific action is taken. The common slug is too common a pest to even need much of an introduction. Slugs attack a wide range of plants, causing anything from slight damage to death. Unfortunately, there is no foolproof method for eradicating slugs. All one can hope for is to reduce their numbers and protect plants when they're at a vulnerable stage. Toads, frogs, and beetles eat slugs and are worth encouraging in your garden. There are few fleshy plants that slugs don't eat. But if your slug problem is particularly bad, avoid their favourites, such as hostas and marigolds. One of the best ways of dealing with slugs is to use physical barriers. Place plastic bottle cloches around plants, or sprinkle circles of lime, eggshells, or sawdust around plants. Slugs are attracted to saucers or plastic pots of milk or beer (they drown themselves in ecstacy).

Nudibranchs, also known as sea slugs, are some of the most beautiful and diverse creatures in the ocean.
There are over 3000 described species worldwide.
External Morphology
Nudibranchs are essentially snails without shells, and their name literally means "naked gill". In most species, the gills are prominently displayed on their dorsal surface.
Some kinds of nudibranchs have a tuft of gills located on their backs at the posterior end, which are used only for respiration. Other kinds of nudibranchs have many finger-like structures on their backs called cerata, which function for gas exchange and often defense ( see Defense below
Sea slugs have a pair of tentacles (called rhinophores) located on top of their heads, which biologists believe are used as sensory organs to assist in finding food and seeking a mate.

Home Page I Viktor Schauberger I Copper I I Results Page I Plough I Order Form I Contact Us Castor trowel Phoenix hoe Polux hoe ... Taurus 3-claw It is widely known that slugs and snails are deterred by copper. We have noticed that plants cultivated with our tools are less susceptible to slug and snail damage, and many users of the tools have also reported this. Why does copper make a difference? We think it is all to do with electricity and magnetism. Here is our suggested explanation. We live in the Earth's magnetic field, which is sustained by the relatively high iron content in the Earth's crust. Iron is magnetic. Any piece of iron can have its own magnetic field. The metal copper, on the other hand, is non-magnetic and highly conductive. We, and all other mammals, have iron in our blood. That is why our blood is red. It enables each of us to have our own independent magnetic field, anchored on our blood. Slugs and snails do not have iron in their blood. Their blood contains haemocyanin, based on copper. This means that they do not have an independent magnetic field. As copper is conductive, they are highly sensitive to the Earth's field. As they move along the ground, they follow the lines of magnetic force. Now, imagine that a diligent gardener has carefully transplanted their lettuce seedlings, using an iron tool. As the tool turned the soil, it left its magnetic signature. When night falls, the slugs and snails start on their slimy way, following the lines of force that they detect on the soil surface. When they reach this disturbance around the transplanted lettuces, they are forced to stop. They do not know where to go - the signal is not clear. They have to wait, and while they wait, they get hungry. And there go the lettuces.

Slugs By Judy Sedbrook, Colorado Master Gardener SM , Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, Denver County Garden slugs are 1-1/2 to 2 inches long when full-grown and are gray to black in color. They are not insects but mollusks, like oysters and clams, and are often described as snails without shells. Slugs move along by secreting a path of mucus. Hatching from masses found in damp areas of the garden, slugs are one of the first pests of spring. They begin hatching when temperatures are consistently greater than 40 degrees F. Young slugs resemble the adults and begin feeding as soon as they have hatched, creating large holes in the leaves, fruit and crowns of plants. They prefer damp, cool locations and will hide in soil crevices, earthworm holes or under leaves, boards or other garden debris during the day. Wet weather in spring and early summer results in an increase in the slug population. If the weather is dry, they will die or burrow deep into the soil until conditions improve. Slugs feed at night, leaving a silvery trail behind them as they move; a sure sign of their presence. They can consume several times their own body weight each night, causing serious damage in a short time.

A. columbianus lives as far north as Sitka Alaska, west of the Cascade range in British Columbia, Washington and Oregon; into California as far south as the Salinas Valley. This is the only species that is sometimes spotted and has great colour variations. The Banana Slug was first given a scientific name in 1851 by Augustus Gould. Columbianus is named after the Columbia River district where this animal was first studied. Extensive research on these Ariolimax species was published by Albert Meade in 1943. Banana Slugs are the largest of all North American slugs. Most adult Ariolimax slugs are about 15 - 20 cm (six to eight inches) in length. They can reach a length of 25.4 cm (10 inces). They are the second largest slug in the world, the largest being the Limax cinereoniger of Europe, which can reach 30 cm (12 inches) in length. Banana Slugs eat living and decaying vegetation, roots, fruit, seeds, bulbs, lichen, algae, fungi, animal droppings and even carcasses. Mushrooms are their favourite food. Predators include snakes, foxes, porcupines, crows, ducks, shrews, moles, salamanders and even humans.

Snails and slugs prefer decaf
By Bill Davis Special to CNN (CNN) Morning coffee won't pick up a snail's pace. In fact, caffeine may be poisonous to slugs and snails a finding that may lead to the development of more environmentally friendly pesticides, researchers said Wednesday. A study in this week's issue of the journal Nature found that slugs and snails are killed when sprayed with a caffeine solution, and that spraying plants with this solution may prevent the slimy mollusks from eating them. Scientists in Hawaii came upon the results almost by accident. "We were looking for a solution for frogs," said Earl Campbell of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Honolulu. Campbell and colleagues were testing caffeine sprays to control coqui frogs, a problematic invasive species, when they noticed snails and slugs were also affected by caffeine. Researchers found that when they sprayed an area of soil with a 2 percent caffeine solution, slugs and snails would either crawl away from the treated ground or die.
