Slugs and Snails
Slugs and snails are one of the more common pests in the home garden. They slither around in the night, on cloudy days, and in early morning hours. They leave a shiny, slimy trail to mark their coming and goings. They like the same type of plants that are most common in your flower and vegetable gardens. They have been known to climb right into container gardens that are on the ground. Slugs and Snails even enjoy a variety of common shrubs. Seemingly impossible to completely rid your garden of these pests, they can at best be controlled. There are both chemical and organic means of controlling these pests. We recommend the latter, but recognize that chemical control is sometimes needed. Did you know?

All About Slugs The gastropod we gawk at, the mollusk behind the movement slug n. 1. Any of various small, snaillike, chiefly terrestrial gastropod mollusks of the genus Limax and related genera, having a slow-moving elongated body with no shell or only a flat rudimentary shell on or under the skin.
~~ The American Heritage Dictionary Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language adds:
"feeding on plants and a pest of leafy garden crops" Adopt a CyberSlug I've always been fascinated with slugs. Well, that's not entirely true. When I was two years old, my family was camping in the Coast Range, which we did all the time. I was playing on a log near the campsite when I started screaming bloody murder and scared the heck out of my mom, who thought I had encountered a bear (black bears were still common around there), when really I had spotted a large banana slug sliming its way along the decaying wood. That was the only time I ever feared slugs. Love of slugs is often considered odd. Frankly, though, slugs are fascinating. The most common slug around here and where I go camping is the banana slug. They are aptly named, long, olive green creatures. Some of them are more yellow or more green, and some sport varying amounts of black spots. They can grow to be very large. The CyberSlugs are based on this species. We have various garden slugs that live in Oregon as well. There are black ones, bright orange ones, speckly spotty ones and drab brown ones. I'm not an expert on the various species, though it interests me.

Soft succulent growth, including seedlings, young tender shoots, leaves and flowers are damaged or eaten, particularly in wet conditions. Underground parts of plants, especially potato tubers and tulip bulbs are tunnelled by black keeled slugs ( Milax spp.). Slime trails may be visible near the damaged tissues. See also Snails Cause
Slugs (various Arion, Milax and Deroceras species) can cause damage throughout the year but are particularly troublesome in the spring. Warmer weather combined with damp conditions greatly increases their activity. They vary in size and colour, which ranges from yellowish grey through shades of brown to black. Non-chemical control
A biological control specific to slugs, with no adverse effect on other types of animal, is available in the form of a microscopic nematode or eelwom watered into the soil. The nematodes ( Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita ) enter slugs' bodies and infect them with bacteria that cause a fatal disease. A moist soil and soil temperatures of 5-20

85. The Latest “Surefire” Methods Of Controlling Slugs
The Latest Surefire Methods of Controlling slugs. By Robert C. Olson. St. If there where a best way of controlling slugs there wouldn’t be so many ways.
http://www.perennialweb.com/pwarticles/pwslugs-a.html
The Latest "Surefire" Methods of Controlling Slugs By Robert C. Olson St. Louis Park, Minnesota DILETTANTE SYSTEMS: If there where a "best" way of controlling slugs there wouldn’t be so many ways. Over the years one has seen scads of articles written on this subject, many of them very imaginative. This summer I heard of more new schemes than ever before. Perhaps this is because I had significant problems with these unspeakable pests and was looking for alternatives to failed strategies. When my current system didn’t appear to be permanently eliminating the slugs I looked for a new method-and there where many to choose from. The New Wave: Reliable expert information was needed. I called the department of plant pathology at the renowned University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. They didn't have a clue as to whether it would be harmful to hostas or any other horticultural material, but it wouldn't lay a glove on alfalfa they said. The supreme guru of horticulture problems in Minnesota is Deb Brown, Director of the State Horticultural Society. The department of plant pathology, which by now was interested in this, had her call me to discuss it. She didn't know either, but encouraged me to try it on a few replaceable plants and let her know at the end of the season. Good advice. Most of the usual chemicals were only slightly effective in the big outbreak occurring at my place this year. The epidemic may have been as a result of adding huge amounts of compost to each plant in early spring-as any competetive gardener would do to get bigger and better plants than any one else. A warm wet May and being out of town, thus leaving the garden unprotected for a week or more at crucial times when the slugs are actively mating and laying eggs were additional factors.

Chemical Control
Biological Control Organic Control Slug/Snail Resistant Plants ... Links Chemical Control Alan Holmes suggested, "Lots of slug pellets! It's the only way." Jon Rouse gave up other methods of control and opted for blue pellets of death. He writes, "the effect has been dramatic. Some pots in which we thought things had long since died have suddenly sprung into life, surrounded by slug corpses. Even my gorse bush, the mate to which I threw out last year 'cos it seemed to be dead, now has new growth at its tips, and a surround of slug and snail bodies.
Incidentally, did anyone hear about the snail trail theory? Evidently something in the slime of older snails stops younger snails from maturing. If you kill the bigger snails, the trails disappear and younger snails mature to take the place of their late departed brethren." But Richard Roocroft Amanda Beck's solution, "Go out at night with a torch and some salt and watch them sizzle!!"

Boiled Sea-Slugs.
(Catching sea-slugs).
When a man wants to take sea-slugs, he first goes for a thin shaft which is used by the salmon fishers. He takes two thin cedar sticks, each one a short span long and a little thinner than the little finger, flat on one side and he takes cedar-bark and splits it in narrow strips. The two cedar-sticks are to be hooks at the end of the sea-slug spear. He puts these near the end of the harpoon-shaft, and ties them on with split long strips of cedar-bark. When it is finished, it is this way: [A simple illustration is omitted, of spear with hook lashed on end]. Then he waits for it to be calm at low tide. When it is calm, he launches his sea-slug-gathering canoe. He takes his sea-slug-gathering paddle, and his knife for cutting off the heads of sea slugs, and also the stick for catching sea-slugs. Then he paddles to a place where he knows there are many sea-slugs. He looks down into the water; and when he sees a place where there are many of them together, he takes his stick for catching sea-slugs and pushes it down into the water. He pushes the hook-end under the sea-slugs. Then it comes up lying crosswise over his canoe. He takes the sea-slug, takes his knife, and cuts off the neck. Then he squeezes out the insides, and he throws it down hard into his canoe, saying as he is throwing it down

Controlling Slugs and Snails in Your Garden

Ahhhhh! The joys of springtime abound... The new blossoms forming on your perennials, sunshine, longer days,........ slugs!
The slug... your adversary
Slugs may be a very serious problem to you if you live in the Northwest or other moisture laden areas of the country. A single lawn prawn can successfully remove an entire row of seedlings from your garden in no time at all. He can turn a perfect plant into swiss cheese over night and return to the safety of his hideaway, leaving you to wonder what happened...... As slugs wander about, doing their evil little slug deeds, they leave behind them a trail of slime which amounts to nothing less than a road sign for themselves and every other slug to follow to the grand feast. To make the situation even worse, slugs are hermaphrodites, they all have male and female reproductive systems. Yes, they can mate with themselves, and in the privacy of their own abode, each slug will produce two to three dozen eggs several times a year. The egg clusters look like little piles of whitish jelly BB sized balls. They will hatch in anywhere from 10 days to three weeks or longer, and these sluglingss can mature to adulthood in as little as six weeks. Destroy the eggs... wherever you find them.
Slugs may live for several years, getting larger with proportionately larger appetites each year. Now, do you

Caffeine: A lethal neurotoxin to garden pests
Scientists have stumbled on a secret weapon against snails and slugs. They have discovered the garden pests are poisoned by caffeine. A strong cup of coffee is enough to send the creatures into a writhing frenzy, followed soon by death. Scientists think caffeine acts as a potent neurotoxin against the pests. The finding may be of use to gardeners and commercial growers. Slugs and snails are notoriously difficult to deter from attacking plants. The chemicals currently used to control them are not permitted as residues on food crops. Caffeine - regarded as safer and more environmentally acceptable - could be very useful in pest control. Special brew The discovery was made by scientists at the US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service in Hawaii. They were testing a caffeine spray against frog pests when they noticed slugs were dying.

By Kristine Krug, in Salford
Garlic could be the new way to drive slugs away from our lettuce without using pesticides.
Slug protection costs £30m a year in the UK The smelly herb not only seems to keep vampires at bay, but scientists say it also drives slugs and snails out of the garden. Biologists from the University of Newcastle, UK, have found that a barrier of garlic oil repelled the molluscs. Dr Gordon Port, who heads the research project, described at the British Association's science festival in Salford, Greater Manchester, how exposure to refined garlic can even kill slugs. Garlic has been co-planted as an anti-pest control for hundreds of years. Mucus overproduction Dr Port's experiment now shows that an experimental refined garlic spray called Ecoguard can effectively deter slugs. It is not yet clear how garlic exerts its repulsive effect. But Dr Port described how prolonged exposure can kill the slugs: "They show an overproduction of mucus. They seem to dry up."

Snails and Slugs
Learn to control this challenging pest
by David George Gordon
No garden pest elicits a more visceral response than the lowly slug. And its cousin, the snail, equally capable of destruction of prized vegetables and flowers, is only partially redeemed by its reputation among gourmets. You'll never be able to eliminate all of the snails and slugs in your garden as proved by one English zoologist who removed 400 slugs from a quarter-acre garden each night for several years with no observable effect on the population. And as snails and slugs are basically small cogs in nature's big machine, there are many good reasons why you shouldn't even try. The challenge for most gardeners is to maintain a balance.
Sluggish Habits
The more familiar you are with slugs' and snails' patterns for raiding your garden, the more capable you will be of limiting damage to your plants. You're most likely to find garden snails and slugs during months with moderate but consistent rainfall and nighttime temperatures above 50F. And, with a few exceptions, they are most active at night. Go into your garden after dark or shortly before sunrise, armed with a flashlight or, better yet, a headlamp, which will leave both hands free. Look for large, irregularly shaped holes in the leaves of your plants and telltale
slime trails. Periodically conduct these informal surveys of slug populations and then try the most humane and least environmentally damaging control measures first.

http://drzeus.best.vwh.net/Slugs.html
How Slugs Copulate
"After crawling up an overhanging branch or wall, these hermaphroditic creatures circle each other for 30-90 minutes while exchanging mutaul caresses with their tentacles and secreting a great quantity of mucus which eventually forms into a twisted patch of glue-like consistency some two inches in diameter. The slugs then entwine themselves corkscrew fashion, detach themselves from their base and hang by a twisted cord of the thickened mucus 8-15 inches long. Still twisting in their embrace, they extrude from their heads their blue, club-shaped penis sacs which then extend into a fan shape at the tips. The two "penial masses" are then intertwined in a tight spiral, the upper coils expanding to form a kind of umbrella. When this is achieved, sperm transfer takes place and the slugs untwist themselves, crawl back up the mucus cord (which one of them eats), slide down the tree or wall and return to their everyday life in such damp environments as the undersides of fallen logs."
